1 !"#$%&'(!&#)(*&+,'-+ ).(!/0+10 Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska Volume 53, Number 8 Never Ending Summer?!"#$%&"#'(!")%* Honorable Editor,...products of prodigious proliferation caused by the propagating progenitors. Preposterous! Praise to thee for the plethora and preponderance of pithy phrases. Prithee, predict propensity for precipitation in Skagway on July 2 nd. Robbie by Tamea Isham This year s Long Distance Tour began on June 28. We left the Fred Meyer in Eagle River in the morning and we had overcast, cloudy and chilly weather and lots of smoke on the horizon from the Fairbanks and Tok fires. Some light rain fell on that day, but that was the extent of our imperfect weather. As we headed to Tok, it was chilly, cool and buggy. But we were prepared and survived. The Chaces from Fairbanks met us in Tok that evening, and we all went on together from there. The tour group consisted of the Hey, Just Joking, But Get Your Sunscreen Out! Jay Ofsthun Show presents surprises The August 4, 2013 Jay Ofsthun Show and Shine took place, as it often does, under cloudy skies. We all had a great time visiting with old friends and making some new ones. The Antique Auto Mushers were represented by a record 38 cars, about one tenth of the overall retinue. Ken Holland, left, receives Jerry s Choice award from MSSRA s Lenny Olson. Ralph Centoni, left, received the Jay Ofsthun award from Ray Eleven. During a brief stop in Whitehorse on the 2013 Long Distance Tour, some of the participating AAMA vehicles parked for a photo with the stearnwheeler, Klonkike. Although our members are not ones to covet trophies, we won t turn em down. So it was a pleasant but unexpected surprise when the two major awards of the show were bestowed upon AAMA people. The first of these was the Jerry s Pick plaque given in honor of past MSSRA member and president, Jerry Park. This award honors a vehicle that the MSSRA representatives feel would be Jerry s choice. This year, the trophy went to Ken Holland for his legendary 1929 Model A. The second trophy, the Jay Ofsthun Award, is presented in memory of the late Jay Ofsthun, who was a member of both the Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska and the Midnight Sun Street (See p. 4, Jay Ofsthun Show) Brian Anderson family, Campbells (1959 Skyliner) Cresaps (1938 Chrysler) Hansens (1966 Plymouth Barracuda) Ishams (1963 Imperial) Kimzeys (1931 Model A) Kurt Rein(1966 Mustang) Sonens (1931 Model A pickup) Chaces (1952 Plymouth) and Buzz Wallace (1930 Model A coupe.) We also had guests: Joanna Cooper and Debra Woodard, from Oklahoma, who rode with Cresaps; Myron VanSickle, from Maryland, who rode with Kurt Rein and Robbie Robinson, who went with Ishams. (See p.4 Long Distance) August Meeting Our meeting will convene at 6:30 p.m. August 14, at Robbie and Marianne Robinson s clubhouse. This will be a rolling meeting, so afterwords a cruise will be orchestrated by Donn Reese. Many thanks to president Mike, who put together the long-winded cruise last meeting. Cresaps made it through the entire itinerary only to find the group half-way finished with their meal at Seward s Folly.

2 2 Tinkering Times Running Board Reflections President Mike gave his 1927 Hupmobile a shake down run to Hope during our annual event there. He was accompanied by First Lady Gwyn, and his second cousin from Switzerland, Lea. The Hup had to piggy-back to Anchorage due to some minor gasket problems. Sunscreen and stamina: two key ingredients to thrive in Alaska s 2013 car tour and show season. This year s record-breaking heat and sun has been a convertible owner s dream, and the wise among us have been lathering on the SP-30. July blew by, starting with three July 4 th parades: Anchorage, Chugiak, and Haines. I am proud that our club simultaneously put on great shows in parades 800 miles apart; a sign of an enthusiastic and robust organization. Please join me in thanking Tam Isham for sheparding again the Long-Distance Tour, about which more is written elsewhere in this issue. Once again, our Hope weekend, ably chaired by Dennis and Diane Allen, was a blast, and if you didn t get enough to eat, you have no one to blame. Howard Hansen brought glory to the AAMA by winning his class in the 5-K footrace. A few of us toured up the Palmer Creek Road, and the views were fantastic. When you have a chance you should drive up this well-maintained and lightly traveled route. Rain threatened the annual Show & Shine car show yesterday, but I am happy to report that AAMA ers were not deterred. By my count, on Sunday we displayed nearly 40 of our cars on the Park Strip not only did we present a large number of cars, we supplied quality too, as Ralph Centoni s incomparable 1931 V-12 Cadillac closed-couple sedan deservedly won Best in Show. Congratulations Ralph! Events remain in high gear through August. Palmer s Hot August Nights are next weekend, and the State Fair Parade and show are August 24 th. Until next time, I hope you have time to enjoy some of these events and, most importantly, get out and enjoy your Alaska summer. Mike D.Reese Robbie Robinson and president Mike hobnob about Hupmobiles at Hope Weekend. D.Reese Neil Knoll, Bruce Campbell, Ralph Centoni and President Mike make up a group of gear-grinding gurus with the J.O. trophy at the 2013 Jay Ofsthun Show and Shine. 4 4 Tinkering Times Long Distance (Continued from p. 1) We arrived in Atlin early evening on June 30 and joined the town for their Canada Day parade the morning of July 1. In the afternoon that day, we drove to Skagway to spend more than a day touring the sights before boarding the ferry to Haines the afternoon of July 3. In Haines we participated in the 4 th of July parade, had a car show for the town folk in the afternoon and had a group dinner that evening. We left Haines the morning of July 5 and headed to Beaver Creek. After Beaver Creek most of us stayed overnight in Glennallen and headed home the next day. All in all, it was a wonderful tenday tour. We drove over 1700 miles. The weather was perfect. We only had minor problems along the way, like two flat tires, a locked up transmission and a broken fan blade. Those situations were taken care of in a matter of hours, and we were good to go. Editor s note: we want to thank Tamea Isham for her impeccable planning leading up to this trip. Everything worked out perfectly. (Did you even plan the wonderful weather, Tam?) Jay Ofsthun Show Brings Recognition (Continued from p. 1) Rod Association before dying in a plane crash with his family in the eighties. This coveted award, cosponsored by AAMA and MSSRA, consists of a traveling trophy designed by late AAMA member, Loyal Hahn, and a personalized plaque presented to the recipient. This year, it was presented to AAMA member, Ralph Centoni, in recognition of his beautiful 1931 Cadillac Model 370 A. 5 Tinkering Times 5 Hope, Alaska Is The Place to Invade by Dennis Allen On Saturday, 20 July, the Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska invaded Main Street in Hope Alaska with the largest parade of old cars yet seen in this historic mining community on the Southern shore of Turnagain Arm. Participating in the first parade of the day on Saturday were: Cresap s 38 Chrysler Royal; Allen s 34 Ford; Heningsen s 56 Ford Crown Victoria; Hansen s 77 VW Convertible; Nolta/ Reese s 60 Imperial; Wiedmer s 41 Cadillac Coupe with Hulse driving; Wiedmer s 27 Hupmobile; Dryden s 31 Ford A Taxi; Yate s 30 Ford A Tudor Fredenhagan driving; Godsoe s 31 Ford A Pickup; Golding s 28 Ford A Sedan. When we arrived at Hope on Thursday afternoon Dick, Barb, Kim, and David Henningsen were there with their motorhome. Shortly after we got our motorhome set up, Tom & Marcy Cresap arrived. After some time visiting, hauling stuff into the Retreat, and a couple of Parades we had a shared meal in the Retreat. Donn Reese, David Nolta, and William arrived with their motorhome followed by Robbie and Marianne Robinson. Our late night travelers, Scott & Cindy Hulse, Gwyn & Mike Wiedmer, and Lea, Mike s cousin s daughter from Switzerland, arrived after 11:00 pm. On Friday Howard & Barb arrived, and not too long afterward we had a parade through Hope and the Porcupine campground with a stop at Davidson s store. Visits to the Hope library bookstore and giftshop, raffle ticket selling, and more visiting filled the day. We had many out of state visitors stop to see our cars and much time was spent in discussion of Just like the car my dad had or some version Eleven cars and sundry other vehicles invaded Hope during AAMA s annual Wagon Trail Days Weekend: 1963 Imperial (Reese-Nolte) 1941 Cadillac (Scott Hulse) 1956 Ford Crown Victoria (Henningsen) 1934 Ford (Allen) 1931 Model A Taxi (Dryden) 1928 Model A (Golding) 1931 Model A pickup (Godsoe) 1929 Model A (Fredenhagen) 1927 Hupmobile (Wiedmer) 1938 Chrysler (Cresap) 1977 Volswagen convertible (Hansen). of that! Dinner was at Tito s Discovery Cafe. On Saturday after a pancake breakfast at the Hope Social Hall our ranks were swelled by a daytime visit by the AAMA Model A Fords and after our parade much time was devoted to positioning the cars for a group photo. I can t believe the effort required to get all those cars lined up but Tom managed to get it done! Saturday evening we had our hot dog hamburger feed potluck. Sunday was the AAMA breakfast potluck with Dennis s buttermilk pancakes, Donn s sausage/cheese balls and Marcy s omelet casserole (yumyum, Good!) After breakfast the annual 5K Wagon Trail Race took place with the AAMA cheering section lending an air of festivities and encouragement to the racers. After the race, awards were given and the raffle drawing took place. Our very own Dodge Guru, perpetual Treasurer, and Past President, Howard Hanson, won 1st place in his age group and there were several racers in the group! In the raffle, Allens won an artistic map of Hope and Barb Henningsen won a $25 gift certificate to the Winter Cafe. Thank you to all who bought raffle tickets. Of the 200 Diane had to sell, 180 were bought by club members and the other 20 were sold to two out-of-state visitors who stopped to look at the cars. After eating left over hot-dogs, hamburgers, and potluck we had another parade and a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Many of us waited until Monday morning to depart for Home to avoid weekend traffic on the Seward Highway. Submitted by Dennis Allen. 6 6 Tinkering Times Minutes for the July 10, 2013 Meeting The meeting was called to order by President Mike Wiedmer at 6:33 p.m. The meeting was held at Robbie and Marianne's home at 3318 Jerde Circle, Anchorage Alaska. There were 37 members present. The minutes were read from the June meeting. The minutes were recorded by Marcy Cresap for the June meeting. The minutes were accepted as read. The treasurer's report was read; the CD matured at $10, and has now been closed. Those funds are in the checking account, which is at $13, The invoice for the step repairs has not been received yet. Tonight's visitors were Harley and Roxie Sidebottom. Roxie visited the show at Summer Solstice and is very interested in pre-1970 automobiles. Gwen introduced her guest, Rick, he has attended meeting in the past. Welcome to our visitors. Sara, Sergeant at Arms, check for member nametags. Old Business: Mike reported that he has created a plaque to be presented to Bob's Services for the use of their facility during Fur Rondy. Dick Henningsen reported on the JBER show, two cars representing our club were present. There were about 80 total cars for the car show, mostly hotrods. Tom Cresap reported on the Joint Meet to Healy. The event presented great weather and lots of bugs. Part of the meet was to visit the Usibelli Mine and the car games were great fun. Fairbanks financed an expensive dinner for the group. Covered wagons, drawn by horses, were used to transport folks to the Black Diamond Ranch for dinner. Forty-nine people attended. Diane Allen reported on Serendipity with eight cars to transport folks, and Daybreak with six cars available. There may be some further plans to drive for the Pioneer Home in Palmer. August could be the first time to visit the Palmer Pioneer Home. Jim Fredenhagen reported on the Mirror Lake event. Lots of bugs, good crowds, and great food were enjoyed by all. Rather rainy day. Summer Solstice Show was reviewed by Donn Reese. There was a muni- personnel car parked with the club cars, we watched over his Challenger. Nice day, lots of crowds interested in our vehicles. There were several seagulls in the same area we parked, not good company for our cars. It was busy all day. Scott made a motion and Marcy seconded it to reimburse Mike for the $60 entrance fee for the Summer Solstice event. Jim Fredenhagen reported on the Anchorage 4th of July parade. Three members had expressed an interest in the parade but 17 cars showed up. Long Distance Tour was reported by Art Isham. They participated in two parades, July 1 in Canada and July 4 in Haines. Sounds like everyone had a great time. Several flat tires but no major breakdowns were experienced. Nine cars, in nine days totaling 25 people participated. Our club took a third place in the Haines parade. Robbie pointed out that Walt and Sachiko Sonen came all the way from Seldovia for the long distance meet and for the meeting tonight. Buzz Wallace from Homer was also along for the long distance meet. He said we had some "pretty gritty folks in our club." Joanna Cooper and her daughter also attended. Joanna is the Antique Automobile National Director of the Western Region. (now ex-director, recently resigned) The Chugiak Parade was reviewed by Dennis Allen. Lots of candy was distributed. They were the only car from the club to participate. Mike wanted to point out that we have a fine website. Split the pot was won by Dennis Allen. New Business: The Bear Paw Festival in Eagle River is scheduled for this next weekend. The car show is Friday evening; start getting into place about 4:00 p.m. The parade is Saturday; set up is about 9:00am. Must register before participating in the parade. Ken Stout was a member -at-large. His position needs to be filled. Kurt Rein volunteered for the position. There were no other nominations from the floor. It was motioned and seconded to assign Kurt as member-at-large, the motion was approved. Dennis Allen reported on Hope Weekend. The dates are Thursday evening, July 18 through Monday, July 22. There is room in the Methodist Retreat House to throw down a sleeping bag. There are shower facilities in the house as well. Dennis wanted a count for pancakes as he contributes those to the Sunday morning breakfast. Check the Tinkering Times for further details. Saturday, July 13 is a highway cleanup. Lead by the Cresap's. Meet at Carr's, at Northern Lights and Muldoon, at 9:00 am. The Cresap's are also leading the September 7 highway cleanup. The Show and Shine is scheduled for August 4, on the Park Strip. Previously our club members have arrived early to stuff bags and help with the parking, as well as cleanup after the event. This is the states largest car show. August 24 is the car show at the Alaska State Fair. There will also be a parade. Mike will be out of town but Gwyn has met with the coordinator and Mark Graber agreed to assist Gwyn with the show and parade for the State Fair. Kendall Toyota has offered an outdoor car show at their Old Seward location. The club decided on September 21, 2013 as the show date, as this will be after the Denali trip. There was some discussion about doing an indoor show at the Wasilla Kendall Toyota location. It was voted and approved at this time to do a car show in Anchorage, at the Old Seward Kendall location on September 21, this year. The possibility of a show in Wasilla for next year can be explored. Jim Fredenhagen discussed the current club banner. He suggested we get some prices for a newer, more definitive banner better featuring the dogs. Jim will gather info and share at a later meeting. He has used Brani's Signs on Old Seward Highway. The Denali Tour is September 13, 14 and 15. We will actually drive into the park on the 14th, Saturday. Donn presented a request from Sheila at Chester Park Assisted Living Facility. She was interested in a car show at their facility. The facility houses about 180 people. The meeting was adjourned at 7:31 pm. Respectfully submitted, Pam Tanora, Secretary

7 The month of July has seen a full schedule of activities for the Antique Mushers of Alaska. It is a perennial state of affairs that we end up chasing our tails at this time of the year, but the parades and car shows of the summer are what this hobby is all about. Winter months give us a chance to recuperate and to get our cars in shape for the next year s onslaught. The summer of 2013 should go down in history as the most beautiful in memory. The incredible weather definitely gifted us with some of the best shows and parades we have ever had. Attendees at events were almost giddy from the beautiful blue skies and sunbathed streets, mountains and rivers to say nothing of our cars. In addition to the stories about our events, this issue presents a phenomenon in One Man s Treasures: many very nice Tinkering Times Editorial cars for sale. This is a chance for interested individuals to lay hands on some very nice pieces of automotive history especially ever-popular Model A s. Many thanks to Jim Fredenhagen for his input in this area. On another note, your editor and his bride will be doing some traveling this month to celebrate our 50 th wedding anniversary. Consequently, I am going to need help with next month s newsletter. If you have stories or photos of events that happen in our absence, them to me so that I have something to put together for the edition in the few short hours between our return and the September mailing deadline. Thanks. Tom 7 Get Ready To Have Fun at the State Fair! The State Fair Parade and Car Show is Saturday, August 24 in Palmer.! The parade staging area will be!along S.Valley Way, and we need our vehicles to be in place by 10:30 a.m. for a start time of 11:00.! After the parade, we will!enter the fairgrounds at the Yellow gate and the fair staff will provide directions to the show area.!we will display our cars on a paved, gated road at the entrance to the Logging Show. Folks will need to get a car pass! for their vehicles.! The car pass is free, but folks will have to pay!fair admission. Mark Graber will be obtaining car passes on or about August 5, so that the passes can!be distributed!during the August 14 meeting. I was missing data for the entire month of July in 2005; and, unfortunately, due to club events this year I was unable to record twelve days. I used the partial information for Judging from the figures I had, 2004 still would have won out with the highest temps. Our local news media reports that we are in a record-breaking year for the number of consecutive days of above 70. The warm weather has certainly contributed to some of the bestever events for us in terms of audience participation.
