1 Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska Tinkering Times Volume 55, Number 3 AAMA s 2015 Rondy Show Hosts Cresap at the show LSHF 51 Silver Cloud Owners: Scott and Sheryl Hulse Built: December, 1958 Purchased new in Calgary, Alberta, Canada 1959 Engine: 6-cylinder, cu. Inch (4887 c.c.) Interesting features: A 4-speed automatic transmission delivers the power to the rear wheels. Performance rating includes a top speed of 106 MPH, and 0-to-60 MPH in13 seconds. The standing quarter mile is 19 seconds, and fuel consumption (presumably not when drag racing) is 15 to 16 MPG The first Silver Cloud was released by Rolls-Royce in April Designed by Blatchley, the Silver Cloud and Bentley S had nearly identical bodies, chassis and technical specifications. Only the radiators and badging were different. About 2359 Silver Cloud chassis were built between 1955 and by Art Isham Well, we had quite a show at Bob s Services on Saturday, February 28 th, and Sunday, March 1 st. Thirty-one vehicles, covering a time span from 1915 through 1967, were on display. Sedans, coupes, convertibles, a hot rod, trucks, a hit and miss engine running a water pump, and a truck-driven portable sawmill. What more could a car nut want? Well how about popcorn and free car books and magazines for our visitors? Of course some of the magazines were old, but the articles, pictures, and advertisements were satisfying, and the facts unchanging. Members displaying their vehicles were: Bill and Kaylene Brown 1955 Thunderbird, 1916 Overland Truck, 1937 GMC Truck, 1967 Pontiac GTO, 1937 Ford, 1958 Isetta. Dick and Barbara Henningsen 1966 Mustang. Jim Fredenhagen 1929 Model A. Mike and Gwyn Wiedmer 1941 Cadillac, 1927 Hupmobile, 1949 Ford. Art and Tamea Isham 1963 Imperial. Brian Anderson 1948 Ford, 1964 Jeep Truck. Stan Williams 1941 Ford Truck. Kurt Rien 1966 Mustang, 1926 Packard. Ted and Colleen Kimzey 1931 Model A. Donn Reese 1960 Imperial. Scott and Sheryl Hulse 1958 Rolls Royce, 1939 International Truck. David Jensen 1957 Thunderbird. Dave Syren 1915 White. Ken Evans 1955 Cadillac. Dale and Ingrid Dryden 1930 Model A Fire Truck, 1931 Model A Taxi. Erik Johnson 1948 Anglia. Tom and Marcy Cresap 1925 Model T. Louie Finch 1928 Model A. Howard and Barb Hansen 1953 Kaiser. Dennis and Diane Allen 1934 Ford. In addition, AAMA president Brian Anderson displayed his beautifully restored Texaco gas pump. We had 243 ballots cast in the People s Choice competition, and the winning vehicle was the 1967 Pontiac GTO, owned by Bill and Kaylene Brown. That is truly an awesome restoration of an iconic brand name and well deserving of the People s Choice Award. Some examples of clever comments on the ballots were: I voted for this because there is a dog in it, I really like it because it is the oldest car here, All of them. I am 4-½ years old, Yay for Jeeps, This ballot outweighs all other ballots cast at this competition; anything for the owner to win 1 st prize by forfeit and finally Awesome. Based on the number of votes, we estimate that visitors passed through the doors. All of the books and magazines were picked up and popcorn sales were good. We also signed up two new members. Thanks to everyone who helped put on the show, and a special thanks to Bob s Services for hosting us. March Meeting Jansen Visitors at the 2015 AAMA show marveled at automobile technology of bye-gone days. "Whitey" visited the AAMA Rondy Car show. A resident at the Pioneer's Home of Alaska, he enjoyed seeing familiar rides from back in his day. Our March meeting will take place at Day Break Center, 9210 Jupiter on Wednesday, March 11th. Come join us to see Donn s trophy and to find what kind of wild and crazy things we can cook up for the spring and summer. Art and Tamea Isham and Linda and Rich Golding will provide refreshments. Many thanks go to Scott Hulse and Dutch Overly for the life-saving sustenance they provided at the February meeting.

2 2 Tinkering Times Running Board Reflections Anderson Fur Rendezvous, 2011 when we had snow on the ground Shirley and Brian Anderson (this year s First Lady and President) participated in the parade with friends from son Will s elementary school as cargo: Daveed Johnson, Irene Finley (a friend from Vancouver, WA) Yesica Johnson, Lyle Johnson, Will Lord (Shirley and Brian s son) Colton Espeland and Guy Johnson. We have just completed another great Fur Rendezvous parade and car show, with fine weather and a strong showing at both events. Although we added a few more cars to the parade than the organizers were comfortable with (18 total), the large number of last-minute requests for VIP rides were all accommodated. Thanks to Kurt Rein for organizing it all, and rolling with the inevitable glitches. At the show, Bill Brown had his shops cleared and clean, and his Overland kept the buzz saw singing. Art Isham designed an innovative layout, which provided some welcome open space in the center of each room, and he somehow managed to position each vehicle in its pre-determined spot. A bunch of other folks worked hard to set up the tables, sell popcorn and hustle magazines, and they even brought in some great food for the participants to enjoy. To top it all off, we welcomed new members Joann Mueller (1941 Ford pickup) and Louis Finch (1928 Ford coupe). By all accounts, public showed up in good numbers and responded well to the display. Thanks to all who contributed to making this another memorable event. The AAMA Executive Board met for the first time this year on February 14, with the primary topic of discussion being the schedule of activities. At the March meeting, the membership will be asked to approve an official list of club sanctioned activities for the year, activities for which we can expect the AACA to provide liability insurance. Of course, additional activities may be approved by the membership as needed, while others may be dropped if a leader can t be found. Other items discussed were possible revisions to the by-laws, mostly to clean up a few of the sections dealing with officers, meeting frequency, etc. We also reviewed some financial obligations for the year, including post office box and website expenditures. Finally, several of us made one last trip to Robinson s clubhouse to remove the remaining club items, thereby concluding this long chapter in AAMA history. Thanks to Art and Tam Isham, and Donn Reese for organizing the final move. As currently envisioned, the Ishams will store the greatly reduced volume of club items for now, but we will ask for volunteers to store them on a rotating basis so that no one has to keep them permanently. 4 4 Rondy Parade Officials Provide Keystone Cop Vagaries by Kurt Rein Fur Rendezvous is a fun time of the year for Anchorage parade fans and participants as well as for us antique car enthusiasts. This was especially true this year, with no snow and relatively warm temperatures. Everything went exactly as planned, but I couldn t get firm commitments from most groups, including the organizers. The only pre-arranged dignitaries, the Palmer Pioneer s King and Queen Regent, rode in the Cresaps Model T. As directed, 13 of our cars had signed up in advance, but suddenly, we had16 or maybe18 I lost count. Jim Fredenhagen s 1929 Model A led our group off with the AAMA banner. Followed by a variety from Model A s to more modern (yet antique) Imperials, a mustangs and a GTO. At that point, I was informed by parade martials that we had too many cars and would make the parade too long; but then, all that was cast in cement turned to Above, Jim Fredenhagen s 1929 Model A Tudor carries the club banner to lead about 18 AAMA cars that appeared in the Fur Rendezvous Parade in Anchorage. At first, the officials were complaining that we had too many cars, but then they came begging for dignitary rides when other vehicles did not show up. At right, Marcy Cresap, granddaughter, Hannah, and Palmer King and Queen Regent, Don and Sharon Benson, enjoy the almost balmy, topdown weather in Tom Cresap s 1925 Model T before the parade. Tinkering Times clay, and officials were asking if we could take more riders in our cars. Hell yeah, what do you need? As it turned out, we stepped in to substitute for some rides for that didn t show up. The American Legion Post King and Queen were very pleased to ride in Scott Hulse s Rolls Royce, the Ice Worm Queen and friend from Cordova decorated Mike Wiedmer s 1949 Ford convertible and the Rondy Pin Designers rode in Mike s 1941 Cadillac. Other dignitaries caught rides in our cars, and a very esteemed guest, Johan Mueller, rode in a 1941 pickup, which had been restored many years ago by Stan Williams, a longstanding former member of AAMA and well-known local car restorer. Everyone fit somewhere in the parade, whether planned or not. We all had great fun and spontaneous adventure which after all, is part of life in Alaska. Thank you all for your participation and cooperation in making our 2015 Fur Rendezvous Parade successful. 5 Tinkering Times 5 Humor by Rich Golding I have a confession to make. I love my iphone. I ve had it for years now, and quite frankly, I can hardly remember life without it. My days start with its alarm clock waking me to the soft, soothing wind chime sounds of a Japanese waterfall, and end with it lulling me to sleep as it plays a relaxing Chopin nocturne. It keeps me in touch with the world by placing my calls ( Siri: call my wife ), sending and checking my ( You ve just received an important investment opportunity from Nigeria! ), and even allows me to surf the web anywhere at anytime (I can read The Tinkering Times in the bathroom). So it only seemed natural that I should extend my smartphone s talents to include my driving time. Accordingly, I took a trip to my friendly local electronics superstore and purchased a new in-dash radio that fits my 44 year old Volkswagen s dashboard. This is no ordinary AM/FM/CD squawkbox, as it also picks up my iphone s signal, linking Gentleman s Lunch For Pioneers This is a pioneer centennial event to be held in Palmer in September All igloos of the state will be present. The theme is Farms, Barns & Colony Charms. We are invited to show our cars at the gentleman s lunch, on September 25. It is a guy s-only event. There should be in attendance. Vehicles for the lunch will gather at the Fairgrounds. They want a sign for each vehicle sharing its history in Alaska. Questions: Mike Weidmer, Congratulations! Our treasurer, Donn Reese, and long-time partner, David Nolta, finally tied the knot while vacationing in Hawaii last January 29th, exactly 20 years after they became a couple. Congratulations, guys! We wish you many years of continued commitment and happiness. You Talkin to Me? wirelessly with it. Now when I am driving, I can keep the phone in my pocket and just announce my needs out loud, directly into a little microphone that sits atop my steering column. My best friend Siri, then fulfills my every wish! But it gets even better than that. I discovered a few days ago that Siri now has several different voices that it can use to respond in. I have been experimenting with these different personas of late. Firstly, I decided to shift from the traditional female voice, as it had become a bit stale with age, to a male one. This guy is great. He s always agreeable and he has a great sense of humor. I drive around town, with him feeding me driving directions. I can even dictate to him my latest humor column, and he laughs at all my jokes. Then one day I discovered that I could take the process a step further and enhance my male Siri s personality with the addition of a specific nationality and so switched on the British variety. It s great. I can now have my own English gentleman s gentleman with me wherever 2015 Long Distance Tour Dawson/Whitehorse Long Distance Tour will leave Anchorage on June 27 th and return on July 3 rd. I was cheerfully greeted, in a proper British accent with Good morning Sir. I trust we slept well last night? Pretty good. What s the time? It s 4:18 in the afternoon, Sir. My immediate reaction was one of shock. Did I just sleep through the day? I m supposed to be at work by 7:30 in the morning! I backed out of the garage and down the driveway. It was very cold and snowy, and the driveway was covered in ice. Siri, what s the weather going to be like today? It appears we re in for another balmy day, Sir. A lovely, warm and sunny day, I should think. No need for your bumbershoot or galoshes, Sir. May I suggest that you stow them in the boot. Confused and understandably concerned, I decided to take a detour and head directly to the Apple store. Their genius behind the counter spotted the (See p. 7, You Talkin to Me?) 2. 6 6 Tinkering Times by Tom Cresap For many years, I have exchanged newsletters with a number of AACA chapters in the Lower 48 and beyond. This New Members We would like to welcome new members, Johann Mueller (1941 Ford pickup) and Louis Finch (1928 Ford coupe). We look forward to seeing you at our meetings and sharing the fun of our many events. by Jim Fredenhagen I m passing on a modification I ve used for the last three years with good results. You can do this easily to your Model A engine when it s apart. Ron s Machine Shop in Shandon, Ohio makes this modification on all the engines they rebuild for Snyders. We all know the center main bearing wears the most, even in a counter-weighted engine. This addition pressurizes the bearing with oil directly from the oil pump cavity and minimizes the wear. It is only advisable with a Babbitt bearing, because the oiler hole in the bearing cap lines up with the oil groove and that distributes the oil pressure around the bearing, whereas an inserted cap would not have that same oil groove. The install is straightforward (1) 6 x 3/16 copper tube, (1) 90-degree 3/16 x 1/8 female flare fitting, (1) 45-degree 3/16 x 1/8 female flare fitting, (2) 1/8 male flare fittings, flaring tool, 1/8 pipe thread tap, 21/64 drill bit, drill press or vice + steady hand, angle drill, courage to put a hole in your block and bearing. Some notes about the process: (1) Drill the cap close to the center so the hole intersects the oil groove. (2) Don t overly tap the cap or block; the fitting should be snug but not go into the inner block or Babbitt. (3) Drill the block hole 1 1/8 down from the pan deck. (4) Mark the spot where the 45-degree face of the block fitting is parallel to the line of the camshaft. (5) Use the angle drill to drill the Editorial: Looking Around, Sharing Ideas exchange is part of a program fostered by AACA, and it is one that throughout my 14-year tenure as editor has provided me with a broader perspective about what we are doing with our antique cars. To begin with, I have found that we share many similarities with our fellow chapters, afflicted as we are with the oldcar sickness. With the exception of a few white-glove-only car owners, we join a brotherhood of people who love to tinker with and drive old vehicles. What s more, Save the Babbit in That Center Main Godsoe The oil line transfers oil directly from the pump to the center main bearing. block at 90 (6) Good to make a 1/8 pilot hole for both cap and block holes. (7) Deburr any Babbitt left around oiler hole in cap so oil flow is smooth. Hope the photo helps. Feel free to call me with thoughts, suggestions. After 3 seasons on my engine, I couldn t detect any wear when I checked it last winter when I did rods/rings. I can tell my bearing is getting increased oil pressure because the castle nut under the water inlet weeps oil now that never did before. Anything to save our Babbitt! Cheers, Jim Editor s note: before proceeding and drilling a hole in your block double check with Jim to verify all fitting and tube sizes. That s just in case we slipped up. we all love to eat. 7 Tinkering Times 7 Ted Kimzey adjusts the Loyal Hahn Buzz Saw during the Rondy Car Show. (Continued from p. 5 problem immediately. You re using the new British voice, aren t you? I nodded in the affirmative. Your problem, he said, is that Siri is telling you the time and weather for London. It s all part of the U.K. package. I m afraid that if you are looking for more accurate, local information, you re going to have to switch voices. The young man could sense my frustration from the wistful look of disappointment written across my face. Concerned, he asked me a few questions about myself, some a bit personal. Not to worry! I think we may have just the thing for you, he said cheerfully. We ve got a few new voices that we are still working on that haven t been released to the public just yet. And judging from your personality and lifestyle responses, I think one of them might be perfect for you. I would be happy to install a beta copy of it on your phone, if you'd like. Reluctant to see my Britannic manservant move on, I shrugged my shoulders and told the fellow to go ahead with the personality transplant. An hour later I was back behind the wheel of my car. I started the engine, and stared cautiously at the speaker on the dash. Hello... hello Siri, are you there? I whispered nervously into the microphone. Personality loading... please standby, came a female response. This time it was different though. More assertive and definitely more mature in character. Then came: Congratulations. Your Jewish Mother voice has installed successfully. Cresap Jansen Jansen David Jensen s constant companion, Layla, waits patiently. You Talkin to Me? Nervous and biting my lip, I said Hello. My name is Richard. I m glad to meet you. Hello Richard, replied the caring, matronly voice from the radio, How may I help you? Hmm... let s see, my mind raced. What s the weather going to be like today? It s cold out there. Why aren t you wearing your scarf or gloves? You should know better than that! I beg your pardon? I replied a bit confused. You heard me. Do you want to catch a cold? Ah... no... I guess I just forgot them this morning when I left the house. That s no excuse. You ve got to learn to take better care of yourself. How much sleep did you get last night? Did you eat a good breakfast this morning? Before I could respond she broke in with Sit up straight. Stop slouching. It s almost nine o'clock, you re going to be late for work! Do you want to get fired and end up a bum like your cousin Morty? Morty... I don t have a cousin named Morty! I fired back with some agitation. Don t talk back to me, young man! And I would appreciate it if you did not take that tone with me, either! Is this any way to talk to a mother? And after all I do for you! I m sorry. I don t know what got into me. I m very sorry. That s better. Much better. Sit up straight! Very good. Now head right for work, and don t stop for any of those Rondy Lord Trapper visits and is caught enjoying Kurt Rein s 1926 Packard. expensive latte things you re always wasting your savings on.
