When you are having fun time passes too quickly. July was a busy fun filled month; Fourth of July Picnic, Progressive Dinner, Lawn Breakfast and Raystown Lake weekend. The weekend was hot, but a fantastic ride thanks to John and Wayne Ferland. The lake cruise on the Proud Mary was very relaxing and some were so relaxed that they caught a few Z s. The stop at the 911 Memorial brought back memory of the great sacrifice the passengers chose to give in order to save lives. On the ride home a stop at the Round Barn was a special treat as they were hosting the 9 th Annual Corn Festival. On August 7 th, we shared dinner and ice cream with visitors from North Carolina Chapter L. We had dinner at Brickerville House but their ice cream shop was closed so we headed to the Pretzel Hut for dessert. A good time was had by all and we enjoyed the visit with four members of NC Chapter L. August has proven to be just as busy. The dinner ride on the 11 th to the Nauti Goose gave us another enjoyable ride to North East MD. Thanks once again to Wayne Ferland and Duayne Keen for another beautiful ride. Sunday August 12 th brought a perfect day. The temperature was a made to order riding day. The Wounded Warriors Benefit at Lapp s Restaurant for the first time was a huge success. Some 46 entries were made for the Poker Run and 53 cars entered the judging. The high hand was won by Kim Thomson, from Glenmore PA and the low hand was won by Paul Sobolewski from Myerstown. This was our first car cruise and we will definitely do it again next year. Cars started showing up at 9:30, beautiful street rods; classic and antique cars lined the parking lot and spilled out into the street. Jeff Hughes was the Best of Show trophy winner driving his pristine Camaro. Our judges, Larry Greathouse and Joel Hertzog of Custom Classics stated this was a perfectly restored vehicle, thank-you for your help. The trikes took top honors in the motorcycle show. Best of show going to David Brown. His brilliant orange tiger trike is for sale if anyone is interested. Gerry and Bonnie Kerkeslager s blue military trike and Bill and Marcia Focht s orange trike received first and second runner-ups respectively. Our motorcycle judges were Bob and Natalie Gomez along with Carl Faix, thank-you for your help. All together we had 93+ bikes, trikes and cars. Again, our very special thanks go to Gary at Don Lefever s Garage in Quarryville for donating both the car and motorcycle trophies. Lancaster Honda, the Christian Motorcycle Association and four vendors honored us with their presence. Our DJ, Mike Pizulli, did a fabulous job keeping the music flowing. The Red Rose Honor Guard presented our Nation s Colors, then performed and explained the flag folding ceremony. A special thank-you to this group for their impressive demonstration. Thank-you seems so small to express our appreciation to all of the many volunteers and willing workers that proved once again what a fabulous chapter we have. A special thank-you to Duayne Keen for taking over the Poker Run. Great Job, Duayne thanks! We have set the date for next year August 11 th so keep it in mind. Looking forward to September -- The GWRRA District Convention will be held in Gettysburg September 6, 7 and 8. Chapter B s holiday theme is Arbor Day. If you have not registered yet, consider at least a day pass. We look forward to seeing all of you there. The Solanco Parade is scheduled for September 19 th ; Chapter B is scheduled in the parade. Final instructions as to lineup will be given to us a few days prior. This is an amazing home town fair giving us an excellent opportunity to increase the public s awareness of GWRRA Chapter B. A number of chapters are celebrating anniversaries. Chapter K will celebrate their 25 th on September 15 th, let us know if you would like to attend. Of course, Chapter B will be celebrating our 30 th anniversary on October 13 th. The deadline for registration is fast approaching, September 30 th. The flyer and general information is included in this newsletter. Please check it out and register. Because it is a catered event at Enck s Banquet Hall, located on Route 72 (Manheim Pike), pre-registration is a must. Mail your reservations to Connie Breneman. Other events in September include: September 2 nd, First Sunday at the American Legion in Ephrata; September 8 th, Chapter B Dinner Ride; September 16 th, Philadelphia Ride for Kids; September 23 rd, PA Chapter V Annual Picnic; September 23 rd, Baltimore Ride for Kids; September 27 th to the 30 th, the PA Triangle Ride, Wayne Ferland is the contact and there will be a sign up sheet at the gathering; September 29 th, Ride for Hope, Joni and Friends, leaving from Lapp s Family Restaurant in Quarryville. Also an annual trip to the Biglerville Apple Festival is in order on October 6 th or 7 th. Nice riding weather will be over soon so take advantage of these events and enjoy the cooler weather. Remember we are here to serve Chapter B so our ears are always open. Got a question or comment we are listening. See you at ice cream! Hugs to all, John and Jeanne

FROM THE CHAPTER RIDER EDUCATORS CHIP AND JUDY GOODNO Hope all Chapter B members are finding time to ride this summer. And that everyone is riding safe! August s education program started on a strong note in Don & Mary Engle s basement on the first Saturday of the month. District Educator Doug Motter led his first course in Parking Lot Practice. The objective of this training was to certify new PLP facilitators. Prior to this training, there were only a handful of PLP Facilitators in the entire district. Those participating from Chapter B included Rob Simmons, Jerry Kerkeslager, Don Engle and Chip Goodno. The purpose of PLP is to help chapter members in safe and structured practice to improve riding skills through work on a series of maneuvers that build confidence and reinforce basic riding abilities. It is not a beginning rider course, but rather designed to prepare riders for the more advanced courses including BRC2 (Experienced Rider Course) and ARC (Advanced Rider Course). All attending were approved as PLP Facilitators, both for motorcycle and trike/sidecar practice. Back to Don s basement, we spent several hours learning the role of facilitators, rules to be followed, setting up the range and how to help attendees at PLP s without offering instruction, suggestions or riding tips. Once the classroom portion was done, and we had the appropriate breaks for snacks and socializing, we headed to the church parking lot behind Don s house. It s a great place to hold a PLP, which we knew since we tried an unofficial practice during Garage Day this past spring. Thanks very much to Don and the church for arranging this and allowing us to use their facility. We wouldn t have been able to accomplish much without our riders, Larry Greathouse and Jim Duff, who came over to help facilitators practice by signing up for their first formal PLP. Thanks so much to both Larry and Jim. Doug walked us through the registration of attendees, paperwork needed to hold a formal event. Then, with Doug observing, the four trainees set up the range for the first exercise with Don on his Wing demonstrating the exercise. The others described what was to be done to the attendees, Larry and Jim. We repeated the process through all six difference range drills, and Larry and Jim received their card for attending their first formal PLP. Once done, Doug announced that all four chapter members in the training, plus one additional person from another chapter, were designated as PLP Facilitators. We were told that in order the retain the certification, we will need to hold at least 2 PLP sessions over a two year period at which time we will need to renew our certification. We are already talking about planning a PLP session in the fall. So get ready and we hope our chapter riders will come out and help! Congratulations to our new Parking Lot Practice Facilitators! And remember All the Gear, All the Time (ATGATT)! Ride Safe. Chip & Judy Chip & Judy Goodno Chapter Educators PA Chapter B

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT DIVISION (M.E.D.) Don Engle Thank You! I am receiving plenty of photos and information you can stop now! Just kidding!! I am receiving all kinds of photos and information and want to say Thank You. I have been sharing this with Becky D. for her scrapbook too. I trust my presentation at our Anniversary Celebration party will be as rewarding for you as it has been for me in learning about the history of our chapter. In case you haven t noticed, our chapter is growing! We have had several people come to our past events and/or Gathering and as a result, some have, or are in the process of, joining GWRRA. At Bike Fest, I talked with 5 other couples who took information about GWRRA and PA-B and hope to see them at one of our rides, events, or Gathering. Please take time to meet and greet them and make them feel as if they have been with us for as long as you have. MOTORIST AWARENESS DIVISION (M.A.D.) If you attended our Bike Fest on August 12 at CR Lapps, you may have noticed the two flyers that I posted on my bike windshield. One talks about my bike and the other starts with, Hey You! The initial reaction I get is that people think I m selling my motorcycle. (Mary told them, Sure, for the right price. But don t tell my husband. ) Anyway, I found these little flyers to be a great way to start up a conversation while at the same time, educating them to two things: my Bike and Safety. Now, I can t take credit for the idea, which actually came from PA-V s motorcycle show that I attended a couple of years ago. From that sprung an idea on how to get people comfortable with a motorcyclist. Whenever my bike is going to be parked for a while out in public, I have begun to pull the flyers out of the trunk and put them up on the windshield. People, being curious, slowly walk towards the bike with hands clasped behind their back, head slightly forward, and begin to read. Even if I m not around, the flyers will do the trick of educating people about me, my bike, and how they can keep us motorcyclists safe. I will have my flyers posted on our Chapter B website under Knowledge for you to look at. If you want me to make you one, just let me know. Just be sure to remove them from the windshield before you ride! CHAPTER WEB MASTER Don Engle Check out our Chapter website at: for: Calendar of Events and Event Flyers. Do you have a photo of a trip you took, or an event you attended, maybe you have something For Sale? Want to post it on our website? Please your jpg file to: dfengle@dejazzd.com

Hello Fellow Goldwingers! Another few more weeks remain for Tuesday evening Ice Cream Social night. If you haven't come out for a night of riding (weather permitting), meeting old and new friends and of course ice cream please join us soon. We meet every Tuesday around 6:00pm until about 7:30pm. In the past few weeks, we've had a great turnout and even some visitors from out of state Chapters! Here's some hot-of-the-press news ice cream facts and trivia. Have you had a peanut butter cone recently? Ice cream trends: Restaurants go beyond vanilla A longtime dessert favorite, ice cream continues to gain popularity among U.S. consumers, pushing frozen treat restaurant operators to think outside the box with more innovative and unusual flavors. In the year ending April 2012, nearly two billion servings of ice cream were ordered at U.S. foodservice outlets, a figure that was up 2 percent from the same period the year prior, according to The NPD Group s CREST research. And while an International Dairy Foods Association survey found that tried-and-true vanilla still remains the most popular flavor among consumers, it's no surprise that nontraditional varieties are piquing the interest, and taste buds, of consumers nationwide. Among restaurants in the frozen treats category which includes ice cream, yogurt, gelato and Italian ice unique flavors are a clear trend. After examining a database of more than 4,800 chain and independent restaurants, Mann found nontraditional flavors such as mango, green tea and key lime pie were showing up on more restaurant menus in 2012 than they were the year prior. Peanut butter topped that list of flavors, which included but is not limited to lemon, peach, pumpkin and watermelon. Usually the summertime is a great time to showcase [nontraditional flavors], said Ray Karam, senior tastemaster at Cold Stone Creamery. The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based chain, which has 1,086 U.S. locations according to NRN s latest Second 100 report, currently offers such unusual flavors as mojito and key lime pie, both on Data Essentials list of growing flavors. Karam says they serve as a great way to generate excitement among the brand s customers. Not only are they good flavors, but they are attention grabbers, drive trial and customers can talk about them and share information with their friends, he said. Foodies and experimenters, especially among the younger crowd, want the wow factor and can t wait to try the newest sensation. Donna Smith, vice president of marketing for Franklin, Tenn.-based Tasti D-Lite, whose more than 100 flavors currently include trending varieties such as crème brulee', key lime and cotton candy, also says that unique flavors are a good way to target specific areas or demographics. Key lime traditionally sells well in Florida and similar states, Smith said. In addition, stores that are located close to schools or have a larger representation of children in the area tend to do well with the more kid-friendly flavors like bubble gum and cotton candy. But beyond marketing, ice cream is a big business generating $10 billion in revenue in the U.S. in Together We Ride, Jeff & Carol Dale Ice Cream Coordinators

A Note from your Couple of the Year Bill and Marcia Focht It's hard to believe that our summer is almost over. After planning and canceling many motorcycle trips, we think we are finally going to get to go to West Virginia/Virginia/North Carolina the week of August 19th with Kenny & Pat Messner. Yes, Marcia actually had the suitcases all packed (and then unpacked) three different times due to our summer of heat and humidity. Hopefully, the week of August 19th will be a pleasant one weather wise and we can finally pack and actually get away for a week. By the time you read this article we hopefully will have returned from a wonderful get away. Despite the weather it has been a busy summer. Sharing Tuesday Ice Cream nights has been lots of fun with some new places and new faces, too! We've enjoyed meeting some new members and reconnecting with friends we formerly rode with in another group, Jeff & Sue Wenrich. They have been able to attend a few of our Ice Cream evenings with us. We look forward to seeing them and other new members in the months ahead. We were able to join the ride to Heirloom Weavers, Red Lion, following the Gathering on June 28th. Very interesting place to visit. We were unable to ride for a few weeks after Bill had surgery to release a trigger finger on his left hand which I'm told is the hand you use to operate the clutch. Guess this is pretty important, huh?? We were able to join Jim Duff, ride leader along with John Parker, Larry & Ruth Ann Greathouse, Terry & Mary Heil on what was to be a Chapter B ride showing two couples who were visiting from Chapter L, North Carolina some of the Lancaster County area. The only problem was that the women (Karen & Sonja) had made other plans regarding their trip to Lancaster and planned to shop that day. Sooo, that meant the men, Darrell & John had to shop since they had the trailers to haul all the goodies back home. Therefore, we had our tour of Lancaster County without our visitors, but we did meet up with them later for the usual Tuesday night Ice Cream at Brickerville House along with many other Chapter B members. We then ended up at the Pretzel Hut in Newmanstown, rt. 501 North of Lititz since the Ice Cream stand at Brickerville was closed. All in all, it was a nice ride on a nice day with nice people. What more could you ask for??? On Saturday, August 11th, we rode with 9 other couples to the Nauti Goose in North East, Maryland for a lunch ride. It was a beautiful ride led by Wayne & Kim Ferland with the return ride led by Duayne & Shirley Keen. Also attending were Jim & Becky Duff, John & Jeanne Parker, Ron & Sandy Spence, Ken & Pat Messner, Barry & Denise Ness, Rob & Pat Simmons and John & Kathy Bell. A short stop was made on the way at Maplehofe Dairy in Quarryville for those who needed their ice cream fix. All in all, it was a great day spent with great people. Sunday, August 12th we attended our third annual Bike Fest at Lapp's Restaurant in Quarryville. Most of you know, since it was very well attended, that we finally had a beautiful day and a fantastic turnout with both motorcycles and classic cars/street rods. We shared a table with a new couple, Bill & Donna Bard from Willow Street. We enjoyed meeting them and getting to know them a little over dinner. Hope to see them at future events. On a Regional note, we understand that Barry & Rhonda Blyler from Chapter V, Hanover, who are currently District Couple of the Year participated in the selection process for Regional Couple of the Year held in Rutland, VT. We have been told that even though they did not "bring home the gold" so to speak, they represented their chapter and the district very well and many of their friends from Chapter V were there to support both Barry & Rhonda. We only recently met both Barry & Rhonda a few months ago at Chapter K's breakfast gathering in Carlisle and found out that Barry's father and Bill only lived about two blocks from each other back home in Hollidaysburg, Pa. He & Bill used to hang out together in the "old days"!!!!! It is a small world when you think about it. As Bill's mother always told us "be good...when you travel you never know who you might see that knows you". Of course those of you that have learned to know Bill, there's no doubt that you know he would be good!!!!!! Right!!!! We do want to congratulate Tim & Eileen Guile as the new Region B Couple of the Year! Well, til next time, enjoy the rest of your summer and ride safe. Remember, it is not always the destination but the journey that makes the ride enjoyable. Bill & Marcia 2012 Couple of the Year
