3 Admiral Byrd: Forged on Ice Premieres Tuesday, April 21 at 9pm. Only on WOSU TV. Historical photos courtesy of Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at OSU Archival Program, Papers of Admiral Richard E. Byrd. From the team that developed the Emmy award-winning John Glenn: A Life of Service, WOSU Productions is proud to announce the broadcast premiere of its next documentary chronicling the life of a famous adventurer. In the last great period of global exploration, Admiral Richard Byrd challenged the forces of nature to advance the cause of science and aviation. He made history when he became the first person to fly over the North Pole in 1926, and followed it up with a death-defying, trans- Atlantic crossing one year later. In 1929, he made history again by becoming the first person to fly over the South Pole, and returned to the continent on a second expedition where he spent four harrowing months alone in the heart of Antarctica that almost claimed his life. Admiral Byrd: Forged on Ice is a one-hour documentary that follows this man s life from his childhood in Virginia to the most extreme environments on earth. It shows the legacy he built through sheer will, ambition and perseverance, while looking ahead at the 21st century explorers and climatologists who carry on in his name. Admiral Byrd: Forged on Ice premieres Tuesday, April 21 at 9pm. Only on WOSU TV. WOSU videographers and cast filming outdoors. WOSU Mentors Teach More Than Filmmaking It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a small army to make a movie. Check out the credits of a movie or the latest Columbus Neighborhoods documentary and you will see that it takes a large effort to entertain and educate an audience of any size. The logistics of teaching teamwork is something most young adults learn on the job, but at WOSU s medialab these life lessons are made available to year-old teens for free every weekend. Learning how to hold a camera, position a boom mic, and use editing software are only parts of the work that goes on in our medialab. Respect, patience, resilience, cooperation, failing and trying again is all part of learning to work as a team. WOSU s Ross medialab has three mentors who are students at Ohio State, working with teens to create art which in-turn generates a real excitement about learning. Their work on Saturday mornings is all part of the SURGE Columbus collaborative. WOSU Public Media is one of five participating institutions in Columbus supporting this initiative. WOSU s Ross medialab can accommodate eight to ten teens who are gaining insight into the power and purpose of media. To learn more, visit surgecolumbus.org. I want young people to know that the world is a much bigger place than the spot they are occupying at this time. That s why Pauline has decided to leave her PBS station a gift in her will. Please consider including WOSU Public Media in your will or future plans. by SHAWN LIKLEY, Co-chair SURGE Columbus Programming, TV Producer/Director Contact Amy Milbourne at

5 Finally, a Real Race for Columbus Mayor Columbus-ohio-city-hall. Licensed under Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons Columbus voters will do something this year they haven t done this century: they will elect a new mayor. And for the first time in 16 years, the 89.7 NPR News Team will get to cover a competitive mayor s race. Michael Coleman, first elected mayor in 1999 and easily re-elected three times, will not seek a fifth term. After weeks of speculation, four candidates took the step to put their names on the ballot. They face each other in a May 5th non-partisan primary to determine two finalists for the November election. City Council President Andrew Ginther is the favorite. He s a Democrat, a top-vote getter, has raised a lot of money and is Coleman s choice. He promises to continue Coleman s priorities. But Ginther faces challenges from two established Columbus politicians. Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott has made a name for himself since taking over from the late Jim Karnes in But Scott also has ruffled some feathers among his fellow Democrats. Terry Boyd served five years on the Columbus Board of Education, including three as president. Boyd provides Republicans with their best chance to recapture the mayor s office. Boyd criticizes Coleman and Ginther for paying too much attention to large corporations and downtown projects. Democrat James Ragland, a Catholic school administrator, is the long-shot candidate. The theme of Coleman and Ginther defines this race. Because of Ginther s close relationship with the mayor, this election will be a referendum on Coleman. The council president touts his work to boost the Columbus economy while maintaining city government s fiscal stability. His opponents point to Columbus comparably high income tax rate (6th highest in Ohio), and criticize Coleman and Ginther for not paying enough attention to struggling neighborhoods. Ginther and Boyd will face questions about their time on the Columbus School Board. Both served prominent roles during the time school administrators were tampering with student attendance data and grades. Zach Scott touts his executive experience in his bid for mayor, but his critics likely will point out his lack of experience outside the area of law enforcement. The bottom line Columbus voters have a choice between four worthy candidates, each making strong arguments they can do the job, and each facing questions they ll have to answer NPR News will provide listeners and digital users with central Ohio s most balanced and thoughtful coverage of the men who want to guide Columbus for the next four years. by MICHAEL THOMPSON, 89.7 NPR News Programming Director You re busy, you try to keep up. We know. Sure, you scan a few headlines on your computer, scroll Twitter on your smartphone. While you may know what s happening in the news during the day, you can t take the time to learn why it s happening. That s where 89.7 NPR News and All Things Considered come in. Each afternoon on your way home, NPR and WOSU provide the depth and context on the news you need to turn those headlines into dinner conversations. All Things Considered airs weekdays from 4 6pm and weekends from 5 6pm. 5
