1 Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska Volume 57, Number 5 Model A s Lead Way Into Summer Fredenhagen by Jim Fredenhagen Saturday, April 22nd, was a beautiful Spring day for our third annual Model A Talkeetna Lunch Run. We were blessed with dry pavement and 50 + temperatures. By the time we all met at the Three Bears grocery in Wasilla there were 15 cars: 13 Model A s, a 1929 Chevrolet Sedan and a very nice 1931 Franklin. Had we stayed there any longer it would have been a car show! Share-the-Road for Shakedown Shakedown Cruise to Knik River Lodge is May 13th with lunch planned for 1:00 PM. If you did not sign up at the April meeting be sure to call Donn with the number in your party so he can supply the restaurant with an accurate count for lunch. We will share the road with Backcountry Bike and Ski, who will host a cycling event along the Knik River Road, possibly during the time we are on the road. The road has no shoulders, so watch for oncoming vehicles and bikes. The cyclists, of course, have the right-of-way. Let s all have a fun and uneventful day sharing the road with these folks. A group of Model A s ventured out into the warm spring air for a trip of about 114 miles (240 round trip) to Talkeetna for lunch on Saturday, April 22nd. The group was made up of AAMA members, the Alaskan A s and guests driving a 1929 Chevrolet and a 1931 Franklin. It was a great combined AAMA and Alaskan A s event with 10 of the 12 A s from AAMA and the rest from the Alaskan A s. The original destination in Talkeetna was the Denali Brewing Company, but parking was too crowded so we ended up going down the road to the Latitude 62 lodge and restaurant, where we had a great lunch and very ample parking. We found it interesting that Talkeetna had so much activity so early in the year. In years past we d always been able to park in front of Denali Brewing Company. Guess it s another global warming thing... The following AAMA members brought their A's: Tom/Marcy Cresap (1931 slant window) Dale/Ingrid Dryden (1931 taxi) Jim Fredenhagen (1930 tudor) Louis Finch (1928 special coupe) Carl/ Kathleen Godsoe (1931 pickup steeltop) Rich Golding (1928 fordor town sedan) Ken Holland (1929 coupe) Ted/Colleen Kimzey (1931 tudor sedan) Marianne Robinson (1930 fordor) Lee Truesdell (1930 tudor sedan). Alaskan A s participants were Dave Burkhardt (1930 tudor) Curly Packer (1931 pickup) Chad Ringler (1929 tudor) guests, Dale/Raffa Wright with passengers, Fred Keller/Judy Foster (1929 Chevrolet sedan) and, Bill Fields (1931 Franklin.) Franklin owner, Bill Fields, had seen the advertisement for the event in the on our website, and we may well see him at a future AAMA meeting. His Franklin is very unique and in great condition. Our early bird event ended well with only a few minor mechanical issues. The A s are ready for the season! Consider joining us next year! Cresap The Talkeetna lunch provided a reunion for Ken Holland, center and old friends from his Talkeetna days: Dave and Pam Rannolds. May Meeting 6:30 Rolling Meeting Warm weather is here, so the May 10th meeting will roll. We meet a half hour earlier in order to get done with our business in time to drive around and end up at a local eatery, brasserie or brewpub for requisite refreshments. First Dude, Michael Wiedmer, will plan an awesome itinerary, we are sure. Lots of thanks go to Milt Tanora and Mark Graber for supplying the refreshments at the April meeting.

Vice President David Jensen will be leading his first meeting this month in my absence and I am confident that he will do a fine job. With the fabulous weather and sunshine we have been having, I sure hope everyone is taking advantage of driving your cars around every chance you get. There is no shortage of events to choose from this month, so you will have many opportunities to drive your cars. May 6 is our first Adopt a Road cleanup on Northern Lights between Muldoon and Boniface. Many hands sure make this an easier job for all. We always have amazing breakfast goodies provided by Marcy to get us ready to starting picking up trash. The first cleanup of the year is always the worst with the winter s collection of garbage. After the cleanup you can head to lunch at Garcia s in Eagle River with the Model A Club. The Wednesday night drive arounds will start the week after this month s meeting. We meet at the Sears parking lot on the Benson side near Seward Highway at 6:00. The drive route and dinner/ dessert location is chosen by those there. Have a wonderful month and Happy driving!!!! See you at the June meeting! Gwyn News About Ailing Website Editor s note: The following is a note from Donn Reese, our webmaster. If the weather s nice by all means drive your beauty, and we ll have a display in the parking lot. Call Jim, at , if you have questions. Editor s note: Wayward Vagabonds Return It is Sunday evening, and I was taking a dinner break when the phone rang. It was Diane Allen, and she announced that they had just sounded their motor home horn as they passed by on the highway. Did we hear it? Well, no, we are about a half-mile from the highway, but had we been outside, I m sure we would have. So, the vagabonds have returned. We can look forward to some tall tales about their travels. Welcome home, Allens!

5 Spitting Image Humor by Rich Golding Last Christmas my sister Debbie sent me a home ancestral tracking DNA kit as a present. I got one for myself, too, she explained on the phone, I think we should both have ourselves tested, and then compare the results! All you gotta do is spit into the plastic tube, send it back to me, and then I ll mail both back to them. The results take a few weeks. I think it will be interesting to compare our results! May I confide in you, gentle reader? The prospect of tracing my genetic ancestry, its geographic origins and my family s predisposition for dread diseases does not leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. I view it as the ultimate invasion of privacy, as well as an unwelcome reminder of my genetic tendencies towards halitosis and hairy feet. I particularly deplore the notion that my most personal information is going to be hovering about through cyberspace, forever. Every week, for a couple of months, Debbie would call from California wanting to know if I had completed the test yet. It was getting rather annoying. Thank God for caller ID. Hello, this is Rich. I m sorry I missed your call, but I am currently incommunicado, negotiating extremely sensitive peace treaty terms abroad for our government. Leave a message, and I ll get back to you when I can. Beep. But Sis got wise and called my wife s phone instead. She knows Linda wouldn t lie about my whereabouts. I was in the garage, working under Irving (my 1971 VW Squareback), when I heard her approaching, all the while chattering on her iphone. Her fist, firmly grasping said phone, thrust itself under Irving, and into my face. Here, TALK TO YOUR SISTER! I was commanded. So... have you taken the test yet? asked my sister s voice, sounding like a broken record (note to all those under the 5 age of thirty consult your parents as to the meaning of that phrase). I was stuck. From my vantage point under Irving, I could make out my wife s foot, the heal planted firmly on the garage floor while her toes were tapping out a dance of continuous displeasure. I need not see her face. After forty years of marriage, I can read her feet like a book. Seeing no clear way to put off what now seemed inevitable, I reluctantly agreed to fulfill my sibling duties to my sister, and handed the phone back to Ginger Rogers (under thirties, consult your grandparents on that one). Here, my wife snapped, then thrust a rather ominous looking plastic test tube directly at me. And don t come back into the house until you ve filled it up, I was ordered. I watched her feet turn about and trot back through the door and into the kitchen. Crawling out from under the car and gazing down at the saliva collection test tube, the repulsive act I was expected to perform of filling it with spit caused my mouth to go dry. I dusted myself off and contemplated the task before me. Irving s oil had been changed, and the front end lubed. I just needed to check and top-off the brake fluid and the windshield wiper fluid, when a rather ingenious thought occurred to me. I glanced a double-take at the gallon jug of windshield wiper fluid, the opened can of brake fluid, a half used can of oil and a tube of chrome polish lying side by side on the garage floor, alongside the car. Hmmmm, I thought, this just might work! A moment later I was back in the kitchen, handing the collection tube, perfectly filled to the scrawled line, to Linda. See... she said with a smile, that wasn t so hard, was it? I m going to go out to the post office and send this off to your sister. Out of sight, out of mind. About two months later I got another (See p. 6, Spitting Image) Minutes of April Meeting (Continued from p. 4) to go. Also, turn in your Road Lottery applications starting May 1 st to try and get permits for the 17 th. NATIONAL AACA MEMBERSHIP DUES. A report was received from National HQ that 8 of our AACA members have not renewed their national dues yet. Please renew your dues as soon as possible. SPLIT THE POT - $62 collected - $31 to the winner today. Winner was David Jensen. David donated the winnings back to the club. $5 was collected for No Badges. Birthdays and anniversaries were reviewed by Gwyn. Weekly Drive Around tours on Wednesday David Jensen noted the new Nordstrom Rack store has posted the parking lot as No Parking. We will meet at the other end of the parking lot. Weekly Wednesday runs will start on May 17 th. DIMOND CENTER CAR SHOW PROPOSED. Jim Fredenhagen s friend, Mr. Martin, works at the Dimond Center and is asking if the club would like to have an outdoor Fall car show at the East End of mall next to Best Buy. Jim Fredenhagen will chair the event. More info and date to be announced. JOINT MEET 2017 The Joint meet with the Fairbank Region is now scheduled for July th in Fairbanks. Some discussions with the Vinton s have talked about going through the Fountainhead Museum warehouse to see items NOT on exhibit yet. Tonight s refreshments were provided by the Tanora s and Graber s. Thank you!! Meeting adjourned at 7:35 PM. Submitted Scott Hulse Secretary

6 6 Spitting Image call from my sister. Her voice seemed strained. She sounded bewildered. You remember how you used to tell me that I wasn t really related to you? That Mom and Dad found me in a basket at our front door? Yeah. That... that was a joke, wasn t it? she whispered. I just got the results of our DNA tests back in the mail. I don t understand. My family tree traces back centuries, all from England and Scotland. Yeah. So what? Then how come your s is one hundred percent German? Uhh, there must be some... what did it say about our health? Well, I have a strong heart and good circulation, but it seems that you are prone to several forms of arthritis. Especially your ball joints. I see. And it goes into great detail about problems I might have with my digestion. But all it mentions about the same subject for you is that you tend to use very little gas. Anything else? My blood and body chemistry all appear normal, but you have an alarmingly high chromium count. I ve read a lot about the inaccuracy of these fly by night online companies. I wouldn t pay it any mind. One more thing... What s that? They say they can trace my ancestors all the way back to William the Conqueror. Ah hah... so? They can only trace yours to Ferdinand Porsche.
