Anniversaries None 2nd 4th 19th 20th 23rd 27th Larry s Lessons Like ships passing nearby in the night, close but out of sight, Sue and I have lived in many of the same areas as Garry and Joanne Bryan over the last 60-plus years, but did not have the privilege of knowing them until recently. It was with sadness and condolences for the family that we and the club attended the memorial for Garry. A long-time Model A member, Garry passed away on February 7, He was very active in our Columbia Basin Model A club and was our club president in 1995, 2002 and He was currently treasurer of our club. Garry and Joanne attended our meetings, went to several of the Northwest Regional Model A Meets and participated in most of our local tours over the years. He was a scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory at Hanford for about 40 years. He loved his job so much that he retired, went back to work and then finally retired for good in Their car, Clarabell, is a 1929 Roadster that Joanne s father owned. It has provided many hours of enjoyment as it carried them on tours, meets and joy rides. Garry will be missed by all. 3 Wine & Chocolate Extravaganza Our annual Valentine s Day event happened on February 16th at Rick and Janet Budzeck s house in Richland. What could be better than wine, chocolate and conversing with your Model A friends? Ok, the Dow Jones Industrial could go to 30,000, the Seahawks could win another Superbowl...but we re Model A people, grounded in reality. This event is something that I look forward to all year, because it s really good wine, chocolate and friends! Attending the Wine and Chocolate Extravaganza were: Rick & Janet Budzeck, Larry & Sue Campbell, Bruce & Shelley Clark, Tom & Robin Eldhardt, Marshall & Sharon Hauck, Jan & Mara Jackson, Blaine & Bev McGillicuddy and William & Emilia Sperry. The party started at 7:00 P.M. and at about 9:45 I looked at my watch and discovered it was nearly night night time. We hadn t really made much of a dent in the chocolate and wine, but we covered a lot of ground conversationally. I think we could have talked till the wee hours of morning. Thank you to Rick and Janet for hosting this event. I ll be there next year God willing and if the creek doesn t rise. Submitted by Jan Jackson

4 Garry Bryan Memorial Long-time member and past president, Garry Bryan, passed away on February 7, Garry was always willing to volunteer for offices that needed filling. Garry was very active in the Columbia Basin Model A Club. He was president of our club three times plus our treasurer. Garry was a scientist, mechanic, father, grandfather, craftsman, fisherman and generally a great human being. He will be missed by all of our members. Our condolences to the family and especially to his beautiful bride Joanne. She shared her love and her car with Garry.

5 Dinner & a Play - Friday, March 23 A No Host Dinner will be held at Sterling s Restaurant at Queensgate, 2500 Queensgate Drive in Richland. Dinner reservation is set for 5:30 p.m. The play: And The Winner Is put on by the Richland Players at the Richland Players Theater (608 The Parkway, Richland). The play begins promptly at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults/$12 for those 65 and older. A Registration Form for this event will be ed/mailed to you the first week of March. Copies will also be available at our March Club meeting on March 8th. If you wish to join us for this evening of culture, good food and fellowship, please fill out the Reservation Form, enclose your check for the number of play tickets you need, and mail the bottom portion of the Reservation Form with your check to the Haucks 906 N. Pittsburgh Street Kennewick, WA ASAP. Deadline: Must have your reservation form and check by Thursday, March 15, Any questions? Just call Marshall and Sharon at Information about the play And The Winner Is A comedy by Mitch Albom. This comic story tells of Tyler Johnes, a self-obsessed movie star, who is finally nominated for an Oscar, then dies the night before the awards. Outraged at his bad luck and determined to know if he wins (even though he is dead), he bargains with a heavenly gatekeeper to return to earth for the big night. Along the way, he drags his agent, his acting rival, his bombshell girlfriend and his ex-wife into the journey, in a wildly twisting tale of Hollywood, the afterlife, and how we are judged. Submitted by Marshall & Sharon Hauck Polo Shirts for Sale After an appropriate amount of procrastination, Mara and I drove to the silk screen shop to find out about the polo shirts. If we order more than 12 shirts we can have the shirts silk screened, if it s under 12 shirts we ll have them embroidered. Both white and Maui Blue are available in the same style as our last shirt order. Here are the stats: Mens & Womens sizes are available in S-6XL. Embroidered shirts are $30 each. Mens & Womens sizes are available in S-6XL. Silk screened shirts are $27 each, if we order more than 12. So, it turns out there isn t much difference in costs between silk screen and embroidery. If everyone who wants a shirt either because you don t have one, or your old shirts are needing to be replaced, please me your size and color selection by Friday, March 23. I will order the shirts and have them before we leave for Reno (let the good times roll). Submitted by Jan Jackson The purpose of the club shall be to serve as a medium of exchange of ideas, information and parts for admirers of the Model A Ford, and to aid them in their efforts to restore and preserve the car in its original likeness. Membership in the Model A Ford Club of America is a requirement to joining the Columbia Basin Chapter. To join MAFCA, see the web site at < and click on the Join MAFCA tab. Requirements for membership in the chapter shall not insist upon the actual possession of a Model A Ford, merely an interest in the objectives of the club and a desire to take an active part in club activities shall be the primary requirement for membership. (Excerpt from Columbia Basin Model A Club Bylaws dated February 2015.)

6 Fashion Feature Fashions of the Model A Ford Era Fashion 101 McCall Printed Pattern # 5328 is an example of the dress patterns available for the Model A era seamstress. They exhibit the flair from the flapper era a few years earlier with a hint of showing the knee beneath the sculpted bottom hem line. A smooth front or stylish double cut top could be worn with or without a belt. Submitted by Robin Eldhardt True or False? The Service Brake pedal in all vehicles actuates the Service brake shoes located inside the front and rear brake drums. Vehicles are designed to make a sharper right hand turn than a left hand turn, since at intersections making a right hand turn is sharper. Occasionally riding the Brakes (foot resting on pedal) when driving your vehicle will keep the Brake shoes dry in wet weather. The first generators were known/called Powerhouses because they looked like a generator found in a Dam. The Starter push rod pushes the shaft mounted Bendix unit into the Flywheel teeth. The standard gear ratio found on most cars is 3.78:1. There are 14 Cylinder Head studs and nuts. ANSWERS: TRUE The Service Brake has a rod to both Front and Rear brake cams which operate the brake shoes. FALSE The Spindle pin lock nut stops the wheels from turning to far. The nut hits the back of the Spindle plate. FALSE Resting your foot on the Brake Pedal will overheat and wear out the brake shoes. TRUE The first Generators looked a lot like generators found in Dam Powerhouses. FALSE The rod is used to close the Starter Switch contacts to activate the windings inside of the Starter which spins the armature causing the Bendix to spin out and engage the Flywheel teeth, turning over the engine so it can be started. TRUE The standard gear ratio was 3.78:1 for most cars. Some open cars had 3.54:1 high speed ratios and most trucks had 4.11:1 low speed ratios. TRUE There are a total of 14 studs/nuts needed to keep the head gasket from leaking water. There are 12 studs used in the piston cylinder area and 2 studs are used in the water outlet flange area. 7 Restoration Projects Model A Ford Repair & Restoration Body Blocks Having problems with the Body Blocks in your vehicle being loose, having dry rot or just falling apart. The Body Blocks are made of a hard wood and are sold in sets for a specific year and body style. These Body Blocks hold the Body above the Splash Shields and are form fitted to the Sub-frame of the vehicle they are designed to fit. The fabric belt and the rubber pads are used to help prevent squeaks. To ease in the mounting and alignment of the Body Blocks, the rectangular rubber pads are pre-attached to the bottoms with a nail or tack. The positioning of the material layers used to mount a body on the frame is listed below. Refer to the comprehensive drawing below for material/parts placement. All of the possible Body Blocks available are shown in the drawing. A fabric belt is placed on top of the side frames. It is about 1-1/2 2 wide. Holes need punched/drilled through the fabric belt where the Body Blocks will be placed. The Splash Shields/Dust Aprons are placed onto the top of the fabric. The wooden Body Blocks with the attached rubber pads on their bottom are next. The Body is then placed on top of the Body Block. Tools Needed: Socket set, a hole-punch set or a drill and drill bits, a hammer and 1/2 & 9/16 end wrenches. Parts Needed: A Body Block set designed for your vehicle, a set of rectangular rubber pads and a set of round cowl pads for alignment. A set of body specific mounting bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts. Body Block Removal/Replacement: UNBOLT/REMOVE the Body to frame mounting bolts, washers and nuts. UNBOLT/REMOVE the Floorboards. UNBOLT/REMOVE the Steering column lower mounting screws and bracket. DISCONNECT the Throttle Control rod from the Carburetor. DISCONNECT the fuel line from the Sediment Bulb or Carburetor. REMOVE the rear mounted Spare Tire, if installed. PLACE wooden blocks under the body in several places, as lifting points. JACK the Body up a few inches to access the Body Blocks for removal. REMOVE the old Body Blocks and rubber pads, as needed. Note location and block shape. INSTALL the new/replacement Body blocks in reverse order of the above steps. Body, Door and Cowl alignment: A trial and error method is used to align the Body, Doors and Cowl so everything fits correctly. LOOSEN the Body mounting bolts. PLACE additional rectangular rubber pads to raise/align the Body and Doors, as needed. PLACE round rubber pads under the front Cowl area to raise/align the Cowl, as needed. TIGHTEN the Body mounting bolts tight. REPEAT the previous steps until proper alignment is attained. Submitted by Tom Eldhardt

For the last few years we have gotten several requests for more interactive displays. At Model A Day 2017 we introduced, How to Start a Model A. It has become very popular for young and old alike, for those who remember when, for those who have no idea and everyone in between. Thanks to Joe Hornacek and Ken Ehrenhofer for making this happen. Please pencil in the (MAFFI) 2018 Model A Day on September 15th in your calendar and make your plans now to attend. You won t be sorry! We also added a PayPal button to our web page which makes it much easier to order merchandise, pay for MAFFI membership and order memorial bricks. 9 March 8, 2018 Meeting Minutes The monthly meeting was brought to order by the president Larry Campbell. Those attending were Pete and Grace Jackson, Jan and Mara Jackson, Blaine and Bev McGillicuddy, Bruce and Shelley Clark, Tom and Robin Eldhardt, Marshall and Sharon Hauck, William and Emilia Sperry, Sue Campbell, Mike and Linda Porter and Rick and Janet Budzeck. In reverence for Garry Bryan, who passed away on the morning of February 7, 2018, a moment of silence was observed. Since there was no meeting in January due to health issues with members, the minutes from the December meeting were approved with a motion. The treasurer s report was provided by Janet. Correspondence: Mara received an information flyer from Specialty Motor Cars in Wisconsin, a business that sells Model A parts. Sunshine: Bev thanked those who sent her get well cards after her knee replacement surgery and she sent a get well card to Garry. She stated that as soon as information is available with regard to Garry s funeral, that information will be ed to club members. Mara reiterated this comment. Tours: Marshall passed out copies of the tour schedule for 2018 and highlighted areas of interest. He commented leaders and/or tour ideas are welcome and needed. The Chocolate & Wine Extravaganza will be at the home of Rick and Janet on Friday, February 16, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Please bring a favorite chocolate dish to share and wine if you want. Punch, water and coffee will be provided. Old Business: Larry wondered if members had any ideas on a new community service option. Mara suggested that when members attend a meeting they could bring a canned food or non-perishable item to be donated to a local food bank. After discussing the suggestion, it was decided this would be a great new project. It was determined the host/hostess for each particular meeting would be responsible for taking the donated food items to a local food bank. Janet volunteered to contact the Reata Springs Baptist Church to see if they are a food bank and, if so, would take the items. Larry commented there are several members who do not have the white polo shirts with the club logo on them. Jan remarked the cost is higher when only a few shirts are ordered. It was decided those members who need a white polo will purchase one and then give it to Jan so he can have the embroidered logo added. (See updated information on this subject, page 5) New Business: Janet shared that in response to the letter the club received concerning our failure to file for our non-exempt status, she contacted their personal CPA, who filed the form for In order to retain our non-exempt status, this form must be filed each year. This fact will be shared with each new treasurer to make sure this is completed. Larry commented our club needed to elect a new treasurer unless Janet wanted to be secretary/treasurer, to which Bev stated that would be too much to ask one person to do. Blaine volunteered to take over this responsibility. A motion was made, seconded and passed electing Blaine as treasurer for Larry remarked he thought it would be fun to have members share a story that has happened to them with their Model A. For this meeting, Marshall shared his experience driving his Model A back to college in Moscow, Idaho from Portland, Oregon in January. Needless to say, he experienced lots of snow and wind, as well as being pulled over by a state policeman in The Dalles wondering why he was driving a Model A in that kind of weather. Fortunately, Marshall made it back to college, although it did take him a good portion of the day. Projects: Rick shared that an individual, who is restoring a Model A, came over to look at his 1931 Slant Window and took several pictures of the upholstery so he would have some reference when doing that portion of the project. Larry mentioned Randy Bunch has a 1928 Tudor for sale and Pete stated his door is for sale. Appreciation was extended to Larry and Sue for providing refreshments for the evening. With no further business, a motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn the meeting. Respectfully submitted by Janet Budzeck, Secretary
