Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska Volume 57, Number 9 Historic Jay Ofsthun Show Basks in Sunshine The 2017 Jay Ofsthun Car show hosted many beautiful vehicles, but in the end, two came away with the trophies. At left is Tim Kukowski, who won the Mr. Ed s Pick with his 1950 Olsmobile and at right is Bill Fields, who took the Jay Ofsthun trophy with his 1931 Franklin. Congratulations to both winners for their beauties! The annual Jay Ofsthun Memorial Show and Shine is always held the first Sunday in August. The first show took place in 1979, cofounded by Midnight Sun president, Ed Park, and Antique Auto Musher president, Jay Ofsthun. Jay later died in a small plane crash, and the show was named in his honor. This year s show took place on a beautiful, warm and sunny day blessed with a slight breeze that came in off Cook Inlet. Attendance broke records, with over 500 cars on display. Antiques, hot rods, low riders, customs, British sports cars, project cars and even new cars were there in all their varied glory. It would be impossible to estimate the number of guests who came to ogle the vehicles, but the Park Strip was crowded. At the AAMA shelter, we had chairs, where we could rest when we weren t up and about enjoying the collection of iron, fiberglass, rubber and shiny paint. Dennis Allen prepared hot dogs, and many brought potluck dishes, so we didn t go hungry. As usual, there were some awards. Mr. Ed s Pick award, named for Ed Park, co-founder and president emeritus of the Midnight Sun Street Rod Association, went to a gorgeous 1950 Oldsmobile custom owned by Tim Kukowski. The coveted Jay Ofsthun award, which is sponsored by the Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska, went to Bill Fields, for his 1931 Franklin. In Notice: Dimond Mall Car Show September 9 9:00 AM-4:00 PM. Dimond Mall car show, East side parking area of Dimond Center. $25 door prizes. (Jim Fredenhagen, ) addition, AAMA member, Karen Lederhos won a raffle prize. Many of the cars lingered to the very close of the show. It seemed that people just wanted to continue enjoying. A big thank-you goes to the Midnight Sun Street Rod Association, as well as the 49th State Street Rod Association, both of whom were instrumental in getting sponsors, advertising, setting up the field, handing out show packets, providing the sound system and choreographing the awards. September Meeting After our regular meeting of September 13 at Daybreak, we'll make a short road trip, led by David and Carol Jensen, to the 907 Alehouse and Grill (8001 Old Seward Highway). This was formerly known as Tilted Kilt. There, David and Carol will present a slide show/video and discussion highlighting their recent travels to Reno, Nevada for the 31st Annual Hot August Nights. Their tour included many parades, live car auction, antique trailer show, Big Boys Toys convention and much more. They'll also give away some door prizes. 907 Alehouse has graciously set aside a beautiful area for us to eat, visit and enjoy the video on a large movie screen. Dinner and beverages are nohost. This promises to be a fun night out. See you there!

2 Running Board Reflections 2017 Officers President: Gwyn Vice President: David Jensen Secretary: Scott Hulse Treasurer: Milt Tanora Sergeant at Arms: Dutch Overly Members at Large On August 2, 2015, president Gwyn was basking in the glory of the sun at the Jay Ofsthun Show. The reason for that smug look on her face? She was enjoying the beautiful sun in Anchorage with her treasure, a beautiful 1956 Ford Thunderbird. Can you blame her? Wow, is this summer ever passing fast! There was certainly no shortage of events to participate in during August. Things start to settle down quite a bit this month, but we do have one of our favorite events in Denali coming up in a few weeks. It is always an adventure to remember. Our final car show of the year is also coming up on September 9 at the Dimond Mall parking lot. One last chance to show off our beauties! I want to take a moment to send out a big heartfelt thanks to all of you that helped organize the many wonderful events that we had this summer. Without you, none of these fun trips and shows would be possible. Our club is full of generous people that give so much of their time to make us the great club that we are, and you are so appreciated. Thank you all so much!! See you at the September meeting! Gwyn Adopt-A-Road The AAMA clean-up group showed up before the appointed time of 9:00 AM at Carr s Muldoon store on September 2nd. Milt Tanora helped with the tailgate breakfast by bringing some of his signature smoked salmon dip, crackers, doughnut holes and black grapes. Marcy offered up hard-boiled eggs, zucchini bread, cinnamon bread, bananas, juice and coffee. Not quite a gourmet event, but satiating. We had a light turnout, only six helpers, but we managed to get the road clean as a whistle in time to leave by 11:00 AM. Thanks, everyone who showed up. 4 Palmer Alaska State Fair Parade and Show by Mark Graber Nice weather prevailed again this year for the Palmer Alaska State Fair. Seems like our position near the front of the parade has become tradition and we proceeded at a steady pace through the parade route. The parade ended at the Palmer Veterans and Pioneers Home, and then we headed to the fairgrounds. Again this year, our show was near the Woodlot show (a logger s sporting event) and probably owing a lot to Dennis signs announcing our show we had a steady stream of visitors, mainly from the exiting woodlot audience. Dennis and Diane supplied a folding shelter, and a table, and we all brought chairs. We ate fair food as well as some of the goodies we brought (including a delicious coffee cake and cookies supplied by Susan Garrett). We had a good variety of cars: Oldest car was Tom and Marcy Cresaps 1938 Chrysler. Mark Graber and Susan Garrett brought their 1947 Packard, Dennis and Diane Allen drove their 1965 Thunderbird, Scott and Sheryl Hulse drove their 1958 Rolls Royce, Fred Sharper drove his 1971 GMC Pickup, These are five of six vehicles displayed at the Palmer Alaska State Fair. The sixth, Fred Scharper s 1971 GMC pickup is not shown, because Fred had to leave to do an errand. Clockwise from the top, they are: 1947 Packard, 1965 Thunderbird, 1938 Chrysler, 1966 Mustang and 1958 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. AAMA s six vehicles that attended the Palmer Alaska State Fair parked near the woodlot, which hosted logging competition. Cars present were: Mark Graber s 1947 Packard, Fred Sharper s 1971 GMC pickup, Dennis and Diane Allen s 1965 Thunderbird, Scott an Sheryl Hulse s 1958 Rolls Royce, Art and Tam Isham s Mustang and Tom and Marcy Cresap s 1938 Chrysler. (All photos by Tom Cresap) and Art and Tam Isham sported their beautiful, newly-restored 1966 Mustang convertible. We shared stories with the visitors, who showed a lot of interest, love and respect for our treasures. Thanks to all for attending.

5 Palmer Hot Summer Nights Proves To Be a Wet Day Karen and Don Lederhos stand in the rain with their beautiful 1966 Ford Mustang during the Palmer Hot Summer Nights show in Palmer on August 12. There was enough rain to stop a significant number of enthusiasts from attending, but the intrepid Lederhoses and the Hulses didn t shy away. Although it had been quite rainy, Reports showed weather improving for the August 12 th Palmer Summer Nights Show; and John Troutner, of the 49 th State Street Rodders, Hulse reported they were moving ahead with the show rain or shine in true Alaska fashion. (We sourdoughs are famous for claiming that if we wait on the weather, we ll never get anything done.) The forecast was for more rain that night. It turned out the high temperature was 57, and more than a half inch of rain fell during the day. Consequently, the turnout wasn t great, but two AAMA members ventured and walked away with trophies. Congratulations Karen and Don Lederhos and Sheryl and Scott Hulse. Karen and Don won the Best Classic Car award with their 1966 Mustang (which could have won even in a crowded venue) and Sheryl and Scott Hulse won the Best Custom Car award with their beautiful 1958 Rolls Royce. Scott says, It pays to attend, and we might add that for shows like that it also might pay to be displaying an Amphicar. Most kidding aside, we offer sincere kudos to the intrepid Hulses and Lederhoses. Scott Hulse shot this photo from beneath his umbrella. It characterizes the rainy and sparse state of affairs at the Hot Summer Nights show. Hulse

6 Sterling Run Provides Proves Relaxing and Dry Fredenhagen Fredenhagen The upper photo shows Model A s parked in front of Summit Lake Lodge, where the group had dinner on the return from Sterling. Lower photo shows Bill Eckhart s amazingly beautiful shop in Sterling. (Photos by Jim Fredenhagen) The Day I Grew Old Humor by Rich Golding After returning from our most recent vacation, and upon entering the front door of our home and walking into the kitchen, Linda and I were greeted with two huge piles of unanswered mail received over the past two weeks, generously collected and left on the kitchen table by one of our children. Almost an hour later, working together (or as well as any two people who have been together for 41 years can work together) we managed to sort through all the bills, a d v e r t i s e m e n t s, f a m i l y correspondence, birthday cards (the parrot had her 21st birthday), flyers by Jim Fredenhagen Faith. Pure faith was what it took to launch our 7 Model A s from the Carrs Huffman Mall on Aug 19. The weather forecast had shown a window of good weather for our daylong run to Suzie s Cafe in Sterling, but after several previous days of rain it took faith to believe there would actually be good weather that day. We were happily surprised to chug all the way to Sterling and back without rain except for a little shower in Sterling. At Suzie s we were met by three other A s from the Sterling area, John Piper (1930 Tudor) Paul Reger (1930 Huckster), Jim Fena (1930 Tudor). After a very hearty lunch we toured down the Scout Lake road to Jim Fena s place on the Kenai River where Shirley had made four flavors of pie for us to have for dessert. They were absolutely wonderful. and junk mail, and arranged them into individual, neat and orderly stacks. There was but one letter that remained uncategorized. It was addressed to me. The return address indicated that it was from the federal government. I knew it was truly from our government, and not some snake oil offer disguised as being from the government, because they had addressed it to me using my full middle name. In all honesty, I have never liked that name. I have taken great pains to hide it, to eradicate it from the eyes and ears of all civilized society. No one knows my middle name, at least no one that is still alive to repeat it. My mother and father, gone these many years, were the last to possess that secret. Actually, Linda knows it, but we reached an understanding some four decades ago that if she tells no one my middle Next, Jim s neighbor, Bill Eckhart (1931 Roadster) invited us to tour his car collection. Amazing is an understatement for his beautiful shop and cars. Bill was very gracious to also show us around his estate on the Kenai River. The drive back was uneventful, and some of us stopped at Summit Lake lodge for dinner and some came home nonstop. Ironically, about an hour after returning, the rain started and continued all night. What luck! Participants included Jim Fredenhagen (1929 Tudor) Godsoes (1931 Pickup) Rich Golding (1928 Fordor), Dave Burkhart (1930 Tudor), Kimzeys (1931 Tudor), Packers (1931 Pickup), John Tichenor (1931 Pickup), Nat Gardner (1956 Pickup), Mike Weidmer (1941 Cadillac), Drydens (modern), Louis Finch & Amy Cartwright (modern). name, I will do likewise in protecting hers. But I digress. Hmmm, whad ya suppose Uncle Sam wants of me? I queried out loud, letter in hand. Why don t you just open it up and find out? came the matronly response from my better half, seated on the other side of the table. I am usually not a timid man. I view myself as modestly rugged, selfassured, a generally fearless fellow, and an excellent dancer. Not easily intimidated, I have been known to laugh in the face of danger. But if you, gentle reader, resemble any of these macho attributes, then perhaps you also share a curious phobia for the opening of mail addressed from the federal government. (See p. 7, The Day I Grew Old )

(Continued from p. 6) If you re scared, I can open it for you, taunts my wife. Scared... scared? Why, there hasn t been a Golding born that knows the meaning of the word! Keep still woman, I am merely contemplating the letter s possible contents. I carefully scrutinize the envelope, whist rolling it between my fingertips, examining it for any possible incendiary or explosive contents. Here already, give me that, she commands as she swipes with sharpened claws from across the tabletop at the space between us. Quickly, masterfully and ever so deftly I withdraw my hand and the envelope it holds, at the very last split-second, retaining both for myself (admittedly, a skill I have honed to a science over these past four decades). I run my thumb along and under the flap on the rear of the envelope, flipping it open and removing the single page it contains. My countenance takes on a blank, pale stare as I read, re-read and re-re-read the letter. Well? commands Linda, What does it say? Are you going to tell me already? The letter slips from my hands onto the table, as I stare blankly into space, trancelike. She snatches it up and reads it for herself. Hey, this must be serious, they ve got your middle name on it but her levity is cut short as my spouse s eyes scan the body of the letter. Her face grows as white as mine. Oh my God, Oh my God! she shrieks, then puts the paper down onto the table. It s okay, it s okay, she murmurs softly, as she holds my 7 The Day I Grew Old hand in hers. We knew this day would come sooner for later. That s easy for you to say, you ve still got a few years left before you... become... become truly... old. Getting up from the table, I drag myself over to a drawer and withdrawing a pair of scissors, return to the table. I clip off the red, white and blue ID attached to the bottom of the letter. Slipping through my trembling fingers, the Medicare card flutters onto the floor. I bend over to pick it up, and in so doing, experience age related lower back pains that I recollect never having felt before. I stuff the ominous paper credential into my wallet, and shove that deep within my pocket. Hidden, concealed, secluded from sight. I am officially an old person now, I whisper under my breath. Linda gets up from her chair and quietly walks around to my side of the table. She grabs my shoulders as I slump down deep into my chair, consumed in my own self pity. It s alright, it s alright, she keeps repeating softly into my ear. Really, it s not that bad. You ve got to look at it from the proper perspective. Really, it can be a good thing. I straighten up in my chair and look into her soft, caring eyes and ask, you really think so? Of course it is! This is a testament to your... your... your, she pauses while summoning up the proper words, your maturity! Really? I respond, as the color returns to my face. Absolutely! You ve weathered the storm that sweeps so many others away and emerged stronger and wiser! Yah...yah, I guess I have! And you re entering your golden years, not on your knees, but proudly, with your shoulders held... Broad... I dictate out loud. Yes, she continues corrected, your broad shoulders held high! Her pep talk continues on for almost an hour, as her genteel rhetoric is served with soothing and consoling metaphors, affectionate hand squeezes, as well as several ounces of alcohol. I am feeling noticeably better. Her empathy has made an enormous difference. I can see now that this isn t the end of my life, but rather a beginning. The beginning of a new chapter, I proclaim aloud. My angel, my all, smiles then circles to my rear to rub my shoulders, my broad shoulders. Just think, she coos from behind me into my ear, with that Medicare card you can get discounts into movies and restaurants and hotels, airlines and all kind of places. I don t think so, I respond shaking my head pertinaciously. It s not charity, Honey! It s a legitimate honor bestowed upon you for your many years of contributing to our society! Nah, I don t think so... But why not? You ve worked all your life for this. You deserve these privileges! All you have to do is to show them the card No, I... I m not gonna do that! I don t wanna do that! Why not, Sweetheart? she asks innocently. Because, I answer truthfully, it has my middle name on it!
