1 June 2005 Volume 46 Number 7 Marianne Robinson s Lagonda going to England Marianne has sold her 1934 Lagonda Tourer to a Lagonda club member in England and it is on it s way to the new owner, Christopher Claridge-Ware. Christopher was the rallyist who drove a similar Lagonda on the 40 car Round the-world rally several years ago. When the rally stopped over in Anchorage, the Robinsons helped Christopher with a number of repairs. In addition, Robbie loaned the engine from his Lagonda racer to Christopher when his engine failed at Ross River, Canada. After he finished the rally back in London, he shipped his Lagonda over to Jim Walters restoration shop in Victoria, Canada. In the meantime, Robinson s had sent their Lagondas down to Jim s shop for engine and tranny work.. Robbie s engine was reinstalled in the racer. Unfortunately, the racer was cremated over a year ago In a horrific 16 car fire in the restoration shop. Chris Lagonda was also in the fire but suffered only modest damage. Marianne s Lagonda survived as it was in another building. Her car won Best of Show last spring at The (500 car) All British Car Meet in Vancouver B.C. as well as Best of Show (450 cars) in May in Bellevue, Wash. All British Car Meet. The Robinson s and Christopher-Claridge have kept in contact the past few years and he recently asked if Marianne would sell her Lagonda to him. She agreed but with some (sellers regret!) The good news is that Christopher has signed up for 2007 Paris to Peking rally and the 2006 Mille Miglia in Italy. In other words he is going to Rally big time with Marianne s Lagonda. The car was the 2nd 1934 model M454.5 liter) made and was Press car in October It has a prestigious record of rallying in England, Malaysia and Singapore before she purchased it in Singapore in She continued racing and rallying Southeast Asia and South Africa before bringing it to Alaska in So it is going home to England and oddly enough, it will be located a short drive from its birthplace in Staines.

The June meeting will be the start of our drive arounds. Gary stoops has made plans for what sounds like a very interesting trip around the south end of town. The long distance tour takes off at the end of June with Master Header Bruce Campbell in the lead. It s going to be a nice trip. The joint meet with Fairbanks is set for the weekend of Aug.12-14, in Fairbanks. More on this later. Try to keep these dates open, as this is one week after the Show and Shine on the Park Strip. Six cars came to the 500 Sales Show, and three of them were yellow. Try to come to the June meeting as it should be short with a lot of information and then on to entertainment. 3 JUNE 2005 TinkeringTmes PAGE 3 Picnic We have been invited to show our cars at Alaska Native Medical Center Employee picnic in on June 17.. Time of the picnic is 11AM til 2pm. The location is behind the Ak Native Medical Center (4315 Diplomacy Dr. Look for the tents in the area. They will provide 3 canopies for our use in case of rain. There will be about 2300 employees attending. Most will eat and return to their jobs, but some may want to have their pictures taken, either in or standing by our cars. The theme is Happy Days, so feel free to dress appropriately. Picnic lunch will be provided for those showing cars. Sounds like a fun day. Give me a call if you plan to attend. Howard June 8 Drive-a-round Weather permitting we will be doing a cruise after the June 8 meeting. We will be traveling to Jerry Miller s home at Prominence Point off Goldenview, off Rabbit Creek Rd to see his Fantastic car collection. He has Rolls, Bentley, Porsche, Lotus, Ford, Mustang, Thunderbirds and Chevrolet all in #3 or better condition. Some are hotrods, all are in very nice condition, and all are in his basement. After that we will travel to Bird Ridge Café for cinnamon rolls. Gary Stoops Alaska Sales & Service 500 Show Kurt arrived at Alaska Sales & Service about 9:15am to find the Schurman s 1917 Ford T truck C cab all clean and shiny black already there. I didn t know the old folks got up so early. Kurt drove his 38 Packard convertible. A few minutes later Jim Swanson and Dave Beck arrived with Jim s 49 Jeepster and 29 Model A coupe. Fred walked back home to bring down his yellow 50 Ford sedan. Other cars followed, Hansen s Kaiser Dragon and that s it. In all there were 6 of us. Kurt Rein Mystery Picture Last month s mystery picture was of Bob Brown and his 1931 Model A Ford. This month s puzzle is a 3 part one. Who is it, what kind of car is it, and where was it taken?

His Car lot We went there to see his collection of Frazer and Kaiser cars, but found much more than that. We were welcomed like old friends, and before we went to the museum we were invited into their lovely home for a get acquainted visit. Their house, which looks more like a lodge than a private home, is located high in the Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah(7000ft.). Most amazing is that they built it themselves over a period of years. Bill s dad was one of the original Kaiser-Frazer dealers in Florida and stayed with them to the end. I d Like to take this baby out on the highway! Bill and his wife were in the computer

business when he and his son developed a computer software program for banks which was highly successfuland allowed them to retire to the life they now enjoy.

Adopt-A-Road May 14 Rain was predicted for June 14 and we thought a cool drizzle would be welcome to keep the cleanup volunteers cool. However, we had a beautiful partially sunny day:not too cool and not too hot. but just right. The debris was not as bad as we had anticipated for the first adopt-a road of the year and with 23 volunteers it did not take long to clean up Northern lights. We did have a glitch. We had made arrangements at the Muldoon Pizza Hut for lunch but when we arrived, to our dismay; it had been closed for some unknown reason. We then proceeded to Applebee s where we all had a good experience. We were all impressed with Bob and Alpha Brown s Museum. Thanks to the Browns for their hospitality and for allowing us to take up their Saturday afternoon by hosting us. Storage Needed?
