1 N EWSTIME AT No 4 ~ 9Official Monthly Publication of Springfield Lodge No. 409 Editor: PER Larry Tuck October 2018, Volume 41, Issue 1 Phone: sgm92@sbcglobal.net 2223 East Bennett Street, Springfield, Missouri Club: Office: elks409@sbcglobal.net From Your Exalted Ruler Mark Adkins Well just like that Summer has come and gone, and you can already sense Fall is upon us. I would like to give a round of thanks to our Pool Chairman Roger DeClerqe for another successful season, and to all those who helped weekend after weekend making our pool season welcoming and safe. August is usually a pretty slow month here at the 409 but 2018 has proven to bring new opportunities and challenges. Our Lodge room project continues and the final touches are being done as I write this article. A big thanks to PER Larry Gilmore for all his work making our Lodge room beautiful, and to the Elks Riders for their generosity in making it all a reality. I keep saying it and I will say it again, It Takes a Village. Also a big thank you to our Lodge Manager Charlie Edmisson and her crew for their ability to switch gears in August with the unfortunate passing of PER Michael Hess. Their ability to make short term changes in plans and schedules allowed for the most beautiful and supportive Memorial Service one could ever hope for. Michael s family is in awe at the love and support you showed in his honor and you have made a lasting impression on them, not only for the love you showed but what Elks truly stand for. I thank you for that. September 8th we had a Socks for Veterans Sock Hop! What a blast we had and if you didn t see the pictures and videos on our facebook page you need to! The pics and videos tell all. I haven t heard the final numbers as of yet but again you showed up in support and enthusiasm as you do time and time again. Here is what to expect at the 409 in October. Friday, October 5th, The Playboyz will be in the house for your dancing and listening pleasure. Saturday, October 6th, is the Ladies Auxiliary annual auction. Friday, October 12th, we have Sweetwater Band. Saturday, October 13th, we have Amy Marrone and The Family Band in our lounge bringing a variety of classic country and folk music. Friday, October 19th, we have Ms. Lori Locke Band in the house and Friday, October 26th, Rick Lamb and the Phin Addicts are here. So as you can see the temperature may be changing but the fun and benevolent activities are constant. By the way have I ever told you about important ENF is to our Order and it only takes $5 a year to help everyone out? Lol Let s kick Fall into gear with enthusiasm! Let s help a neighbor. Let s tell a Veteran how much we appreciate them. Let s work together Charity Justice Brotherly Love Fidelity as a T.E.A.M. to spread the message that Elks Care Elks Share. Tell your Officers and Board of Directors you appreciate their service to this Lodge. Take care of our bartenders, waitresses and staff and let them know they are appreciated. Let s practice Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity everywhere we go. And above all let s have some fun doing it. God bless, be safe and have an awesome October! As always, we met in the lounge at 6:00 pm with reservations made at 6:30 pm. Breakfast for Singles is always the 3rd Monday at Cedar s on S. Campbell at 9:30 am. Our Movie Group selection was Crazy Rich Asians at Springfield 11 with dinner following at Galloway Grill on Tuesday September 11th. The Silver Dollar Group with season passes was tabled for September as our calender was full for the month. The Casino Group went to Downstream on Sept. 12 & 13. Our Dinner Night selection was on The Branson Belle. Keep bringing aluminum cans as all this money goes to the Christmas Food Baskets. Just a friendly reminder to PLEASE be sure the bags are tied securely when you throw them over the fence. It is a real mess to pick up loose cans. If you are unable to make our monthly meeting on the first Tuesday of each month, give one of our Officers a call and they can fill you in. Our next meeting will be on October 2nd. We will meet in the lounge around 6 pm and the meeting is at 7 pm. President Judy Patterson Vice President Shirley Keck Secretary Smokie Findley Treasurer J. R. Ames Judy Patterson, President Elks #409 Singles Manager s Report The Sunday Bloody Mary Brunches have been a great hit! It was supposed to be for just 3 months, but we are going to continue to do them the first Sunday of every month from 11 am - 1 pm. So go to church, sleep late, stay up all night, but don t miss this! We will be serving lunches again on Fridays starting Oct. 5th. The POS system should be completely functional soon, and with training that we will all have to do, it should help out tremendously. Please bear in mind it s a new piece of technology; I am asking for patience and understanding while we transition to this new system. Thank you for your continued support. Charli Edmisson, General Manager cedmisson@yahoo.com 4 Springfield Lodge #409 Elk s Riders The weather is cooling and riding season is still going strong. Our ride to Gaston was a great success. Fun on a pontoon boat ride with an evening of chasing horse flies around with a broom and lots of laughs. The fog rolled in on the river with the moon shining brightly. What a beautiful sight. We have such a great group, lots of fun and laughter. At our last meeting we voted to turn over the Queen of Hearts to the Ladies Auxiliary. They have accepted to take it over. As it stands at this moment, they will start up in October. The Auxiliary will make a formal announcement. The Riders wish the Ladies Auxiliary the best of luck on their new adventure. We know they ll do a fantastic job. The past 5 ½ years have been such fun for the Riders. We raised and gave away $148,500 to our members who were the lucky winners and raised $49,500 for Charities and Lodge improvements. Thank you to all who supported us. We know you will continue to support the Ladies Auxiliary. At the time of this printing we have a ride planned but it has not yet happened. Until next time look both ways and ride safe! 6 Elks National Veterans Service Commission Report Our team took a break from Bingo at the Mount Vernon Veterans Home and provided a barbecue for the residents and staff. We met at the Lodge about 8:30 am and loaded food & beverages into three vehicles, then proceeded to Mount Vernon. Cooking started shortly after 10 am so the staff members could eat at 10:30. The Veterans lunch line started at 11. About 1 pm we closed the line as all that wanted to eat had been fed. Several of our team got to visit with Veterans and staff, including our buddy K.P. All reports are that those conversations included thank you very much from Veterans and staff members. Our team consisted of Bruce & Sandy Bell, Jay Dolis, Dick Fuller, PER Larry & Janey Tuck, PER Tom & Pat Griffin, Gene Gilbreath, David Deragowski, Virginia Bisher, Mary Reed, Robbie Roop, Becky Strunk, and Ellen Weatherly. The Chairs offer many thanks to our team for being well organized and industrious; making it a pleasant event. Our next activity is a return to the Bingo game at the Veterans Home. We will leave the Lodge at 12:45 pm. Gary Bockman, Chairman PER Larry Tuck, Co-Chairman Sandy Bell, Auxiliary Chairman Veterans Committee Community Activities First I want to thank everyone for their continuing support with the donation of aluminum cans. The pools are closed now, so our community families are counting on our Elk families to bring their cans from home. There is a place just over the fence by the DMV box. A special thanks for the Singles who continue to take the cans to be recycled. Our Stocking Full of Cash started out very well. We have sold 37 tickets already. With that in mind we only have 163 left for a chance to win $1,000 for only a $20 bill. Your contribution will give you a feeling of joy in your heart for helping feed 200 needy families in our community. Please remember while you re out doing your shopping to pick up extra vegetables or cans of soup. Share the Elks motto (Elks Care, Elks Share). PER s Tom & Linda Hrdlicka, Chairs Community Activities BOY SCOUT TROOP 409 NEWS NOTICE: Boy Scout Troop 409 meets on Tuesdays, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Come join in the fun adventures of Scouting. At this time we have two more Scouts working toward their Eagle rank. Their projects are fencing for Willard FFA and shelving for the Marine recruiting station. And on a sad note, Troop 409 would like to give one last thanks to PER Mike Hess for all his support and help. Thoughts and prayers to his family! Boy Scout Troop 409 is continually seeking young men to enter the adventures of Scouting.
