August 2017 Friends for Fun, Safety, & Knowledge The Letter T for NH-T represents the following: Together Everyone Achieves More Directors Corner As we close the month of July, we say goodbye to another great New England Districts Rally. The rally journey began with its announcement in Each Chapter was tasked with building a Piñata for the Friday evening piñata contest with a theme of Back to Basics. After discussion among the Chapter, it was decided to go with a design developed by Christine Davidson, who further constructed the piñata on behalf of the Chapter. As of a result of the creativity that went into the Chapter piñata, NH-T easily rose to the top and took first place in the NH District. Chris Ferris, Christine Davidson, and Carol George began their journey to Sturbridge, Mass on Wednesday, avoiding the torrential downpours that would be introduced to the area on Thursday. A few of us rallied with them to give a proper send off. Dave & Theresa Parker, Russ and Cassy Powers, and your Chapter Directors caught up with everyone on the day of the banquet (closing ceremonies). For those who attended, there were many options for rides and many opportunities to meet new people or mingle with known friends. pg. 2
On the evening of the banquet, there were plenty of representatives from all over New England, including NY, PA, and MD. NH-T had a large representation with 9 of us sitting at the same table. The three highlights for the evening event were the announcement of the NH District Couple of the Year (COY) David and Bonnie Bolster, the announcement of the 2018 New England Districts Rally, and the unexpected announcement of the youngest rider at the Rally. Can you guess who received this award? pg. 3
The 2018 New England Districts Rally is one not to miss! This event will be hosted at the Wyndham Hotel in Southbury, CT from July 26 through 28. Our goal for 2018 is to encourage you all to attend. Our recommendation is to book the hotel now and register as soon as possible. We have already registered for this Rally and have our room booked. If you need to change your dates at the hotel, do it as you approach the Rally dates. Otherwise, there is a very good chance all rooms could be booked and you will miss an opportunity to stay at the Host hotel. For further information on the 2018 Rally, please see the flyer at the end of this newsletter. Thank you to the NE Districts Rally Team for an awesome and safe rally. NH-T would like to send a special thank you to Kevin and Georgia LeBlond for your hard work, dedication, leadership, and ability to produce a successful and fun event. The month of August begins with our Gathering on August 12. Currently, the Gathering is planned to start at 10:00 AM. However, this time could change if the weather permits a ride. If weather is clear, we will have a planned ride and likely change the start time to 9:00 AM, and possibly meet at Depot Honda in Rye instead of the Legion in Epping. An will follow as we approach, so please keep an eye out for the changes. pg. 4
The summer will close with the beginning of September and Labor Day. However, this is when New England becomes alive with Fall foliage rides. We will have a planned ride in September to the Kancamagus Highway; we hope you will join us in this fun ride. As always, please ride safe. See you at our August 12 Gathering! And importantly - "Thank you to the NE Districts Rally Team for an awesome rally. A special thank you to Kevin and Georgia LeBlond for your leadership and ability to produce a successful and fun event." Tom & Kathy Fallon NH-T Chapter Directors Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge pg. 5
From the desk of the Assistant Chapter Directors Hey everyone, the summer is in full swing so that means hot temps are upon us. Here below is some safety suggestions while working outside in your yard, having a picnic or even working on your bike or trike: Working Safely in Hot Weather With the high temps that we have and will have experienced, remember that working outside carries potential health hazards. Here are some guidelines for staying safe while working in the heat: Drink 5 to 7 ounces of fluids every 20 minutes. Eat lightly. Heavy, hot meals divert blood to the stomach and make it harder to remain cool. Caffeine beverages and certain medications increase the risk of heat stress. Take short rest periods in shade or air conditioning. Do not take salt tablets. Signs of heat-related illnesses include nausea, dizziness, flushed or pale skin, heavy sweating and headaches. Victims of heat-related illness should be moved to a cool place, given cool water to drink, and have ice packs or cool wet cloths applied to the skin. If water is refused, or vomiting or loss of consciousness occurs, immediately call 911. We understand during those hot days when you are out on your bike or trike, it feels like you are in a convection oven and its tempting to take layers off to keep cool but remember, "all the gear all the time". You will sweat BUT you will be protected while riding. If you can purchase a summer jacket that still has the armor in it that way you won't compromise on safety and again drink plenty of fluids. Two last and important things to be aware of is your eyes and skin protection. Just remember folks summer time is a great time to do those outside projects, go to the beach and so on, but be aware and take precautions like using sun screen to prevent sun burns. I know about this very well because I burn very easy. Drink lots of water and use sun glasses to protect your eyes as well. Happy and Safe riding miles to all!!! 7 Diner Dash ~ Fun or Challenge? By: Chris I suppose many of you know of or are participating in the NH-T Diner Dash. Basically, it is a chapter game, thanks to Ann Nassiff, to see who can visit fourteen diners in NH, VT and MA. At the end of the riding season, about the end of October, a winner will be announced. I can tell you from my own experience it is really BOTH. When the question comes up, where to go on a ride, all you need to do is pick one and take the wonderful NE backroads to get there. What a treasure we have to explore. That and diners are such a neat place to visit. So far, Carol and I have managed to visit nine of them and I m pretty sure we may make it to the last five. On the 3 rd of July, we decided to go and have brunch at the Chelsea Royal Diner in Brattleboro, VT. It was interesting that diner should be on the list. Three years ago, six of us from California stopped there for lunch on our NE fall trip. It really wasn t a planned stop, rather a stop waiting for a tow truck to arrive. One of the group had an alternator failure across the street. How convenient is that? Not the failure, the location lol. Wow. So, it was nice to revisit the diner. Our trek over took us through Raymond, Hooksett, Henniker, Hillsborough, & Keene to mention a few. What a wonderful ride and beautiful scenery. After having a fun lunch, we went on a tour of Brattleboro with Carol in the lead as she grew up there. What a great tour that was. To get back we took a little more southerly route through Dublin, Wilton, Milford and Amherst. Just west of Amherst Carol started having strange noises and vibrations coming from her front wheel so it was decided to stop riding it there. We must give credit to the Rescue Plus benefit that is part of the GWRRA membership. Their call center was excellent and helped arrange a pickup in the middle of a holiday weekend. They are using some pretty nice technology for locating you. If you call from a cell phone, and don t have the GPS turned off, they locate you from that. Much better than the old way where you needed to provide an address location. Sometimes being on a highway that was not possible. The rescue driver was a bit feisty at first being on the long weekend and near the end of his day. Must say he knew his stuff and had the bike loaded and secured. In the end, he seemed pleased with his experience with us. If any of you have not yet started trying some of these diner challenges you are really missing out on a fun time and great riding. It s never too late to start. Even if you only do one diner it is one you may not have otherwise visited. pg. 7

July Meeting As you can all imagine, business is never usual when planning for the District Rally. At our July 8 th meeting, the excitement was in the air with a dash of Chapter business thrown in. We knew the NH-T Chapter was going to be well represented at the District Rally and the final piñata build was on display. Team cohesion and artistic talent all in one room. We were indeed Riding The Wave. Russ presented us with excellent tips for Personal Safety. All too often, we all end up in situations where we have to make quick decisions. Reminders of how to react may reduce the time needed to protect ourselves. This includes at work, when traveling, and yes, even in our homes. GWRRA Chapter shirts have been designed and work is being done to acquire more at a reasonable cost. There was no ride after this meeting. Mother Nature kept teasing that she wanted us to take a day off. So, instead of riding, we had an opportunity to prep the bikes for the next adventure. A good way to use that riding day will be the Diner Dash. Also, potential rides as we enter the late summer heading into fall. There may be a ride to the Kanc planned for September. The 50/50 raffle went to the rookie, (I didn t know I could be so lucky). Must have been rigged. We continue to look for a Chapter Education Officer. I bet someone is really eager to share their vast knowledge. The next meeting will be on August 12 th. pg. 9
