4 TRUE STORIES BY MERCEDES-BENZ DRIVERS ROBERT DAVIS When we saw the car, the force of the impact shocked us. ALEXANDER BRIGANDI I had gone off the highway at 70 mph and landed so far into the woods, passing cars would have never seen me. Back in 1999, our son lost control of his mother s 1999 E300 Diesel, hit a tree, and totaled the car. To give you an idea of how hard of an impact it was, our son s foot was pinned beneath the parking brake broken and his right hip was dislocated. When we saw the car, the force of the impact shocked us, but things could have been worse according to the police, for all his injuries, had our son not been driving such a solid car, he could have been killed. We ve been Mercedes-Benz owners for the past 25 years as we have first hand experience of their excellent safety features. It was a cool April evening in Connecticut, I was a freshman in college, and I was churning my way through midterms. Needless to say, I was stressed out and over tired, so once a group study session had ended, it was back home for some much-needed rest. It was only a 15- minute drive, but at some point I yawned and rested my eyes for what felt like just a second. The next thing I remember is hearing glass shattering all around me, the awful sound of riding over rough terrain, and then my E-Class wrapping itself around a tree. 4
5 As I regained consciousness, I felt in a fog and disoriented. The smell of burning plastic, rubber, and the deflated airbag was in my nostrils and will stay with me forever. I went to grab my cellphone, which had been in the seat next to me, but was now on the floor in multiple pieces. With the phone out of commission, my only connection to help was the Tele-Aid operator who had automatically come on the line to check on me. Still, as I had no idea where I was, my first instinct was to get out of the car. When I finally clambered out of my Mercedes under a full moon, I saw what happened: I had gone off the highway at 70 mph and landed so far into the woods, passing cars would have never seen me. As I stood shocked and shaking, I looked at what was once the most beautiful car I had ever seen it was now a complete and total wreck. I nearly broke down, but reminded myself that I was still moving, walking, and talking. My old E- Class served its purpose and did everything it was supposed to do. RUDY BAUER My wife and I had our world suddenly and literally turned upside down by a driver who ran a stop sign and proceeded to t-bone our ML500 at a speed in excess of 50 mph. As the speeding car approached my vehicle, I knew we were about to be hit and that there was no way to escape the impact. But using the power and quick accelerating ability of my Mercedes, I was able to surge ahead and prevent a direct impact on the driver s side. The speeding car hit my ML500 just in front of the rear wheel, causing it to spin 180 degrees while rolling over one and three quarters times ultimately landing driver s side down. Despite the violence of the collision, my wife and I were able to exit the sunroof and found that we were absolutely unharmed. The cabin was intact despite the rollover. Our lives were saved that day by the superior design and strength of my Mercedes. We bought our third Mercedes the following week. 5

11 Pikes Peak Section Rocky Mountain Regional Event The Pikes Peak Section has planned a Rocky Mountain Regional Event planned for September , the middle of prime leaf-changing season. We ll drive through the beautiful mountain colors, explore historic Camp Hale, and experience downtown Frisco. All this fun can be yours for the minimal event fee of $15 per person. That includes water/juice each day, snacks for the road, pizza, salad & sodas on Friday night, and cake, cookies & coffee on Saturday. Feel free to bring your favorite alcoholic beverage on a BYOB basis. We ll stay at a historic B&B right on Main Street with full breakfast, daily happy hour with wine and heavy hors d oeuvres, and free parking. The Lodge has limited king, queen, and double rooms with private baths ($139-$184/night) and they re going fast. We ve reserved a block of rooms for us. So give them a call at Tell them you re with the Pikes Peak M-B Club to get your 10% discounted rate. Please reserve your rooms as soon as possible. Here s the weekend schedule of activities: Friday, September 22: Check into the Frisco Lodge, an historic stagecoach B&B. Complimentary wine and cheese are served in the main living room each night. We will have the use of a private den off the main lobby during our stay. We plan to have gourmet pizza and salad delivered there for our group for dinner. Col Tom Duhs, USA, Ret, and Mr Dick Over, a 10th Mountain Division veteran will be our guest speakers for the evening. Col Duhs is the unofficial historian of the 10th Mountain Division (the Ski Troops of WWII). He is currently working on a screenplay for a mini-series and a book on the 10th Mtn Div. His passion is the 10th and spreading the word about its importance in history. This will be followed by a musical interlude by Mr Clark Craig who will entertain us with jodie calls and WWII-era songs. Saturday, September 23, we ll start the road rally up to Camp Hale. We hope the leaves will be in full color and the drive should be spectacular. Everyone will have a road map and questions to answer by reading the historic markers about 10th Mtn Division involvement with WWII. Col Duhs and Mr Over will accompany us and lead us on a drive-through of the Camp Hale site. We will be able to access several areas most people don t know about. Lunch will be in historic Red Cliff, CO at Mango Mama s Saloon and Grill, with rooftop seating. Upon our return to town, we are invited to a late afternoon reception at the Adams cabin off Main St, Frisco before wine and cheese starts at the Frisco Lodge. Dinner is on your own, since we re within easy walking to any place on Main St...if anyone is hungry, that is!!!
