A BRIEF HISTORY OF SPRING FLING FROM PAT AND ROB May 13 th is our annual Spring Fling. Every year for many years Chapter B has gotten together in the spring for food and socializing. Over the years since Pat and I have been attending Spring Fling we have seen numerous changes. Our first Spring Fling that we attended (2007) was in an open pavilion in a Lititz area park. John and Bonnie McClun were the Chapter Directors. Sadly many of the attendees of that 2007 Spring Fling are no longer active chapter members. As I recall there were twenty or twenty five of us trying to keep warm on a cold wet day. No rides, no games, just visiting and eating pot luck for a few hours. In those days our Spring Flings were just for Chapter B members. Larry and Ruth Ann Greathouse suceeded the McCluns as Chapter Directors and moved the Spring Fling to the East Petersburg Park. The East Petersburg Park has an enclosed pavilion which was great. With the move we started organized rides and games. With the start of organized rides (lead and self-guided) and our terrific food we started attracting GWRRA members from other chapters. Our attendance was also boosted by the fact that other area chapters were not as active as they are today and their members were looking for activities. We soon out grew the East Petersburg Park and it was time to move on. With space being a problem John and Jeannie Parker (with some help from Ralph Goodno) moved the party to our current location, pavilion 22 in the Lancaster Park. The new location is wonderful, it is enclosed, has a nice kitchen, lots of parking and beautiful scenery. This year, like the past few years, we have planned a guided ride/ poker run, door prizes, a flea market table and lots of home made food. We expect numerous visitors from other chapters including Chapters A, E, K, H and MD-H. Pat and I are looking forward to our 11 th Spring Fling and hope to see you there. So come join us for fun, food and rides. Rob and Pat
FROM JIM DUFF-RIDE COORDINATOR MILLERSBURG FERRY RIDE SATURDAY MAY 27, 2017 Come join me as we cross the Susquehanna River at Millersburg, PA on the 200th anniversary year of operation of the Millersburg Ferry. The ride will start from the Mount Joy Sheetz #312. This Sheetz is located just off 283. From Lancaster take the Mount Joy PA 230 exit at milepost 22. From Harrisburg take the Esbenshade Rd exit at milepost 21. Or you can use the address of 1555 E. Main St, Mount Joy, PA and take whatever route you or your GPS choose. Kickstands up at 9:00am. We will take a leisurely ride through Annville, over the mountain on Goldmine Road to Tower City and across route 209 to Millersburg. There will be a short stop at McDonalds around 10:30 and we should be at the Ferry around 11:15. On the west side of the river we will get some lunch. After lunch we will ride around the country roads crossing back over the Susquehanna north of Harrisburg on I81. I will be riding down 441 to Columbia. As always, you can stay with me or head to your home anywhere along the route. The 2016 Ferry rates were $7 for motorcycle and rider and an additional $3 for a passenger. Please sign up on the website. Hope to see you on the ride!!! Ride Safe, Jim Duff
MEMORIAL WEEKEND RIDE For the past six years or so a group of Chapter B members has been going down to Greenbank, West Virginia to ride the twisters and see the sights. We will again be going down leaving Friday morning May 26th and returning Sunday. We will be camping with the nice folks hosting the annual BMW rally. Registration is upon arrival. Cost is $56 per person and includes all your camping fees and two dinners. There are two bathrooms with hot showers and electrical hookups. Local rides include Seneca Rocks, Boyer Nature Preserve, Cass Railroad, the National Radio Telescope Observatory, Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Seneca Caverns, Lost World Caverns and miles and miles of twisters. For more information contact: Craig Lenhard or Larry Greathouse National Radio Telescope
WINGS SAIL TO CARIBBEAN-PART TWO By Sandi Lenhard Waiting for a little gasoline before the day s ride begins! As the cycles were not allowed to have more than one-quarter tank of gas on the cruise ship upon the start of the cruise, we needed gas for each day s trip. So as soon as we reached a pre-arranged gas stop, all of us lined up, and the ETA staff put gas in the tank. (Each cycle rider had to pay cash the day before the cruise. This provided ETA money for gas, fees, escorts, etc.) We had to stay with the group, but that was not a problem. We visited places for shopping, time on the beach, potty breaks, etc. Keeping up with the group was not like riding in Lancaster County! Because we had numerous populated areas, the riders had to keep the gaps short so that cars would not push into our lineup. Without CB s, it was very important to keep together! NOTE: the temps in the Caribbean was about 80 degrees in March. It was great for riding! What?! Our group of 14 Gold Wings attracted lot of attention not only onboard but also from those who happened to see us out & about! Those on the ship were confounded and full of How? and Where about the presence of motorcycles on the ship. Those along our route on each island were pleasantly delighted to see our motorcade and either smiled & waved or aimed their phones or cameras to save the moment for posterity and probably some social media! Song Fest Wherever he goes, Craig Lenhard usually manages to bring a guitar along. He scoured the ship for a place that our little group could gather in a private area as the public spaces were allotted to the guests and scheduled (paid) performers. He discovered a little, unused room with the prerequisite needs and decided that it would be perfect then came along a big spider. (Sorry, wrong ending!) Just at the time, a crew member stumbled on our plot. He kindly arranged for us to legally hold the private song fest and even stopped by during the fun. Chaper B friends kindly provided our troubadour with some liquid refreshment, which they proceeded to bring in while he was singing and place near his feet! (Thanks, Jim Burr and Jim Duff )
At the last beach on the trip, a few of the ladies decided to go for broke and got in the water. The temp was perfect even if the attire was not! Beautiful Island View Chapter B Cruisers View from our visit to the ship s bridge. How The Bikes Ride The Seas Our Whole Cruise Group

DISTRICT NEWS By Rick and Andi Riek PA District Directors Well hello Goldwingers everywhere, Don't look now but I believe old man winter may have finally released his icy grip on us. Those of us that have lived around this area are used to this kind of weather but we all know how fast this sunny, warm beautiful weather can disappear and frost is wiping out the blossoms on the lilac and rhododendrons. Let s hope he and Mother Nature is kind to us and she continues the warm, sunny weather. Try to remember that April showers bring May flowers, not April snow showers bring angry Goldwingers. May is motorcycle awareness month and we all know that angry motorcyclists should not take the bike out of the garage. Our training reminds us that before you get on your motorcycle you must be in a good frame of mind. With sunny days and warm temperatures ahead of us, we can mount our machines and enjoy the sport we all love so much. Also, motorist in cars and trucks are not used to motorcycles on the roads. Andi and I have been busy with the district team in getting ready for the district meeting and was still able squeezed in a camping trip with some of our Goldwing friends. We are now planning on visiting Chapter N for their anniversary celebration. I m sure this will be an enjoyable time. We are working on finalizing plans for the PA Rally coming in May. Lots of positive things are happening and we are looking forward to getting schedule of events out to you shortly. Mark your calendar, book your room, and get your registrations to us as things are filling up. We will be able to accommodate everyone who wishes to participate in the rally. The old adage "you snooze you lose" will soon be taking affect. And speaking of registrations, have you registered for All Chapters East and All Chapters West yet? Better get busy because the way time flies the deadline for registration will be here before you know it. What a wonderful time it is camping with your GWRRA family. Chapter C and Chapter W are putting in a lot of work hosting you at their events. There are flyers on the district website with all the information you need to register. Each chapter is planning on having a lot of fun at their events. Now is the time to start thinking about All Chapters East and All Chapters West. Camping spots are going fast, so again the ole adage, if you snooze you lose comes into effect. Looking at the Roll for the Dough standings, there are a few chapters that are moving along. Don t forget the District will pay their charter fees for We are hoping for every chapter to get involved in this program. By visiting other chapter gatherings and events you can learn how other chapters run gatherings and unique events.
Every day we get a flyer or ride schedule from our chapters. It is looking like a busy riding season this upcoming year. We encourage our chapters to post their events on the district website to keep everyone posted on what you have planned for your chapter. Just drop Mike Ammerman an and he will post it on our site for everyone's enjoyment. Andi and I have been busy since we took over as District Directors of Pennsylvania working. And it looks like we will be putting on a lot of miles again this year. This being our final year as District Directors we are doing everything possible to visit all our chapters. We will be conducting another fundraiser for our district and chapters. The district has already applied for and received a small games of chance license. The district team has worked hard to put this together. We will be getting information out on our fundraiser very soon. Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors groundshark@atlanticbb.net (814) Home (814) Cell Go for it now. The future is promised to no one. ******************************************************************** Newsletter printed courtesy of
