1 Newsletter # August 2011 Meetings are held at the Quality Bayside Inn and normally on the third Monday of the Month at 9:00 am. This month's meeting will be held on August 15th. Speaker s Corner There has been a change in the order of our next two speakers for August and September. Judy was to be our speaker on August 15, but she has been called in to the hospital for eye surgery on that date. As a result she will present her talk on river cruising on September 19. Our speakers on August 15 will be two members of the BC Securities Commission. Bob Abrams is the Manager of the BC Securities Criminal Investigation Team and was formerly a police Detective Senior Inspector. Marty Nicholls spent 26 years as a white-collar crime specialist and joined the Securities Commission in 2004 as Senior Investigator. Countless people in BC have lost their life savings through risky investments and fraudulent sales pitches. Bob and Marty will provide invaluable information related to protection against investment scams and how we can identify the accompanying red flags. I hope Probus members received some benefit from my talk on climate change on July 18. I did my best to present information and ideas not dealt with by previous speakers. I am concerned about the amount of misleading information found on the internet. It appears the propaganda machine reaches more people than the scientists because many people are not aware of the overwhelming evidence that tells us climate change is a serious threat. For those who wish to learn more about this complex subject I recommend making use of my reference sheet suggesting several quality websites and books. 2 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Many thanks to Ralph Bunker and his many assistants (see write up) for an excellent job on the annual barbecue. My cataract surgery has been scheduled for August 15 - the Probus meeting at which I was the scheduled speaker. Fortunately Gerry was able to switch with the September speakers. Andy will chair the meeting and I will give my travelogue on river Cruises of the World on September 19. I hope to see many of you at the annual Golf tournament Friday, August 26 - at Pheasant Glen. Please visit the following website if you want any information on the Probus Rendezvous in Vancouver September Information on activities, workshops and speakers can be found at John Gunton, our Program chair has found it necessary to resign as he finds it difficult to continue since he now lives in Victoria. Gerry Addy, his assistant will assume the position. Minutes - Jean Cotter President Judy Wood called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. 40 members and 2 guests were present. Financial Doug Cockburn reported a balance of $4, Speakers Gerry Addy reported that Judy Wood would be addressing the membership in August, her topic being River cruises around the world. Social Judy Wood reported 19 had participated in the trip to Whistler and 10 had visited the salmon farm. The salmon farm trip will go again September 6 for those interested. Membership David Sheppard was absent but Judy Wood noted our membership was about 113 Sunshine Alice Westaway reported that Iris Steele had passed away and a card was sent to Bob. Also a card was sent to the caterer for the BBQ, Hans, whose son was killed in an accident. Singles Club Alice Westaway reported a get together will be held at Nita Loejin`s residence on July 28 with dinner being salmon provided by Bob Urquhart. Judy Wood reminded everyone of Probus Rendevous in September. BBQ a thank you was given to Ralph Bunker and Gene Wakaruk for organizing the BBQ and bocci tournament. 43 signed up and 42 attended. The hat contest was won by Mac Forbes and Jeanne Bunker. There were 9 bocci teams, Judy Wood and Jean Temple being the winners. Golf Tony Marsland reminded everyone of the Golf tournament being held on August 26 at Pheasant Glen. Mac Forbes and Joan Warren acted as Greeters for the morning. Very sadly, his wife Iris has passed away. A sympathy card was sent to Harvey: Our caterer for many years for the Rotary Park annual BBQ. His 47 year old son, father of three children, was killed in an automobile accident. Robert Urquhart was visiting a friend in White Rock at the same place that our former member, Margaret Harris, now lives. She is doing well and wished to say hello to all her friends in the Probus Club. Alice Westaway CURRENT EVENTS GOLF TOURNAMENT - Friday, August 26-3pm, Pheasant Glen Golf Club Golf (9 holes with power cart) and dinner $45. Dinner only $20, Dinner is at 6pm. Tony Marsland SALMON FARM TRIP - Tuesday, Sept. 6-9am-3pm This free tour including a picnic lunch is offered to members on a first come first serve basis by Marine Harvest of Campbell River. 4 deadline. Members will meet at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre at 7:45am in order to car pool to Campbell River. Those intending to go need to be able to negotiate stairs and step over the edge of the boat. If you would be interested in this trip please contact Brenda Moore asap - besmoore@shaw.ca, Because of the limited numbers another activity has been planned for September. For more detailed information please read the July newsletter for the account of the June trip. COWICHAN BAY MARITIME CENTRE - Wednesday, September 21 We plan to visit Cowchan Bay first to see the quaint old town and to view the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre (admission by donation) and then have lunch. The Maritime Centre features the Wooden Boat Museum, which has many interesting models and many old nautical items. After lunch we are hoping to drive to the restored Kinsol Trestle, which passes over the Koksilah River, and which is to open to the public on July 28th. Some of the driving will be over rough roads and the walking will be challenging, but it will hopefully be worth the effort to see the $7 million refurbished trestle! More details later. CHEMAINUS THEATRE - Saturday, October 1 We plan to see the 2pm matinee performance of 'Amadeus'. This is the last date that we can use the Two for One coupon in the Island Living Book. Please bring your cheque and coupon to the August 16 meeting. The matinee ticket is $42.56 (for two if you have a coupon). Tony Antoniuk will be at the August 16 meeting to sell the Island Living books for $13. If you will not be at the meeting you can drop your cheque and coupon off to Judy Wood (1091 Eaglecrest Drive) by the Deadline of August 22. After this date members can try their luck with the theatre directly to arrange their own tickets. Brenda Moore & Judy Wood PAST EVENTS BBQ AND BOCCE TOURNAMENT Thursday, July 14 th Forty two people attended the annual barbecue at Rotary Park in Qualicum Beach July 14. Despite an initial downpour which had water flowing through the grounds to the ocean the weather cleared before most of the guests had arrived so that the bocce tournament could be held as scheduled. Emerging as winners from the 8 team competition were Judy Wood, Jean Temple and new members Don & Jan Walker. In conjunction with the bocce tourney was a hat contest (with hidden judges) and many original creations were worn by the participants. Winner among the ladies was Jeanne Bunker with her birds nest on top, while the male Page 4

5 winner was Mac Forbes. with his golf themed hat. We all enjoyed the always delicious barbecue of steak or chicken, salads, baked potato, corn and apple pie for desert. - as well as our two free drinks. Following dinner ten bottles of wine were drawn for as door prizes. Many thanks for a good job well done to the organizers- Ralph Bunker and assistant Gene Wakaruk, their wives Jeanne & Marlene, Alice Westaway, the bocce scorer and Doug Hamilton who helped with the measuring. Thanks to Jim Thompson & Alice Westaway for organizing, Bob Urquhart for providing all the salmon and mostly to Nita for hosting the group. Page 6

I met Ruth who was also on the school staff. We have been married for 58 years and have four children. We moved to North Vancouver where we both worked as teachers and school administrators.

I completed my education in West Van and received my postgraduate degrees (B.A., B.Ed.) at UBC. My teaching career began at the same elementary school I once attended as a pupil. I met Ruth who was also on the school staff. We have been married for 58 years and have four children. We moved to North Vancouver where we both worked as teachers and school administrators. I retired in 1985 and moved to Qualicum Beach in During my younger years I was an ardent table tennis player and participated in the Canadian National Championships several times. I have a fondness for classical music, sang in a church for over 30 years, and also served as choir director. I spent several years on the Eaglecrest Residents Association council and served as Director of the Emergency Preparedness program.
