3 WELCOME LETTER Welcome! Dear Volunteer, Welcome to Greenbuild 2018! On behalf of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Illinois Green Alliance, we want to thank you for the time and energy you have dedicated to making Geenbuild such a success. This year s conference would not be as successful without volunteers like you! We are very excited to welcome you to Chicago for this great opportunity and experience! This year's theme, Human by Nature, celebrates the intersection of humanity and the built environment. The green building movement embraces all of humanity by making sustainable buildings and environments accessible to everyone. The future of the human race is interwoven with the future of the planet, and the sustainable practices we celebrate and advance at Greenbuild remind us that our success as sustainability advocates, practitioners, professionals and volunteers is more than a movement, it is a responsibility. Your time is greatly appreciated, and we will do all that we can to make your volunteer experience a meaningful one. This packet provides some guidance and some overall direction for your time and McCormick Place and will provide guidance for planning your schedule while you are here. We hope you can experience the collaborative and innovative energy in our city during your time at Greenbuild, with a great deal of workshops as well as educational and networking opportunities. 4 CANDIDATE INFO Candidate Information USGBC Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years of age and full time student OR a young professional age 25 and under (age at the time of the conference in November 2018). When you check into the volunteer room, a fall 2018 schedule or a photo ID will be necessary, depending on which qualification the volunteer is participating under. Full time student is 12 credits undergraduate, and nine credit graduate. In exchange for serving eight hours of volunteer time, you will receive a free 3-day Conference Pass to Greenbuild. The conference provides exciting educational opportunities on the latest in the green building movement, and amazing networking opportunities for students and professionals. This includes access to the opening keynote, celebration, exhibit hall, education sessions, conference credentials, and the closing keynote. Job Description Volunteers help keep waste out of landfills by monitoring recycling and compost stations and help attendees dispose of all waste into the proper waste receptacles. Whether on the Expo Hall floor, in education and meeting rooms, or throughout the halls of the convention center, volunteers are front and center in encouraging and assisting Greenbuild attendees in making Greenbuild a responsible and sustainable event. Chicago is committed to becoming the greenest conference ever and we need your help to make it happen! As a volunteer, you are instrumental to a successful sustainable conference. Check In You must arrive at least 15 minutes before your shift is scheduled to begin. Please plan on arriving early before your first shift. Report directly to the Volunteer Office (W181C). You do not need to check in at any of the attendee check-in areas at the main entrance. Upon arrival, Volunteer Office Coordinators will check you in and provide your conference credentials and volunteer t-shirt. You must wear this shirt during all shifts. You will then be directed to your assignment location. At the end of your shift, you must return to the Volunteer Office to check out. Please note that the Office Coordinators do not have any ability to change shifts or adjust locations. If you do not fulfill all eight hours of service, you will be expected to pay for your 3-day conference pass. Don t forget your badge and shirt for every shift! You will be required to scan in and out in order to properly receive credit for shifts. 8 EXPERIENCING CHICAGO Near McCormick Place This area is is known as the South Loop, and is one of the city s latest areas to witness massive development. It hosts the Chicago Bears, several museums, and most recently DePaul University s basketball teams. The Museum Campus Peninsula with access to the Field Museum, Alder Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium Soldier Field Home of Bears football with historical architecture from the early 20th century Museum of Science and Industry Farther south, but worth the trek via bus, lakeshore paths or rideshare Vibrant arts scenes, numerous cultural attractions, robust shopping & historic architecture here is your personal guide to spots you must experience while in town, as well as neighborhoods, history and all things Chicago. Downtown Chicago s business district is called the Loop primarily for the shape that the converging L tracks make aroud the downtown core. Beyond towering skyscrapers, the Loop also boasts parks, boulevards, fountains, and public play areas. Cloudgate A giant, reflective bean-shaped sculpture more commonly known as the Bean Millennium Park Large lakefront park hosting playgrounds, rock climbing, theaters, and more Buckingham Fountain A massive fountain dating from before the turn of the 20 th century Willis Tower Tallest occupiable point in the U.S. with views from the 103 rd floor SkyDeck Art Institute of Chicago Chicago s premiere art museum River North & Streeterville Located north of the Loop just over the Chicago River, this extention of the skyline includes Streeterville and Gold Coast. But did you know that there is a thriving sustainable dining movement in Chicago as well? 11 GETTING AROUND CHICAGO Public Transit - CTA Bus, L Train, Metra Chicago s public transit consists of regional commuter trains and a city-based rapid transit system. Metra, the commuter trains, connects the suburbs to the city, as well as Downtown to both McCormick Place where Greenbuild is held, and the Museum Campus where the Opening Celebration is held. The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) is our rapid transit system connecting the many neighborhoods of Chicago. It consists of buses and rapid transit trains, better known locally as the L. To minimize environmental impact of travel for Greenbuild 2018, make a sustainable choice & use public transit options whenever possible. CTA The CTA consists of both buses and trains. The buses are numbered, while the L trains are colored. The CTA also connects both airports to Chicago. It should take approximately an hour to get downtown from both Midway and O Hare and signs are clearly marked to find the CTA at both airports. Most transfers between lines are found in the Loop. See the following page for a city-wide CTA Rail Map or visit The most common ways to get to McCormick Place via the CTA are as follows: Green Line Take or transfer to the Green Line from stations in the Loop. There is a McCormick Place station that lets riders out 6 blocks from the venue. The train ride from State/Lake station is about 15 minutes and walk time is about 15 minutes. Trains leave about every 10 minutes. Depending staying, the #3 Bus goes straight down Michi- Bus on where you are gan Ave with stops at most intersections. This line lets out directly in front of McCormick Place. Be aware that during rush hours, traffic could take a bit longer so plan ahead. The bus trip from Randolph and Michigan takes about 30 minutes in regular traffic and buses leave every 15 minutes. Metra Metra is predominantly used to connect the outlying suburbs to the city. The main city stations are Ogilvie and Union Station. Conveniently for Greenbuild, there is also the Metra Electric Line that leaves from Millennium Station at the corner of Randolph and Michigan Avenue, right downtown. This line has stops directly inside McCormick Place and outside the Museum Campus. The ride to McCormick Place takes about 15 minutes and trains run approximately every 40 minutes. Schedules can be found at Tickets All forms of transit are accessible through Ventra ticket cards or passes at CTA CTA riders need a physical ticket that will be scanned upon entry to the bus or L station. Ventra cards may be purchased at any L station, while the Ventra mobile app allows users to reload transit cards with any dollar value and check arrival times. A new Ventra card costs $5, which is refunded once loaded with fare. A single ride for the L is $2.50 and $2.25 for the bus. The CTA offers 1, 3, and 7-day unlimited ride passes for $10, $20, and $28 as well as the Ventra card that can be reloaded through the app as necessary. Greenbuild Chicago

12 GETTING AROUND CHICAGO Metra Metra riders can purchase a ticket through the Ventra app and show the conductor when on board. Tickets can also be purchased onboard the train directly with the conductors using cash only, and at select stations. To minimize environmental impact of travel for Greenbuild 2018, make a sustainable choice & use public transit options whenever possible. You can further navigate Chicago transit via Google Maps, which will show route options and travel times. Bike Sharing - Divvy Divvy is Chicago s bike share provider, with 6,000 bikes available at 570+ stations across Chicago. Divvy provides residents and visitors with a convenient, affordable, earth-friendly option for getting around and exploring Chicago. Divvy bikes are specially designed, sturdy and durable bikes that are locked into a network of docking stations around the city. Bikes can be unlocked from one station and returned to any other station in the system. Bikes can be rented via the Divvy app or directly from the kiosks on the bike racks themselves. Bikes can be rented $3/trip for a single ride up to 30 minutes or with a $15 Explorer Pass, which gives you unlimited 3-hour rides in any 24-hour period. Special - Divvy has extended special pricing for Greenbuild. When purchasing an Explorer Pass, enter code GREEN in the app or kiosk to receive $5 off November 12-17th. To find the best route to your destination via bike, please refer to Google Maps. Walking - Sidewalks, Pedways, Lakeshore Paths Depending on where you are staying, Chicago can also be very walkable. Sidewalks allow you to be your own tour guide, while the lakefrount s extensive path system offers access to picturesque views. If the weather isn t accomodating, use Chicago s many pedways that form an almost-entirely underground walking system. A pedway map can be found at: t/pedestrian/ped aymap2013.pdf Rideshare and Taxis Chicago has many traditional taxis as well as rideshare options such as Lyft and Uber that can accessed through their individual apps. Lyft If other public transit or active transportation choices are not applicable, we recommend using Lyft, the official rideshare sponsor of Greenbuild. As the first and only carbon-neutral rideshare company, Lyft is stepping up on climate change. 15 FAQs Where do I get my badge? You will pick up your conference badge from the Volunteer Office in W181C. You do not need to go to main attendee registration. Can I change a shift? Yes. You may re-access your registration and make changes to your shift until November 5. After that date, no changes may be made. Volunteer leaders onsite are also unable to to accommodate shift changes. What happens if I don't fulfill my 8 hours of service to Greenbuild? You must complete your 8 volunteer hours in order to receive your conference pass. If you do not complete your hours, you are expected to pay for your conference pass. However, if you simply cannot make it to the conference, please contact GB2018volunteers@gmail.com What's included with my registration to Greenbuild? Your registration includes access to main events on Nov.14-Nov.16. Your registration does NOT include access to Green Building Tours or workshops on Nov. 12 or Summits or Workshops on Nov Your registration also does NOT include travel or housing. Can I attend additional events at Greenbuild? Yes. You may add additional items to your registration for the associated fee. Do my 8 hours of volunteer time need to be completed in consecutive shifts? No, you may be assigned two separate 4 hour shifts. May I attend sessions before I complete my 8 hours of volunteer time? Yes, as long as they are not during your scheduled volunteer shift. You may pick up your conference badge from the Volunteer Office prior to completing your 8 hours. Will there be a secure place to leave bags/backpacks during my volunteer shift? You may leave your items in the Volunteer Office, which will be staffed, but Greenbuild is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. We recommend keeping valuables with you. Will volunteers be provided refreshments or meals? There will be coffee, tea, water and light snacks in the Volunteer Office, but all meals are on your own.
