2 JULY 2014 T HE C O NS TE L L A T I O N PAGE 2 This Month: The Family Affair The exact date is a memory, however, I know it was in the late fall or early winter of There was snow on the ground. It was a Saturday, midafternoon. My brother and I had just returned from watching a High School cheerleading competition at the now defunct Southglenn Mall (Not as perverted as it sounds; we were in High School). Despite the fact that all of the cars were home, including my sister's (she had decided to visit from college), the house was empty when we entered. We searched. Bedrooms, basement, garage, nobody was there. Our search took us to the driveway looking for strange tire tracks. A strange rattling noise arose from the distance. It got louder and a white Mercedes diesel station wagon came rumbling over the crest of the driveway. "Get in!" my sister exclaimed from the back seat as my father grinned behind the wheel. We drove for blocks with my brother and me questioning the origins of the car. "Who loaned it to you?", "Are you going to buy it?, seem to come to mind. My sister kept indicating that it was ours; however, my brother and I were in disbelief. Always a man of few words, my father reached into the glove box and handed me an envelope. I had never seen a retail car deal contract before, but I knew that nobody would sign that many documents except to purchase an automobile. The seed was planted and Mercedes has been a way of life for our family ever since. The old 300TD is still in use, and just got a clean bill of health. My brother is visiting from overseas and needs a car to drive to share with his kids. The legend lives on. Happy Motoring! Niels WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!! Originally setup about 10 years ago, with just minor upgrades in appearance and function since then, it had become outdated and did not integrate well with the information on MBCA s national website. Prompted by a significant rate increase from the company that hosted the old site, the MHS Board made the decision to completely redo the site with the help of MBCA. The new website is fully integrated with the National MBCA site with upcoming events, event reports, technical information, membership information, and links to local dealers, service facilities and museums. For full access to local and national events, MBCA technical information and your membership profile you will need to log into your free MBCA account that comes with your MBCA membership. If you haven t set up account access yet, you can register for access with your name and MBCA account number, which is on your MBCA Membership card or can be found on most MBCA publications and mailings. Visit our new website at milehigh.mbca.org/. Can you find the photo from a club event and rally in Aspen that took place in 1958? Don t forget the. Between milehigh and mbca!

Members enjoyed the scenery along winding roads as they traveled to the high mountain valley south of Walden where the Refuge is situated. At an elevation ranging from 8,100 to 8,700 feet above sea level, the Arapaho Refuge is the highest refuge in the lower 48 states. Jay Hokanson The weather was a little cool and skies overcast, but that didn t stop our participants from enjoying a late morning stroll along the Moose-Goose Trail, checking out the scenic refuge wetlands winding along the Illinois River. Jay Hokanson Niels Haubold Jay Hokanson Jay Hokanson After a leisurely lunch in Walden, our group took in views at the spectacular scenic overview pictured above, then enjoyed a 6 mile self-guided auto tour that wound through a variety of Refuge habitats. Various waterfowl and other water birds were abundant, as well as white-tailed prairie dogs and pronghorn. Several members opted to stay in Winter Park for the evening, some members went on to Steamboat Springs for dinner, and others headed back to Denver after enjoying this memorable excursion.
