Please send an to info@wosu.org or call In May, WOSU Public Media volunteer Robert (Bob) Yocom, was honored with the 2017 Distinguished Service Award from the National Friends of Public Broadcasting. This national recognition puts Bob in an elite class of volunteers. It s a well-deserved award and his nomination letter, drafted by the Membership Team s Alysia Gobert-Smith, is a testament to his invaluable service: Bob has been a dedicated volunteer with WOSU Public Media for over 30 years, having joined our team in Never one to complain, he has tackled each and every task with a can-do attitude and has always come through with reliable results. He has often taken on the tasks that many of us don't have time for or simply begrudge, and has performed them all with unwavering dedication and a smile. In fact, in 2013 Bob was awarded the Volunteer Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award having logged as many as 4,698 recorded hours for WOSU at that time. As time treads on and age defies our physical wishes, Bob has been forced to slow down a tad, but what he has lost in physical ability, he has long made up for in gracious attitude and perseverance. Ever the humble volunteer, Bob never asks for anything, never says no, and continues to give his all with a smile that enhances and brightens our day. Bob exemplifies the Public Broadcasting mindset and is a constant reminder of why what we do is important. Bob Yocom was born and raised in Ashtabula, Ohio, and attended Oberlin College, where he met his life-mate, Sally. He then went to Ohio State for his last two years, but was immediately notified to report to the Army. He eventually was sent to Georgia, where he was a supply sergeant for the Special Services Group. Bob came to Columbus on a permanent basis in 1955, after his army duties. He has always been a classical music fan, and remembers listening to WOSU back when $1.00 was the price of a yearly membership which included a monthly program guide, typewritten on a single page. He joined a group from the Columbus Computer Society to answer phones for a pledge drive in 1986, and returned on his own to volunteer as a pledge-taker and tabulator for years. When Membership asked him for help with tracking and packaging mail, he stepped into that job in He still works at WOSU one day every week. 10 reporting sheds light on root causes of community-wide health problems from chronic disease, to mental health and addiction, to infant mortality and on new efforts to solve them. The project will also examine topics including access to care, inequities, research and the business of health care. We're intent on telling stories from under-covered communities and hidden-away places Joins Health Care Reporting Project Always looking to collaborate with other public media organizations to bring important stories to our listeners, 89.7 NPR News has joined a unique heath care reporting project. WOSU-FM is one of six midwestern public radio stations taking part in Side Effects Public Media. Side Effects is a health news initiative exploring the impacts of place, policy and economics on America's health. The 89.7 Reporter Esther Honig is WOSU s representative for the project. She regularly contributes health care stories from central Ohio which air on stations around the region NPR News will air at least one Side Effects story each week and all of the reports are available on our website wosu.org. The project is funded in part by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Other Side Effects Public Media stations include WFYI in Indianapolis; KBIA is Columbia, Missouri; St. Louis Public Radio; Illinois Public Media in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois; and WNIN in Evansville, Indiana NPR News schedule 5am 6am 7am 8am 9am 10am 11am 12pm 1pm 2pm 3pm 4pm 5pm 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm + Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Morning Edition BBC NewsHour All Sides with Ann Fisher Fresh Air BBC World Service Columbus on the Record Marketplace Weekend Weekend Edition Wait Wait Don t Tell Me! 11 Join host Jennifer Hambrick for James Newton Howard s music from the M. Night Shyamalan film The Village Last Sounds of Summer Where did the summer go? You still have a few days to donate to Replay! Classical 101 s Instrument Drive for Columbus school music programs. We ll be accepting your new or used band and orchestra instruments through August 4 at our offices in the Fawcett Center at 2400 Olentangy River Road. Learn more at wosu.org/replay. If you believe in the power of music to change lives, this is the perfect way to have a positive impact on the next generation. You can spend August at the movies on The American Sound. All this month The American Sound is hosting a Summer Festival of American Film Music, highlighting some of the most beautiful and dramatic music ever composed for the silver screen. During the first week of August (5 & 8) join host Jennifer Hambrick for James Newton Howard s music from the M. Night Shyamalan film The Village, along with the playful Four Rags for Two Jons by John Novacek. August 12 & 15, John Williams achingly beautiful score for Schindler s List pairs up with Eric Whitacre s stunning choral work Cloudburst and Paul Schoenfield s whimsical From a Bintel Brief. Max Steiner s epic score for Gone with the Wind shares the spotlight August 19 & 22 with Dana Suesse s Concerto in Three Rhythms and Gershwin s Promenade (Walking the Dog). And right at back-toschool season, Bernstein s riveting music for the Marlon Brando classic On the Waterfront and a filling station Tango by Virgil Thomson. And speaking of American music, George Whitefield Chadwick was from the generation just before Charles Ives. Considered the most important American composer of symphonic music between the end of the Civil War and the First World War, Chadwick was one of the Boston Six that included Horatio Parker, Amy Beach, Edward MacDowell, and Arthur Foote. Heading toward The Labor Day holiday weekend, John Rittmeyer will have Chadwick s Symphony No. 2 from 1885 on 7.
