1 G O L D W I N G R O A D R I D E R S F 2019 Chapter PA Q Web Site Chapter Director: Hi to everyone, so glad to hear that you had some relief from the cold, and I hope the Groundhog is right and Spring will be here soon. Hopefully you will be able to get out for a Valentine s get together. Good Luck on the Raffle Tickets. I see there are winners posted already. If you have a request for a ride or event, be sure to let Mike or Pat Cole know so we can get them scheduled. Rita Gillespie CD Inside this issue: Chapter Director 1 ACD 1 Chapter Couple MEC 1 Ride Schedule 13 Assistant Chapter Director: Hello everybody Hopefully you all stay warm over the past few weeks as its been really cold, but this week we got a big break, its 55 degrees today!! Well, its fast approaching.may 16 th through the 18 th, is PA District Rally down in York, PA. If planning on going, don t forget to make reservations at the Motel. And also fill out your reservation forms that will be in the newsletter. There is also a form to fill out to preorder if you would like a T-Shirt for the Rally. 2 MEC Corner: As I sit here and try to say something that is going to be so amazing that you aren t going to be able to put this aside until you have read what I have to say Well I can dream can t I? I hope each and every one of you to realize what a great group you are part of and that you want to share it with everyone you know. Where can you go and get hugs that make you feel good and know that returning that hug means so much to these FRIENDS. You are sure to have FUN when you get together with fellow Goldwingers and beyond a doubt you will be sure to get some KNOWLEDGE thrown in. Invite that neighbor or stranger you see as you travel about to a gathering. As we step into this New Year, let each of us make a resolution to put ourselves out there more and be more open to new adventures. Have you ever led a ride? Try it. Have you ever volunteered to talk about something important at a gathering? Try it. Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone? Try it and you may find that you are that really special person that the rest of us already know. The rules for Roll for the Dough have some changes this year. Let s get out there and visit, visit and visit and not just do it for points. The rewards are there to encourage you but the more important reason to visit is to meet maybe just one person you didn t know and this one person will now be someone you can now say is a friend. You may be the only one able to go to another gathering or event but you won t be alone. Your fellow GWRRA members are right there and believe me, you will be made to feel welcomed. So let each of us say this is going to be our year to shine! Pat Delo PA District MEC

3 PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR: Some of us are starting to think about getting out on the road again. Since we are closing in on the 2019 riding season and most of you are working on getting your bikes ready to go, we need to start to refresh ourselves on the procedures that we will be using this riding season. SAFE PASSING Think about what the other driver might do and what you should do when you pass. When you must pass another vehicle, Motorcycle operators offer these safety tips: Look well ahead, especially on a two-lane highway. Leave enough room to pass safely and don t assume that oncoming traffic will slow down for you. Make sure that you are in a legal passing zone and above all else, check the yellow centerlines and look for No-Passing signs. Be certain that you have enough distance between you and any on-coming traffic to safely pass the vehicle in front of you. You will have to exercise caution here and briefly ignore the two-second rule as you move your vehicle into a passing posture. Although you will not be using the two-second rule, weather conditions, road surfaces, terrain and traffic will play an important part in determining your safe following distance as you begin your passing maneuver. Communicate with other road users. Use your turn signals to alert others of your intentions. Check your blind spots! More often than not, other road users (vehicles) have a tendency to linger along-side motorcycles. Look in both mirrors and make a head check before you move to avoid cutting off another vehicle or running it off the road. Make your pass quickly, but do not exceed the speed limit. If you must travel over the speed limit, the pass is illegal and unnecessary. Once the passing maneuver is complete, signal you return to the right land and don t slow down! Give the vehicle behind you plenty of room. If you have to slow down, this could irritate the driver behind you and may also be another sign that you passed illegally. If you are riding in a group, the same rules above apply except that when the leader decides that a pass is necessary he should notify the tail gunner to secure the lane and when notified by the tail gunner that the lane is secured the entire group on the leaders signal should move out into the passing lane, make the pass and when the tail gunner reports to the leader that he has cleared the vehicle being passed return to the travel lane in the same manner. Passing is one of the more dangerous maneuvers in motorcycling and should not be taken lightly. Again, we encourage everyone to get involved in the Rider Education program to improve your riding skills and knowledge so that you and your passenger enjoy the ride and return home safely. Ride Safe and Ride Proud. Chuck & Evelyn Stone PA DISTRICT EDUCATORS

6 Myth. It's better to lay a motorcycle down if you see an impending crash. More than 30 years ago, before I even had an interest in motorcycling, I remember hearing talk among co-workers about what they would do if they were riding their bikes and saw an impending crash coming. They all agreed that the best thing to do was to deliberately lay their motorcycles down on the ground and avoid the crash. Some had even practiced doing this. I didn't know anything about bikes except that I had always wanted to ride since I was a kid but never did. I thought that this seemed like a strange way to avoid a crash by becoming a crash yourself. Perhaps this was in the days when tires weren't so sticky and brakes were drum only. I do know that the helmets weren't all that great and that many states didn't have helmet laws. So, it seems even more dangerous now as I think about it than it seemed then when I knew nothing about riding. Today, the bikes stop faster, some even have ABS brakes to stop in a straight line on any surface. The helmets are better, the apparel is better. The training is better and people aren't afraid to use their front brakes to stop faster. I predict outriggers, virtually an untapped market, will be the bolt-on accessory of the future as well as the most popular option on a range of motorcycles. Trikes are already big, but everybody doesn t want to publicly admit they need to be on one. Discreet electric outriggers that let you lean in the corners, then deploy automatically at 2 mph, are the wave of the future as we Boomers increasingly segue into true codgerhood. Winters are getting more wintery and summers are getting hotter. We ve had climate-controlled automobiles forever; why can t there be climatecontrolled riding gear? Behold the Feher air-conditioned helmet, DOTapproved and all yours for $ Keeping a cool head goes a long way toward keeping your whole body that way, but why not something in a nice, air-conditioned Aerostich suit? Andy Goldfine where are you? Honda showed its self-balancing Riding Assist Technology motorcycle just over two years ago. Aside from being self-balancing when stopped, it can also follow its owner around like a loyal hound. Once autonomous vehicle technology is grafted on to that, instead of having to remember where you parked, you ll be able to have your motorcycle pick you up at the front door. Sleep at the foot of your bed. Roll over. Fetch. You probably won t

7 FROM PA DISTRICT DIRECTOR: It s February but, I m sitting here composing this letter in January and thinking about all of the snow and cold weather that many of you are dealing with and hoping everyone is safe and warm. I can only wonder what that darn groundhog Punxsutawney Phil will have to say about the rest of our winter. How many months have 28 days? Thank you to everyone for selling the PA District lottery tickets and getting the tickets and money turned into Mike Prince, ACD, by the due date. February is the month when the drawing is held, good luck! Answer: All months have 28 days. March 30, 2019 is the Couple of the Year FUN Day! You will be receiving more information about this FUN Day from your District MEP, Pat Delo and John & Glenda Leib, your District COY Coordinators. They have a great day planned so, if you are a Chapter Couple of the Year, Chapter COY Coordinator or Chapter Director please plan on joining them. Please let us know by April 19 th how many from your Chapter will be attending by contacting us at or at jackson2@zoominternet.net. Hope to see you there it will be an exciting day! What month do people sleep the least? February is the last month to be part of the $100 drawing for full registrations. So, if you are planning on attending the PA District Rally Ride of the Roses May 16-18, 2019 in York, PA this would be a great month to send in your registration and maybe win some money. Don t forget there are several extra events to consider signing up for on the registration. Thursday evening Welcome Party that includes a meal. Friday morning Harley-Davidson Factory tour. Riding Classes: Road Captain, Advanced Rider Course, Side Car and Trike Course. (Your deposit is refunded after you take the class) GWRRA Medic-First Aid course on Saturday. (Fee is for class supplies) Answer: February it is the shortest month. Have you looked at the 2019 Calendar of Events on the PA District website? The year is going to be very busy with chapter gatherings, rides, dinners and ice cream. We hope you are planning on attending the PA District Rally, All Chapters West, district rides and Wing Ding. Remember the Roll for the Dough program started in January. Hope your Chapter has started visitations and earning your points. Please to look at the 2019 Roll for the Dough Guidelines; they have been changed to help your chapter earn more points and have more FUN with your GWRRA family and friends. Don t forget February 14 th is Valentine s Day. Remember to always ride safe! Harold and Diane Jackson Your PA District Directors
