1 Technical Visit and Workshop August 2012 Sunday, August 12 Attendees arrive at Denver International Airport (DIA) and check into Fairfield Inn, DIA Fairfield Inn, (888) , Reference: Day 1: Monday, August 13 Attendees of site visits travel by bus from Fairfield Inn to Moab, Utah and check into La Quinta Inn (435) Reference: GROUP # :30 Load bus 8:00 Depart Denver 10:00 Rest stop at Frisco rest area 12:00 13:00 Lunch in Glenwood Springs (Pizza and salad delivered to Two Rivers Park picnic area.) 13:00 Depart Glenwood Springs 15:15 Rest stop located just west of the Colorado/Utah border 15:45 Depart rest area 17:30 Arrive in Moab
2 Day 2: Tuesday, August 14 Site Visit 1 Travel from Moab to White Mesa Mill (just south of Blanding, Utah) to tour an operating uraniumvanadium mill. In addition, visit the Monticello U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) uranium mill tailings disposal cell and its evapotranspiration cover; and view the former mill site that has been converted to a hiking/mountain biking area. Return to and overnight in Moab. Ÿ DOE Lead for Monticello: Jalena Dayvault S.M. Stoller Corporation (Stoller): Jody Waugh 8:00 Leave Moab 9:30 Arrive at White Mesa Mill. Attendees need to dress appropriately (long pants and closed-toed shoes required, long-sleeved shirt preferred) for the tour. There will be hard hats, safety goggles, and ear plugs at the site for attendees to wear during the tour. 11:30 Depart White Mesa Mill 12:00 13:00 Lunch at MD Ranch Cook House, Monticello, Utah 13:30 Visit DOE site in Monticello (2.5 hours) 16:00 Depart Monticello 17:00 Arrive in Moab Day 3: Wednesday, August 15 Site Visit 2 Visit the Moab Uranium Mill Tailing Remedial Action (UMTRA) field offices for an overview of the project and a site visit to the former Atlas Mill Site where tailings are being excavated and transported by train to the Crescent Junction disposal site. Optional late afternoon tour of Arches National Park. Overnight in Moab. (See the proposed schedule for Moab UMTRA.) 9:00 Arrive Moab UMTRA Site 9:00 11:30 Presentations and site tour 11:45 12:45 Lunch delivered to Moab site 13:00 16:15 Continue site tour and presentations 16:15 Wrap-up 16:45 Arrive in Moab 18:00 20:30 Optional tour of Arches National Park
3 Day 4: Thursday, August 16 Site Visit 3 Ÿ DOE Lead for Green River: Mark Kautsky Stoller: Craig Goodknight 8:00 Travel to Crescent Junction UMTRA Disposal site 8:45 Arrive at Crescent Junction site 8:45 10:45 Crescent Junction disposal site tour 10:45 Depart Crescent Junction site 11:15 Arrive at Green River UMTRA disposal site 12:00 13:00 Lunch at Tamarisk Restaurant, Green River, Utah 13:00 Tour John Wesley Powell River History Museum (located across the street from the Tamarisk Restaurant) 13:45 Depart Green River Visit to Crescent Junction UMTRA disposal site for the uranium mill tailings from the Atlas mill in Moab. Travel from Crescent Junction to Green River, Utah, to visit the Green River UMTRA disposal site. Travel from Green River to Grand Junction. Overnight in Fairfield Inn, Grand Junction ( ) (970) , Reference: Environmental group working with DOE in GJ/. 14:30 Visit Sego Canyon petroglyphs just north of Thompson Springs ( If Sego Canyon is not acceptable to bus driver, then a stop at Trail Through Time and Mygatt-Moore Quarry (dinosaur fossils) is optional 15:30 Drive back to Grand Junction 17:00 Arrive at Fairfield Inn, Grand Junction (Attendees on their own for dinner. On Thursday evenings a farmer's market is held on Main Street in Grand Junction (where the Fairfield Inn is located). The farmer's market features a wide variety of fresh, local produce; vendors; and entertainment.
4 Day 5: Friday, August 17 Site Visit 4 Travel from Grand Junction to Rifle, Colorado, to visit the uranium mill tailings disposal facility site at Estes Gulch. Also visit the New Rifle processing site to discuss groundwater contamination, use of institutional controls, and site reuse (e.g., solar array). Return to and overnight in Grand Junction at the Fairfield Inn. Ÿ DOE Lead for Rifle: Rich Bush Stoller: Dick Dayvault 8:00 Leave Grand Junction (Fairfield Inn) 9:00 10:15 Visit Rifle disposal site 10:30 11:30 Visit Old Rifle site; discuss research 12:00 13:00 Box lunches from Creek Bend Restaurant delivered to Rifle Information Center Rest Area Pavilion 13:15 Visit New Rifle site 14:00 Drive back to Grand Junction 15:30 Arrive at Grand Junction hotels Days 6 7: Saturday and Sunday, August Free weekend. Activities that you can participate in as a group include a visit to the Colorado National Monument, the annual Peach Festival in the Palisade, and winery tour. Tour attendees have been provided a list of optional weekend activities, but will also have the choice to take part in scheduled tours or events by bus on Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning.
5 Day 8: Monday, August 20 Site Visit 5 Travel from Grand Junction hotels to Grand Junction Disposal Cell for a half day tour. Discussion of Vicinity Property Program, studies of water balance in cells using lysimeters. Return to the Fairfield Inn by noon. *Attendees on their own for lunch Ÿ DOE Lead for Rifle: Rich Bush Stoller: Gary Baur 8:15 Leave Grand Junction (Fairfield Inn) 9:00 Meet at Grand Junction disposal site for tour 10:30 Drive to OMMS to view the former processing site 11:30 *Attendees on their own for lunch 14:00 16:00 Registration at the Fairfield Inn, Grand Junction * On Monday between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., there will be a desk set up for registration for the workshop that starts the next day Days 9 11: Tuesday Thursday, August Grand Mesa Conference Room, DOE Office of Legacy, Grand Junction Office (see attached agenda). The bus will transport attendees to and from the workshop. The workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. each day. * Workshop attendees will register in the Grand Mesa Room if they did not register at Fairfield Inn on Monday. They will receive informational material regarding the workshop. Regulatory Oversight of Uranium Legacy Sites August :00 17:15 Workshop August 21 18:00 20:00 BBQ dinner at Devils Kitchen picnic area on the Colorado National Monument
6 Day 12: Friday, August 24 Half-day RSLS Workshop 11:30 13:00 Catered lunch at Grand Junction DOE site 13:00 Depart approximately 1:00 p.m. by bus from Grand Junction to Denver International Airport, Denver, Colorado (overnight in Fairfield Inn, near Denver International Airport) Day 13: Saturday, August 25 Attendees begin return flights home.
