While we are dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of Crown Firecoach apparatus, and many of our members do own Crowns, it is not a requirement for membership, and in fact almost every other

2 CROWN FIRECOACH ENTHUSIASTS - YOUR HOST CHAPTER Formed in 1989, the Crown Firecoach Enthusiasts became the Southern California Chapter of SPAAMFAA in On our 20th anniversary, we are proud to be your host for the 2009 Winter Conference. Our membership of over 250 includes individuals and organizations from all over the world. While we are dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of Crown Firecoach apparatus, and many of our members do own Crowns, it is not a requirement for membership, and in fact almost every other make of major fire apparatus is found in our chapter as well. It is important to note that the end of the Crown era is almost at hand. The last one was made in 1985 and there are very few that are still in front line service. Fortunately we have over 55 Crowns that are owned by club members and many of them will be on static display on Saturday. Our chapter-owned Crown/Snorkel will be featured on the souvenir dash plaques and T-shirts which will be available for purchase at the conference. If at any time during the conference you have a question or need help, just look for anyone wearing a CFE orange vest. We are all connected by 2-way radio so answers are only a call away. HOTEL INFORMATION The host hotel is the Sheraton Suites Fairplex in Pomona, California. It is located on the grounds of the Los Angeles County Fair which is the largest county fair in North America. All events except tours will be located at this site and are within walking distance. Fairplex has graciously donated the use of the lower administration parking lot for our displays which is right next to the hotel. Reservations may be made by calling Be sure to mention SPAAMFAA to get the discount convention room rate. Our convention registration desk will be located in the lobby of the hotel. The hotel has a shuttle service for pick-ups and returns to Ontario International Airport from 6:30am to 10:30pm. However, you must call the hotel at to make a reservation for this service. For more hotel information, go to HOST CITY INFORMATION The City of Pomona is located in the East San Gabriel Valley, 28 miles East of downtown Los Angeles. Average February temperatures are nighttime low of 44 and daytime high of 69. For more information, go to It hardly ever rains in Southern California, but if it does, all planned events will still take place, so bring a rain coat just in case. On the Fairplex grounds and next to our display area is the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Motorsports Museum which chronicles more than 50 years of American auto racing history. For more information, go to Also close by is the Mountain Meadows Golf Course, Montclair Plaza Mall, Ontario Mills Mall and Victoria Gardens Mall in Rancho Cucamonga. MEALS McKinley s Grill, located in the hotel, is a fine restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For those going on the tours on Thursday and Friday, lunch is included with all tours. We are also planning a shuttle service to local area restaurants on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Our shuttles will include a 1953 REO Squad, a 1956 Ford/Crown hose wagon, and the club s 1956 Crown Fire Crew Bus. And back by popular demand, on Friday night, is our authentic Fire Camp Dinner, prepared on-site by a California Department of Forestry (CALFIRE) mobile field kitchen (assuming no major fires). Then on Saturday night will be the banquet, on the Fairgrounds, in the Avalon Restaurant which will be opened for our use only. It is within walking distance but we will have our shuttles running to this venue as well. TOURS On Thursday and Friday, we have some exciting tours planned to area fire departments, museums and other places of interest around Southern California. On both days, there is a choice of two different bus tour destinations, with three stops on each tour. All tours depart at 8am from in front of the hotel. Lunch is included with each tour. Thursday Tour A will stop first in the Los Angeles County suburb of El Monte to visit Leader Emergency Vehicles. Leader began manufacturing ambulances 30 years ago, with a focus on quality and durability. The company specializes in Type II ambulances, wheelchair cars and executive coach transportation. They also manufacture modular Type I and Type III ambulances. Leader is also the California distributor for Horton Emergency Vehicles and American Emergency Vehicles. From Leader, the tour moves on to the L. A. Harbor and LA City Fire Station 112 in San Pedro, home of LAFD Fireboat 2, the "Warner J. Lawrence." This is the most powerful fireboat in the world. Next door is the old Fireboat

From San Pedro the tour will cross over the famous Vincent Thomas Bridge to the port city of Long Beach to visit the Long Beach Fire Department Museum where we will have lunch. The Museum is a historic former fire station built in 1925 which consisted of the station in front and a city repair shop in the rear. The collection includes hand-drawn, horse-drawn and motorized apparatus built by Ahrens-Fox, Mack and Seagrave, among others. It is also home to a large helmet and badge collection donated by SPAAMFAA Southern California Chapter charter member, Ray Chambers. Thursday Tour B offers something very different - a tour of some of the newest, largest and most well-equipped fire stations in California. As recently as the last decade, the Indian Resevations that dot inland Southern California made due with hand-me-down pumpers operating out of metal sheds. Today, these reservations are the home of large Casino-Resorts and thanks to the proceeds of Indian Gaming, the Tribal Governments now operate large, state-of-the-art fire stations with the latest in apparatus. Some of them even provide paramedic services for their neighboring rural fire districts as well as mutual aid response. If you want to see fire stations with the latest technology and rigs of the kind that the manufactures put on display at Firehouse World, don't miss this tour! Stops will include the Pechanga Indian Reservation F.D. in the Temecula wine country of southwest Riverside County, the Pala Indian Reservation F.D. in the hills of northern San Diego County where the tour will have lunch, and the Rincon Indian Reservation F.D. in Valley Center, in inland San Diego County. Friday Tour C heads to to Hollywood to visit the Los Angeles Fire Department Museum at old Fire Station 27. Housed in what was once the largest fire station west of the Mississippi, the museum's collection of unique and historic apparatus dates from the 1880s. The Fallen Firefighters Memorial in front of the station includes five life-size statues of firefighters. Moving to the San Fernando Valley the tour will stop at L.A. City F.D. Sta.114 at the Van Nuys Airport. This is where the LAFD Air Operations are based. See the LAFD helicopter fleet that fights the southern California wildfires and hear from some of the pilots that fly the most dangerous missions in civilian aviation. Also in the Valley, the tour will visit the famous Nethercutt Collection. This auto museum is a collection of antique luxury automobiles from the estates of film and fashion notables of the past century - including a few fire rigs. (Note: The museum does not allow any flash photography, and also does not permit casual attire such as jeans or shorts - button shirts and long slacks should be worn for this tour). Friday Tour D will go to the San Bernardino County Regional Emergency Training Center & USFS Air Tanker Base in San Bernardino. Located at the San Bernardino Regional Airport (the former Norton Air Force Base), it is one of the few facilities in the nation that does live-fire ARFF training. Here fire crews will put on a rescue demonstration and explain the center's training programs. We will also visit the San Bernardino County F.D. Maintenance & Service Center located at the same airport. San Bernardino County F.D. serves the largest county in the United States, which starts near our convention hotel and goes to the Arizona border. The tour will head across town to the CALFIRE/Calif. Dept. of Forestry (CDF) Museum which is located at CALFIRE San Bernardino headquarters. Here we will have lunch. The museum documents the early history of the CDF. SEMINARS AND SPECIAL EVENTS In addition to the tours during the day, on Thursday and Friday we will have evening seminars. Topics include Antique Apparatus Restoration, Sirens (presented by Kevin O Connell, President of B&M Siren), California Wildfires (presented by CAL FIRE/ Riverside Ranger Unit Chief John Hawkins) and Rotor Wing Aerial Firefighting (presented by Ericson Air Crane).We also have several special events planned for the Conference site. Friday is Wildland Night, with a wildland fire apparatus display from such agencies as the LA County FD, CALFIRE, and USFS. The display will be in conjunction with an authentic Fire Camp Dinner, prepared by a CDF mobile kitchen, just like at real wildland fires. Saturday morning the Firematic Flea Market begins at 8am, next to the hotel in the parking lot. Move-in for the Apparatus Display also begins at 8am. At 1pm, we will have a working steamer pumping demonstration. Saturday concludes with the annual awards banquet. STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
