2 VOLUME 34, NUMBER 11 WOSU Public Media: Delivering on OSU s Mission Why does Ohio State own a network of educational television and radio stations we now call WOSU Public Media? Part of the answer is in the 1870s OSU seal embedded with the Latin phrase Disciplina in civitatem, which translates to Education for Citizenship. As a land-grant university founded with an outreach mission, Ohio State strives to educate all Ohioans to provide a smarter citizenry. An early indicator of that mission was the Ohio Agricultural Extension. In 1906, OSU agents were sent via trains to rural Ohio traveling the state carrying agricultural exhibits and offering presentations on farm practices reaching thousands of farmers. So when OSU established one of the first radio stations in the country in 1922, it was modeling the Extension philosophy using the newest technology to disseminate WOSU MemberCard Benefit of the Month NOVEMBER S FEATURE: BalletMet Columbus Present your WOSU MemberCard during the month of November for this special offer! Valid for 2-for-1 admission for tickets purchased during the month of November for December performances of The Nutcraker. (614) information and entertainment. Programs in 1925 included the popular morning farm market reports; 174 lectures by OSU faculty; live musical programs; and play-by-play of OSU football games. Nine decades later, our priorities revolve around similar programming themes: news and public affairs, arts and culture, and lifelong learning. And the quality and importance of this nonprofit, noncommercial programming hasn t diminished a bit. Your support of that mission is more critical than ever. Our team is thankful Ohio State leadership understands and appreciates this history as we continue to reflect the core OSU tradition of Disciplina in civitatem. 3 Emmah Roepke sits and plays with her charges at St. Peter s Child Care Center in Mansfield. Classical 101 Delights Babies in Mansfield Day Care Center They bounce to Beethoven, gurgle to Gershwin and suck their toes to strains of Strauss. They re Classical 101 s tiniest listeners: babies who spend their days enjoying our great music on WOSV 91.7 FM in the Infant Room at St. Peter s Child Care Center in Mansfield. The babies have Infant Room attendant Emmah Roepke to thank for the musical ambience. A student in early childhood development at North Central State College and a self-described music fanatic, Roepke says her mother played classical music for her when she was a baby. Now Roepke is sharing her passion for music to the wee ones at St. Peter s. And they re all picking up on it. Fourteenmonth-old Abbigail, for instance, already has a penchant for piano music. I ve noticed that she seems to be more content in the room when there are piano pieces playing, instead of, like, a whole orchestra, Roepke said. It s just interesting seeing the babies respond to instrumental music, and that s what I like about it. I m a firm believer that classical music helps brain development at a young age. As much as Roepke s pint-sized charges like the music on Classical 101, they also respond to the voices of Classical 101 s hosts. When there are people talking on the radio, it s almost like they like to interact with them, Roepke said. Usually when the gentlemen are on, (the babies are) awake and playing, and when the men announce that s when they seem to look at the radio and wonder where that second voice is coming from. And yours truly? Roepke says the voice of Classical 101 s only female announcer helps the babies settle in for their midday naps. Jennifer Hambrick It s definitely a maternal voice, and I think that s something they pick up on even when they re sleeping and you re on the radio, Roepke said. Of course, the music works for nap time, too, when the great composers carry the babies along with the center s older children to the Land of Nod. As she works toward her degree, Roepke listens to classical music to help her study. And based on personal experience, she s betting that someday the little ones at St. Peter s will grow up to be big classical music lovers like her. If you play a certain kind of music when a child is younger, they could certainly grow up to be a fanatic of it, Roepke said. I think that s what happened to me. By Jennifer Hambrick, Classical 101 Midday Host Below: A little girl listens to Classical 101. Spotlight on Mansfield On a recent visit to Mansfield, I met with listeners and viewers who ve regularly supported us for decades. Their dedication to WOSU Public Media is gratifying and the impact the stations have had on their lives has inspired them recently to give more in their levels of support than ever before. Amy Milbourne Margaret Lindley retired from a long career as an educator in the Mansfield Public Schools and says she can t remember a day without WOSU in her life. Before retiring, Margaret listened daily to WOSU Classical music (91.7 FM, WOSV in Mansfield) and now enjoys relaxing with WOSU TV. Recently, Margaret made a gift to WOSU s Classical 101 campaign as a way to give back to one of her favorite organizations. We re deeply appreciative of Margaret s special support. Another wonderful supporter is Jan Wisner. Jan is also retired from the Mansfield Public Schools. A strong supporter and advocate of the arts, Jan especially enjoys arts and culture programming on WOSU TV. This year Jan became a WOSU Producers Club member, making her part of a special group of annual supporters who get early access to popular events, concerts and travel opportunities offered by WOSU. 5 Radio Highlights 89.7 NPR News & Classical 101 Highlights The All-Day NPR News Station The New Sound and Face of Public Radio Mike Thompson Classical Music All Day, Every Day The sound of public radio is changing and that sound was on full display last month when Radiolab came to Columbus and thrilled a Palace Theater audience with a live version of its eclectic science show. Hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich used audio clips, visuals, live music, explosions, and life-sized puppets to explain a new mindblowing theory on how dinosaurs became extinct. A giant T. rex and brontosaurus growled at the audience and nuzzled Krulwich as Abumrad weaved together science, music and sound effects. It s the formula that has made Radiolab one of the most popular programs on 89.7 NPR News and in public radio. In fact 89.7 s entire Saturday afternoon lineup showcases the new sound of public radio. Radiolab, This American Life, The Moth Radio Hour, the TED Radio Hour and The Dinner Party Download raise public radio s terrific storytelling to a new level. The programs mix in fresh (sometimes strange) voices with cool music and edgy writing to tell stories you cannot hear anywhere else. And these shows are bringing new ears to public radio. For the Radiolab Live performance, the Palace Theater was filled with 20- and 30-somethings, as well as babyboomers who love science and provocative content. It was a gathering of Columbus creative class thoughtful lifelong learners engaged in their communities eager to absorb and share something new. It s exactly the kind of community we re trying to grow at 89.7 NPR News and WOSU Public Media. Our programs not only tell you what you need to know, they entertain, engage and inspire you. We want you to listen and then share the public radio experience at the office, at the dinner table, on Twitter and Facebook. And, like with Radiolab Live, at the Palace Theater in downtown Columbus. Radiolab can be heard Saturdays at noon on 89.7 NPR News. By Michael Thompson, News and Public Affairs Director Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad prepare for Radiolab Live at the Palace Theater prior to the show. A New Season of ProMusica Broadcasts!
