FROM YOUR CHAPTER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR The 2018 riding season is here and officially underway. It may start out a little chilly in the morning, as it did today for the chapter s annual Bunny Rabbit run, but in no time the temperatures were up 34, then to 43. Before we knew it, it was in the mid 50 s. Beautiful day for riding. We met at the McDonald s not far from the first delivery location, for more morning coffee (for me anyway). Our first stop was at the United Methodist Home for Children in Mechanicsburg. The children will find a stuffed bunny in each of the Easter Baskets on Sunday morning. Then it was a nice ride to the Wellspan Gettysburg Hospital, where we were met by some very appreciative staff. With over two hours to kill to meet everyone for lunch at Scalles in Carlisle, John C., Amy and I went on a nice ride through the Caledonia State Park and the Michaux State Forest. Now back to reality and unpredictable weather patterns. I see our ride for April 8 th may be in jeopardy, so watch the Chapter web site and mass s for updates. We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to Rick and Vicki for once again opening their home to the chapter last Saturday, for the Soup n Sundae fellowship. Gary & Judy ACD

FROM YOUR CHAPTER C.O.Y. Did someone say snow??!! It s been a good month, yeah we had some snow, but we always have a great time when we get to spend time with our GWRRA family. We started the month out with going for ice cream! On the 6 th, we headed to Tractor Supply in Dillsburg to follow Rick and Vicki down to York to have some ice cream with other GWRRA members. I believe we had 14 people that came out for some free ice cream (the Chapter paid) and as always, we had a great time. Thanks Deb and Todd Hampson for making the arrangements with DQ. On the 10 th, John & Glenda and John and I went to the Couples Retreat. What a great time we had getting to know new people, and reconnecting with some old friends. Glenda and I were heading back to our room to get something and this man called my name. I turned around and it was Jim Duff from Chapter B. Jim and John will be sharing a room on the 40 to Phoenix trip. Before we went to dinner, they matched us up with a couple to eat dinner with and get to know. Later in the evening, you have to get up in front of everyone and tell them about the other couple. We got paired up with Jim and Becky and it was very cool that Jim and John got to connect before the ride. When we got back on Sunday, John went over to Applebee s to have dinner with other Chapter members. More snow!! John was going to go to the breakfast on the 21 st, but we woke up to snow. I did hear that some of the brave ones went for breakfast. On the 24 th, we went over to Rick and Vicki s for soup and sundae. Vicki and Rick always do an awesome job. The soup was delicious, and of course the ice cream was delicious also. Thanks Rick and Vicki!! On the 25 th, we had the Gathering. This month it was at the Middlesex Diner. Food was good and hot. We will be having our April Gathering at the Middlesex Diner. Hope to see you there. Saturday the 31 st not a bad morning. I asked John if he was riding for the Bunny Run or taking the car. Of course I m riding, so I got all my stuff out of the closet and got ready to go. It was not a bad day to ride. We made our way to McDonald s. Some had bikes and some had cars (4 bikes, 4 cars). We headed over to the Children s Home in Mechanicsburg. They were very appreciative of us dropping off the bunnies. After lots of pictures, we headed to the Gettysburg Hospital where again we were met by people who were very appreciative of the bunnies. More pictures. We had some time before lunch, so John, Gary, and Amy went for a ride. John and Glenda took Wendy and I home. Wendy was having trouble with her heated gear not working and I was having some tooth pain. I took the car and met up with everyone at Scalles in Carlisle to have lunch. Upcoming: April 7 th CPR/First Aid Class CLASS IS FULL April 9 th John leaves for the 40 to Phoenix Ride April 14 th PA Officer Conference April 17 th Ice Cream, Leo s, Carlisle April 22 nd Gathering April 27 th to 29 th Campout in Gettysburg John & Wilda, Chapter K C.O.Y.

FROM YOUR MEC Do you have shirts and/or a jacket to let people know you belong to the Gold Wing Road Riders Association? I have been approached a couple times due to having the Black Chapter Jacket on. It s a good way for someone to start a conversation with you. A few weeks ago, John and I were in Giant and a lady started talking to us about a ride that she was very passionate about. I think we stood there and talked to her for about 10 minutes. Passion was one of the things we talked about at the Couples Retreat. Are you passionate about GWRRA and your bike? Let people know. If you don t have any items with GWRRA on it and you would like some, talk to Kitty Schardt. She will hook you up. The Gathering on March 25 th : 26 Members and 1 Guest in attendance. Wilda Crosson PA-K MEC Chapter K thanks Denny & Kitty Schardt for the generous donation of plates, hot & cold cups, and utensils. It s been added to the Chapter K stash. We appreciate it!

COUPLE OF THE YEAR RETREAT, March 10-11, 2018, Comfort Inn, Duncansville, PA. John and Wilda, and John and Glenda attended the retreat. Some pictures are below from Glenda: Representatives from Chapters B, I, K, T, P, and W, along with the PA District Couple attended the C.O.Y. Retreat. John and Wilda were paired with Becky and Jim Duff from Chapter B. Red Solo Cup Game you had to blow up a balloon and see how many red solo cups you could knock over before your opponent.

Chapter K Soup and Sundae, March 24, 2018 We had 21 Chapter K members and 2 Chapter B members attend the soup and sundae social at our home on March 24 th. The pictures below are compliments of Glenda Leib. We also had a professional photographer, Curt Werner, come and take some really nice pictures of our Chapter with the 2017 Chapter of the Year Plaque and our mascot, the Plain Brown Wrapper bear. Of course, we had ice cream with all the toppings. Yum yum.

BUNNY RUN, March 31, 2018 We had a really nice group of Chapter K folks participate in our Bunny Run on Saturday, March 31 st. A few brave souls rode their bikes a little too cold for this writer/rider. We went to the United Methodist Home for Children in Mechanicsburg and then to Gettysburg Hospital. Some pictures of this very worthwhile cause, compliments of Glenda Leib.

GLENDA & VICKI S FUNNY CORNER How children perceive their Grandparents: I was in the bathroom putting on my makeup, under the watchful eyes of my young granddaughter as I d done many times before. After I applied my lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper goodbye! I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper goodbye My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was and I told him, 72. My grandson was quiet for a moment and then he asked, Did you start at 1? After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, Who was THAT? A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods. The little girl was wide-eyed, taking it all in. At last she said, I sure wish I d gotten to know you sooner! My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike? I mentally polished my halo and I said, No, how are we alike? You re both old, he replied A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather s word processor. She told him she was writing a story. What s it about? he asked. I don t know, she replied. I can t read. I didn t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door saying, Grandma, I really think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself! When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, It s no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, I m not sure. Look in your underwear, Grandpa, he advised. Mine says I m 4 to 6. (WOW! I really like this one it says I m only 38!) FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR

DAIRY QUEEN, March 6, 2018: Thanks Todd & Deb Hampson for setting up our March ice cream ride. Even though we couldn t ride the bikes, we still had a really nice turn out. We even had Barry & Denise Ness from Chapter B join us. For those who missed it, Chapter K paid for the ice cream for those who attended. Fun evening!!

Hello everyone. Last month, we started talking about GWRRA s Rider Education Program (REP). If you missed it, look up the March newsletter to read about the purpose of the program. To refresh your memory, Level I is all about commitment, and Level II is education. As they say on many TV commercials, But wait there s more! There are two more levels to REP. Do you have what it takes to up your game in motorcycle safety? The following information is taken from the GWRRA website. Level III: Safety by Preparedness Level III of the REP is also referred to as Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid or CPR and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times. It would be wonderful if we could achieve the coveted goal of zero accidents, however, we know realistically, accidents will happen. Because of this, it is important to be fully prepared to lend aid to unfortunate accident victims. It is important to always be prepared to save a life. Level III of the Rider Education Program was developed to deal with such circumstances by recognizing and encouraging proper First Aid or CPR training. CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), has been used to save many lives. Being trained to render CPR or First Aid is a tremendous asset to those the REP participant will come in contact with daily. Requirement: Current in Level ll and have taken either First Aid or CPR training. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $4.00 per participant. Receive: "Certified Tour Rider" or "Certified Co-Rider" patch. Level IV: Safety By Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness Level IV is the most prestigious of the REP levels and is referred to as Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the highest commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to safe riding and preparedness. This commitment is shown by a demonstrated history of safe miles and current certification in both First Aid and CPR. These Master Tour Riders/Co-Riders are the finest example to everyone, of the highest commitment to safe motorcycle operation and preparedness. Level IV of the REP, the Master Tour Rider, was designed for those special caring individuals who desire to "be all they can be" with regards to motorcycle safety. The requirements are more stringent than Level III and require a greater commitment. These individuals are caring, trained, and prepared with the experience to back them up. It is realized Level IV is not for everyone, but for those who desire to be of greater service to their fellow man, it is the correct prescription.

Why desire to be a Level IV Master Tour Rider? It's a worthy goal. Being prepared to save a life is a high calling indeed! These individuals are shining examples to the rest of the GWRRA membership. Others aspire to practice the same commitment as displayed by those who have attained Level IV. For that reason, because these individuals are ambassadors to the members at all levels, GWRRA provides a special gathering to celebrate the Master Tour Rider commitment each year at the District Rally, Region D Rally and Wing Ding. Requirement: Current in Level lll for one year and have taken both First Aid and CPR training. Have 25,000 Safe Miles and must be committed to the suggested riding with "Proper Riding Gear" at all times. Cost: $35.00 for each participant (Black and Gold patch is available for another $8.00). Receive: "Special Triangular" patch with dark blue border and your individual Master number embroidered on it. Note: all Level Program Patches are also available in "Black and Gold" at a charge of $1 extra per level for levels I, II, and III. So, there you have the program structure: Level I Safety by Commitment Level II Safety by Education Level III Safety by Preparedness Level IV Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness The GWRRA is proud to present the Rider Education Program. We encourage you to think seriously about motorcycle safety and be a participant in the GWRRA Rider Education Program. You should also remember the old cliché, "an ounce of prevention IS worth a pound of cure." Always wear protective riding apparel! If you are ready to sign up for the program, or if you have questions, please contact me at prosemi2017@gmail.com. I will be more than happy to help you. Remember to be seen, and have FUN getting there! Doug Motter Pennsylvania District Educator
