2 JUNE 2014 T HE C O NS TE L L A T I O N PAGE 2 Wacky weather abounds this Spring! It is not uncommon to experience multiple seasons on the same day on the Colorado Front Range and this year has been no exception. Our plans were thwarted for the Lightning Hybrids tour when staff was called out of town; however, MHS Webmaster Jay Hokanson put together a fantastic alternate plan and fun was had by all that attended. Mercedes-Benz of Loveland was very gracious in showing us their new digs and treating us to bagels and coffee. We poked around in a couple of different Sprinter configurations, a CLA, and a few hearty souls experienced the new S Class from behind the wheel. Attendees then enjoyed the Loveland Museum, and after lunch many took time to stroll around in old downtown Loveland enjoying the nice weather, more art, and checking out some of the antique stores in the area. We do plan to reschedule the Lightning Hybrids tour as soon as possible. We have plenty of great events coming up that should fare better against the weather! If you didn't get your car registered for the Exotic Car Show at Arapahoe Community College on June 8th, be sure to come out and see the cars, grab a bite to eat, and do some people watching. It is ALWAYS a good time! The Spring trip to the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge on June 14 th will be a fun trip for all. I encourage you to join the Mile-High Section on this scenic, educational and fun outing. I d say that great convertible weather is guaranteed, but this is Colorado The Mile-High/Pikes Peak Sections joint picnic is at Absher Acres again July 12th. If you missed it last year, be there this time, it is likely the last time it will happen, as Clark & Karen will be soon moving out of state. Clark & Karen are great hosts! It s a sure bet the food will be great and there will be lots of surprises in the Rally. If you need to stay closer to home that weekend, the German-American Car Club will be hosting their annual Biergartenfest July Contact me at n.hauhold@outlook.com for more info on the Biergartenfest activities. 7 JUNE 2014 T HE C O NS TE L L A T I O N PAGE 7 A Day at the Ballpark MHS Fans and Friends ages 4-94 enjoyed a great day with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Play Ball! That is what thirty one MHS fans ranging in age from four to ninety-four heard at the Colorado Sky Sox baseball game on May 18, We sat in in VIP picnic area where we could spread out over five levels of tabletop seating and meet and greet members of our club and members of the Colorado Z club. MHS Fans were treated an added bonus NL Batting Champ, Rockies Outfielder Michael Cuddyer, was playing a rehab game with the Sky Sox on our day at the park! Cuddyer had been out since mid-april recouping from a hamstring strain. What a treat for us! Cuddyer was reactivated by the Rockies for their game against the Giants on May 20th. Rockies Second Baseman Josh Rutledge also played in Colorado Springs that day. He was reactivated by the Rockies on May 23rd. The weather was warm and breezy, the buffet was delicious and our attendees got the opportunity to meet the Sky Sox mascot, Fox, who signed autographs and posed for pictures. Unfortunately, the game ended in a loss. However, Sky Sox staff went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed a fantastic day. We look forward to making this an annual event. Speaking of autographs, Colorado Rockies right fielder, Michael Cuddyer, autographed a baseball for MHS Member Jerry Vergatos and son Andrew! And MHS webmaster Jay Hokanson caught a foul ball hit by Rockies 2nd baseman Josh Rutledge, which was immediately commandeered by wife Deborah.

8 JUNE 2014 T HE C O NS TE L L A T I O N PAGE 8 The Mile-High Section Has a New Website Check Us Out At milehigh.mbca.org The old Mile-High Website has been showing its age for some time. Originally setup about 10 years ago, with just minor upgrades in appearance and function since then, it had become outdated and did not integrate well with the information on MBCA s national website. Prompted by a significant rate increase from the company that hosted the old site, the MHS Board made the decision to completely redo the site with the help of MBCA. The new website is fully integrated with the National MBCA site with upcoming events, event reports, technical information, membership information, and links to local dealers, service facilities and museums. For full access to local and national events, MBCA technical information and your membership profile you will need to log into your free MBCA account that comes with your MBCA membership. If you haven t set up account access yet, you can register for access with your name and MBCA account number, which is on your MBCA Membership card or can be found on most MBCA publications and mailings. Visit our new website at milehigh.mbca.org/. Can you find the photo from a club event and rally in Aspen that took place in 1958? Don t forget the. Between milehigh and mbca! THE HAPPY CAR COLUMN This Month: Time takes its toll on a bushing By Niels Haubold We know that our high altitude climate is harsh. The sun's rays are more intense, our engines gasp for oxygen in our dry air, and deicers create oxidation and corrosion. I have recently experienced the havoc these elements can be on cars that sit idle in them. A new Ford Ranger added to my personal fleet and a low Mile Jeep at work both suffered the ill effects of lack of use and outdoor storage. The Ranger has relatively low mileage at 115,000 when you consider it is 20 years old but I think it was only used during snow storms. The under carriage is pretty rusty. In fact, I was leery of the trailer hitch assembly and removed it. I was able to peel off layers of metal until there was a hole all the way through it. The shocks and bushings were shot and the tires had cracks in them like the Grand Canyon. The paint also shows signs of neglect as it is peeling off the roof and lacquer checked on the hood. I have a camouflage wrap in the plans to address this. It has taken a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to gather this rig up, but she is coming around. I picked up some flat black BBQ spray on sale that I intend to spray the under carriage with to seal it. The Jeep is a 2006 model and was traded in with 36,XXX miles. This rig was also stored outside. It suffered some effects of dry rot on the undercarriage and tires, however, it was seals and gaskets that racked up the bill on this car. Seals that don't see regular work dry out and crack, too. The valve cover gaskets are usually the first to go as they sit the furthest from the oil when the engine isn't running. It is all downhill from there. Even the window seals and door gaskets can shrink and harden, losing their ability to perform. The long and short of this lesson from the School of Hard Knocks is this; Don't let your prized baby sit around. Like any member of your family, your car needs exercise and a chance to limber up. Work out the kinks. I think I'll go fire up the old 16 valve. Her new valve cover gasket is already leaking again. Happy Cars = Happy Drivers Happy Motoring! Niels
