1 CNCPS COUNCIL OF NORTHERN RN CALIFORNIA PH ILILILATELIC SOCIETIES 1110 Hillcrest Dr, Lafayette, CA COUNCIL COURIER VOL 15 No 2 The APS Show at Reno The APS AmeriStamp Expo was held in Reno March 3-5 at the Atlantis Hotel. AmeriStamp Expo is a special APS exhibition showcasing One-Frame exhibits. In addition to a general competition, the show features a Champion of Champions (CofC) class that pits all of the OFE Grand Award winners from each of the national-level shows. Another special event at the show is a Team Competition among teams of five formed by exhibitors. The teams score points for medal level achieved, new exhibits/exhibitors and special awards. The team with the best total score wins. It is a friendly, but very serious, competition! The Collectors Club of San Francisco fielded three teams of exhibitors, and all three teams did exceptionally well individual results are on page 10. The show had 210 Frames: 29 Multi-frame Exhibits in 113 Frames 71 One-frame Exhibits in the Open competition 21 One-frame Champions in the CofC competition 5 One-frame Youth Exhibits Plus a number of non-competitive exhibits. A number of questions arise at this time every year (dues collection time) about what the clubs get for their ten bucks. It is a fair question, because a lot of what the Council does is not visible to everyone or not associated in people s minds with the CNCPS. Perhaps some clues can be seen by the Committees that are part of the Council: The Council Courier and the web site attempt to keep clubs and member societies aware of what is going on in our area (Northern California, Northern Nevada and Southern Oregon). The Council promotes local philately through support for clubs through the Speakers Bureau for club programs, exchange of membership recruiting and retention ideas through the Council Courier, and support for stamp shows through: Publicity Exhibition Judges for local shows Loan of exhibit frames The Chaloner and Holmsten awards are two of the ways that the Council encourages local philately. The Council provides a training ground for future leaders in organized philately on the local, area and national levels. 2

4 PRESIDENT S COLUMN Fellow Collectors: I spent the three days at the APS Spring Show in Reno and was impressed by the good representation of people from Council clubs. I counted over dozen who volunteered in various capacities, representing almost every club in the Council. Member Council exhibitors also did well, and there were many Council dealers. It was a good show from the social point, and I hope from the financial point as well. The next big show is WESTPEX which always gets (and always deserves) huge participation. However, the Council needs volunteers to staff the information table during the show. Akthem Al Manaseer will be putting up a sign-up sheet online which will be found through the Council website. At least two members per club are needed to fully staff the table. [Volunteers may also contact me at larry.crain@gmail.com to sign up.] All members of Council clubs are invited to attend the Council meeting during WESTPEX at 12:00 Sunday, April 30, in Room 8024 at the SFO Marriott. WPL On the Move! Well, not really moving just a change of address. The new postal address is: Western Philatelic Library PO BOX 7063 Redwood City, CA The FWPL, Inc. is the same as above. The previous mailing address was a PO BOX in Sunnyvale, a residual part of the previous physical location of the library in Sunnyvale. The physical location remains the same at the building that was purchased in 2014: 3004 Spring Street (corner 2nd & Spring Streets) Redwood City, CA Telephone: libry@att.net Larry Crain Introduce a Fellow Collector to your next Club Meeting. The hobby grows richer when we expand our social contacts and friendships. 4

5 Around the Council: Clubs and Members Council Clubs dues are due! If you are the Treasurer of your club, please respond promptly when the Council Treasurer Nigel Moriarty sends out your Club s Dues Invoice. 10 Bucks is a deal! The California Collectors Club Friday 13 January 2017 was lucky for the members of CCC. Vesma Grinfelds reports that CCC celebrated their annual New Year Dinner at the Europa Café, a few blocks from their meeting venue in San Francisco. Members who have paid their dues received a steeply discounted dinner! All of the officers and members who attend the monthly meetings were present. Members of the California Collectors Club at their annual New Years dinner sharing philately and fellowship. The dinner included delicious food with an old world European flavor. There was lots of chatter among all concerning philately. The Club will surely hold this event next year again!! CCC meets at the St. James Episcopal Church, 4620 California St., between 8th 5 and 9th Ave. 6:30 PM on the second Friday of each month. For more information contact President Ian Anton at Everyone is welcome. Friends of the Western Philatelic Library Note the new mailing address for FWPL and the Western Philatelic Library PO Box 7063, Redwood City, CA Volunteers Dave Moore is busy modernizing the FWPL web site, and Nestor Nunez is leading the effort to re -certify the Library s non-profit status. The WPL is located in its own building in Redwood City at 3004 Spring Street. Their normal hours are posted on their web site: or call for info. Collectors Club of San Francisco The Club fielded 3 Teams ( Red, White and Blue ) to participate in the Team competition for one-frame exhibits at the APS Show in Reno. See page10 for their results. Team Red: Captain Behruz Nassre Team White: Captain Vesma Grinfelds Team Blue: Captain Clyde Homen CCSF President Behruz Nassre has formed a search committee to locate a new meeting place. The Club had met at L Olivier Restaurant for quite a few years. Previously, the CCSF had managed to close four restaurants in as many years!

RSC Member, award-winning Exhibitor, Council Judge, and all-around good guy Bob Grosch published a profusely illustrated article in the March American Philatelist on one of his favorite topics, The Boston Negative Cancels. It is the sort of subject that can really be a fascinating pursuit. Well done, Bob!
