Scott had just picked up the RR beauty after extensive repairs, and would soon drive it back to Alaska. (Story to follow in future TT issue.) At right, the same car is seen at the Memorial Day Show at Northway Mall in Anchorage on Monday, May 28th, after making the trip up the Alaska Highway. by Jim Fredenhagen Each Memorial Day, the Corvette Club hosts a car show and invites all the local clubs. It s held at the Northway Mall, and this year, the weather was sunny. A large group of visitors filtered through the area all day. At mid afternoon, a Color Guard presented the US and Alaska flags and there was a brief silence to honor those fallen in service. AAMA members in attendance were Rich Golding (1928 Model A Fordor) Jim Fredenhagen (1929 Model A Ford Tudor) Carl Godsoe (1931 Model A Ford PU) and Scott Hulse A Reminder: State-of-the-Art of Antique Cars You never know what humor lurks in the recesses of your glove compartment. Other famliar characters, who made themselves conspicuous by virtue of their beautiful rides were: Ken Holland (1929 Ford Coupe), Lee Truesdell (1930 Ford Sedan), Bob Bartlett (1931 Ford PU). June Meeting Our June 13th meeting will begin at DayBreak Center at 6:30 PM and then hit the road for a driveabout after adjournment. Come join in the frivolity and foolishness. Last month s cruise was planned by Brian Anderson. We ended up at the Dairy Queen on Strawberry and Jewel Lake Road after driving through beautiful Kincaid Park. Thanks, Brian. This time, we ll see what devious devices Donn Reese will have.

4 4 Tinkering Times June 6, 2018 Our Summer Driveabouts Our summer driveabouts have begun, and as of this writing we have had at least three: after the May meeting, then Wednesdays, May 16 th and 23 rd. This event makes for an inauspicious moment of showing off our rides and for eating out. The eating part is something our group never can pass up. Join us for a good gab and a chance to wave at the tourists. We don t get nearly enough chance to see Pam Tanora s beautiful 1931 Chevrolet sedan. But suddenly, at our May meeting, there it was. Thanks for bringing it, Pam! The May 16th driveabout included Golding s Model A, Anderson s Jeep, s Chrysler and Fredenhagen s Model A. We ended up at Hacienda Restaurant on Debar. 7 June 6, 2018 You ve Got to Give the Car Credit! Humor by Rich Golding This whole mess started out, quite innocently, as what seemed (at the time) as a josh. A practical joke. An amusement. The lady in reservations on the other side of the telephone line was taking my information for an upcoming Antique Auto Musher s long distance tour. She sounded busy. While she was quizzing me for my particulars, I could hear her asking the same of someone else, probably present in her hotel lobby. I guess I was getting a little annoyed at having to participate in two conversations at the same time. So you re coming down with the antique cars? she asked me. That s right, I ll be driving in my Model A. One moment please, she responded, followed by the sound of muffled speech, as she conversed with her other customer, then back again to me. Oh that sounds like fun, driving an old car that far, followed by more muffled speech directed towards her other party. My eyes were rolling, and I began rhythmically tapping my fingers on the countertop. Then she returned to me. Uh, sorry, a Model A, huh? More muted banter, then back to me. What s the name, please? Here s my chance to have some fun, I figure. Arthur, I blurt, responding with my car s name, because, after all, that was the answer to her question, wasn t it? And the last name is Golding? Uh... that s right... but... Annoyingly she switched to her alternate conversation, then back to Tinkering Times 7 me. Well Arthur, we look forward to seeing you next week. If that s all, it s rather busy here today, so I ll say good-bye, her voice trailed off, then disconnected, before I could respond. Honestly, I didn t think much of it at the time. Two weeks later I arrived at the hotel. The drive in Arthur was quite a long one, and I was weary, and looking forward to freshening up a bit in my room. You must be Mr. Golding, queried the lady at the front desk. I recognized her voice from or earlier First Adopt-A-Road Cleanup The July 1993 issue of the Tinkering Times announced that AAMA would begin a new commitment: the Adopt-A-Road cleanup of east Northern Lights from Muldoon to Boniface. So this is the 26 th year of the task that was the brainchild of the late AAMA member, Lorraine Foster. The program requires that groups do the job three times per season, so we hit the road in May, July and September. It has become a tradition that the leader of the event provides a tailgate phone conversation. Guilty as charged, I joked. Her countenance remained unaffected by my hilarious ad-lib. Though her lips remained closed, one corner of her mouth seemed to strain out a half smile. Your room is all ready. If you would just sign, she requested apathetically, passing a reservation card over the counter to me, along with a pen that had the hotel logo and address printed on it s barrel. While she took a phone call (See p. 8, You ve Got to... ) continental breakfast. This year, and for a number of years, that person has been Marcy, and the regulars have learned that the breakfast goodies make the effort worthwhile. On our May 5 th event this year, we experienced a little more trash than we found in previous years presumably because of a recent windstorm. But the day was clear and cool. It was a perfect day to be out in the fresh air, doing some exercise and making the community look a bit cleaner. The Adopt-A-Road crew for May 5: Tom, Tamea and Art Isham, Brian Anderson, Marcy, Michael Campbell, Karen Avila Lederhos, Colleen Kimzey, Dave Syren, Ted Kimzey, Mark Graber, Howard Hansen, Jim Jacobson, Sara Stoops, Terri Young, Dennis Allen and Dick Henningsen.

8 8 Tinkering Times June 6, 2018 You ve Got to Give the Car Credit (Continued from p. 7) regarding a reservation, I scanned the card s content. It had my address and phone number correctly printed on it, and the arrival and departure dates were accurate. But I couldn t help but notice that the guest name listed on it was incorrect. It said Arthur Golding. Uh... I think you have the wrong... She waved at me, all the while talking on the phone to her other customer then pointed at the signature line on the card. Just sign there, please, she uttered over her other conversation. Quite annoying. So I signed the card Arthur Golding and popped the pen into my shirt s breast pocket. A month or so later, wandering down my driveway to the mailbox, then returning back to the house whilst thumbing through the usual pile of bills and solicitations, I stopped short. A small grin began to develop on one corner of my mouth. In my hand was a letter from Kansas addressed to Arthur Golding. Entering the house through the garage, I showed the letter to Arthur, but he seemed unimpressed. Once in the kitchen, I looked around for a letter opener, finding only a pen to do the job. I think I felt a little bit guilty, as one might, opening someone else s mail. As the pen slashed through the top of the envelope, I believe I made out a familiar hotel logo and address on it. Congratulations, Arthur Golding, read the top of the enclosed letter. Because of your excellent credit, you have been chosen to receive the new Bank of East Wichita Visa Gold card. Unfolding the rest of the letter a plastic credit card fell out and onto the floor. I instinctively responded by looking around to see if anyone else had witnessed my possibly illegal indiscretion. But there was no one else home. I was in the house all alone. I stuffed the shiny golden At left, Gary Klecka s 1930 Model A taxi basks in the sun among a dozen other Model A s, and Karen Avila-Lederhos 1966 Mustang stands out in contrast the only non-model A in the Garcia s Run Group. credit card and the letter back into the envelope, and put it into the top drawer of the desk. All the way in the back of the drawer. That episode might well have been forgotten, if it weren t for the surprise awaiting in my mailbox a few days later. Amongst the normal junk mail were two more letters addressed to Arthur. One contained a platinum MasterCard with triple airline miles, and the other an American Express card with a $25,000 credit limit. I stuffed them all the way back into the desk drawer and made myself a cup of tea, then sat down at the table. I fully expected a knock at the front door any minute. In my mind s eye I could envision my answering that knock, opening the door, being apprehended, handcuffed, then dragged and tossed into a paddy wagon, never to be seen or heard from again. But the knock never came. Three cups of tea later and still no knock. A week later Arthur received an invitation to an investment seminar at the Hilton that promised a free cruise to the Bahamas. I ve always wanted to see the Bahamas. So when the day came, I packed up all his credit cards and (See p. 9, You ve Got to... ) Garcia s Run Saturday, May 5 th, twelve Model A s and a very nice 1966 Mustang met at Garcia s in Eagle River for lunch and a cruise. The weather was beautiful, and after lunch a cruise took most of the cars for a photo op at River s Edge art store and the iconic Noah s Ark, treasured possession of long-time Chugiak resident, the late Til Wallace. After many photos, the group proceeded to Art and Tamea Isham s house for a potluck dessert. Thanks go to Jim Fredenhagen, the Ishams and everyone who brought the really delicious desserts.

9 June 6, 2018 Tinkering Times 9 The day of Garcia s Run, eight Model A s gather with Noah s Ark: Gary Klecka s 1930 Taxi, unknown, Louie Finch s 1929 Coupe, Carl Godsoe s 1931 Pickup, John Tichenor s 1931 Pickup, Jim Fredenhagen s 1929 Tudor, Rich Golding s 1928 Town Sedan, Tom s 1931 Slant Window Sedan. (Continued from p. 8) correspondence and climbed into my parvenu Model A. When we pulled into the Hilton s driveway, their doorman appeared quite dumbfounded to see the ninety year old Ford. We re here for the Gonif and Sons Investment Seminar, I yelled out my driver s window. The fellow looked at, around and into the car. We? he responded quizzically. Well, do you have an invitation? What s the name? Richard Golding. I rolled down the window a bit more and handed him the invite. Hmmm, let me see that, he said, checking it against his printed guest list. I don t see a RICHARD Golding. But there is an ARTHUR Golding listed. That s the car. Wha? The car s name is Arthur. He has excellent credit, I exclaimed, and pulled Arthur s credit cards out of my You ve Got to Give the Car Credit pocket to show him. Although he did have a little trouble starting up this morning, I had to open the hood and adjust the... Is this some kind of a joke? he interrupted, rather stern faced, though I swear one corner of his mouth was turning up in a half smile. No joke. We re here for the free Bahamas trip. Look... I said, unzipping my jacket and revealing my flowery island shirt with toucans embroidered on it. There s matching swim trunks and a beach towel, too. The guy stood there stunned and speechless. Then he reached into his pocket and pulling out a walkie talkie, he turned around with his back facing me. I could faintly make out his request for assistance, over the clatter of Arthur s idling engine. Is there valet parking? I inquired aloud as I climbed out of the driver s seat. Just then two men in uniforms appeared and grabbing me from behind, pushed me up against the car. We re going to have to confiscate the credit cards, Sir. Well okay, I responded a bit exasperated, but what about that trip to the Bahamas? Three weeks later and the dust has finally begun to settle regarding this misunderstanding. Arthur is resting safe and sound in his garage. I m afraid all his charge cards were taken away and his credit line dissolved. The people at Visa, MasterCard and American Express each seemed too embarrassed at their company s actions to prosecute. So you see, all s well that ends well! Unfortunately, the store refused to take back the flowery island shirt, citing as their excuse a grease stain that must have gotten onto it when I was leaning under Arthur s hood, getting the engine to start that day. But not to worry I figure, since I had paid for it with one of Arthur s credit cards.
