2 a) ` Letter From The President Bob Mashburn President, Mile-High Section June Behind the Wheel As we head into our summer months we have some great events coming up, I look forward to meeting many of our new members on our selfie drive. On June 9th it s our Selfie Drive, we will start at Starbucks in Golden, drive into the hills, take some selfies along the way and stop for lunch at the Morrison Inn in Morrison. This drive will also be our welcome for new members and lunch is on the Mile-High Section for those who joined from September RSVP to Natalie Mashburn at nataliemashburn@yahoo.com by June 7th. June 10th is the Colorado Concours D Elegance car show at Arapahoe Community College. If you like a wide verity of cars we recommend this show. The club is not attending this as an event, however, many members will be attending the show. July 14th is a great annual event - our Joint Picnic with the Pikes Peak Section. This year it s the Mile-High Sections turn to hots. A tour of Hiwan Homestead Museum with a picnic after. I want to thank Jay & Deb Hokanson for setting this year s event up. (see the sign up form for more information). Aug 11th is the Leadville Matchless mine tour. This mine made a fortune for Horace Tabor and his wife Baby Doe. Looking ahead to November 3rd it s our planning meeting for 2019 events, if you have ideas for a monthly or regional event let me know. This meeting is open to all members. TRIP REPORT SOUTH PARK Our South Park-Hoosier Pass-Breckenridge drive started out May 12 in a damp chilly Denver under a gray threatening cloud cover.

By the time we arrived in Fairplay all was sunshine with a few cotton balls dotting a deep blue sky.

Arriving a bit early for lunch, we all took a stroll down Main Street.

Fortunately he (Mike) escaped without harm Then the creature attacked and bit Laura Lass and frightened us all.

6 TRIP REPORT SOUTH PARK Our South Park-Hoosier Pass-Breckenridge drive started out May 12 in a damp chilly Denver under a gray threatening cloud cover. As we drove south the sun began to poke out between puffy clouds. By the time we arrived in Fairplay all was sunshine with a few cotton balls dotting a deep blue sky. Hoosier Pass still boasted patches of snow but not enough to promise any runoff worth a worry. Arriving a bit early for lunch, we all took a stroll down Main Street. Suddenly a velociraptor that had escaped from the Breckenridge Zoo jumped out and startled Mike Redel out of his wits. Fortunately he (Mike) escaped without harm Then the creature attacked and bit Laura Lass and frightened us all. She dismissed the attack as just kitten scratches from a very young animal just trying to be playful, obviously a male. The doctor later pronounced the scratches minor and Laura looks forward to a full recovery. She will tell you all about it at the next MBCA event. Following a delicious lunch at CB & Potts, Ron and Laura Lass, recovering her composure after the frightening encounter with the Velociraptor, ate a gargantuan dessert with enough calories in it to last both of them a week. The rest of us gained a bit of weight just by watching. It was a great time. 6

9 Joint Section Picnic Hiwan Homestead Museum, Saturday, July 14, 2018 at noon 4208 Timbervale Dr., Evergreen You won t want to miss this fun and fascinating historical tour. A cool, summer afternoon at this true hidden gem in Evergreen! We will meet at 11:45 am at the Museum for our special guided tour. In the 1890's, Mary Neosho Williams, a Civil War widow, and her daughter Josepha, part of the aristocratic society of Denver acquired a simple log structure and hired a Scottish carpenter to convert it into a summer cottage. In 1889, Josepha graduated from Medical School in Denver and became one of Colorado's first women doctors. Seven years later, Josepha married Canon Charles Winfred Douglas, an Episcopal clergyman who achieved world acclaim for his musical work. After Joespha s death in 1938 the house was sold to Tulsa oilman, Darst Buchanan and the property named Hiwan Ranch, after Buchanan's prize winning Hiwan Hereford cattle. Six generations of notable families lived in this rustic mountain lodge (each adding new rooms), before it was developed as a museum by Jefferson County in We will tour this wonderful home with one of the Hiwan s special tourguides. After our tour we will enjoy a picnic lunch at the Shelter in the Hiwan Heritage Park just adjacent to the Museum. This is one of Jay and my favorite places. The Museum and grounds are beautiful, with a rich history and peaceful mountain setting. We really are looking forward to hosting our joint picnic at this venue. Cost is $17.50 per person, which includes your admission to the museum and lunch.
