1 CNCPS COUNCIL OF NORTHERN RN CALIFORNIA PH ILILILATELIC SOCIETIES PO BOX 37, Alamo, CA COUNCIL COURIER VOL 13 No 4 Dynamic Duo Wins Chaloner Trophy (L-R) Past Council Presidents David McNamee and Vesma Grinfelds presenting the Chaloner Trophy to Terri and Harvey Edwards at the Awards Banquet July 25 in Reno. Harvey and Terri Edwards (shown above) were honored with the 2015 Chaloner Memorial Trophy, the Council s highest award given for sustained service to philately in the Council area. Harvey and Terri have been the mainstay of the Greater Reno Stamp & Cover Show for the past 15 years. Harvey serves as the Chair of the Show Committee and Terri handles the Exhibits and Judges for the show. The show was most recently held July at the International Bowling Center Hall of Fame Room in Reno. The Chaloner Trophy consists of a permanent plaque with the recipients names plus small individual engraved mementos. The plaque stays with the recipient until awarded the following year. First awarded to Henry Chaloner in 1951, we are on our fourth plaque to record all the recipients since then. Harvey was recently elected to his third term as Director of the Nevada Stamp Study Society, and Terri has previously served NSSS as President and Treasurer. See more pictures from the show beginning on page 8. Getting the Word Out in the Community Nancy Swan, Bradley Fritts and Larry Crain of the Southern Oregon Philatelic Society put together a joint philatelic display for the Medford, Oregon public library. Way to go, guys! Also: spotted in the Carmel local newspaper, The Carmel Pine Cone for September 4, is a front page feature on stamp collecting written by a staff reporter who does not appear to be a collector. The article gives a nice basic message of the fun in stamp collecting. The end of the article gives the Monterey County Stamp Club meeting time and place: the fourth Thursday each month at St. Ansgar s Luthern Church in Salinas. Free publicity! A number of questions arise at this time every year (dues collection time) about what the clubs get for their ten bucks. It is a fair question, because a lot of what the Council does is not visible to everyone or not associated in people s minds with the CNCPS. Perhaps some clues can be seen by the Committees that are part of the Council: The Council Courier and the web site attempt to keep clubs and member societies aware of what is going on in our area (Northern California, Northern Nevada and Southern Oregon). The Council promotes local philately through support for clubs through the Speakers Bureau for club programs, exchange of membership recruiting and retention ideas through the Council Courier, and support for stamp shows through: Publicity Exhibition Judges for local shows Loan of exhibit frames The Chaloner and Holmsten awards are two of the ways that the Council encourages local philately. The Council provides a training ground for future leaders in organized philately on the local, area and national levels. 2
3 Council Matters: No Meeting this past Quarter Election of CNCPS Officers In accordance with our By-Laws, we will hold an election at the last Council Meeting of the year this year at PENPEX on Sunday December 6 at 1 PM. To be elected are: the four officer positions for a four-year term: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Declared candidates (so far): President: Larry Crain Vice President: open Secretary: Bob Pope Treasurer: Nigel Moriarty Self-nominations can be made by contacting the President or by showing up at the PENPEX meeting December 6 at 12:30 PM. It is YOUR Council, and we encourage all to participate! New Web Site Launched Ed Bierman of the Sequoia Stamp Club has accepted the position of CNCPS Webmaster, replacing Tim Burgess. It was an honor and great opportunity serving this Council and its members for two consecutive terms. Highlights of changes during my term as president included updating the constitution and establishing a process to evaluate new apprentice judges. The written feedback form was introduced to local shows to help exhibitors improve their exhibits. The Council table at WESTPEX was established and is running successfully. We have a new web site, and I look forward to working with the next President and Council. Special appreciation to David McNamee, Vesma Grinfelds and Tim Burgess for their continuous support in many activities that made my job at the Council more easy to perform. I would also like to thank all of our volunteer Judges and individuals for helping at many Council shows and their participation. Please me at akthem@pacbell.net if you have any thoughts or questions that you want me to include at the next Council meeting. Finally, I strongly encourage you to consider serving on the Council board; a few positions are still available. Our elections will be held in Redwood City at PENPEX December 6 at 12:30 PM. Sincerely, Akthem Al-Manaseer, CNCPS President
