The weather is just right for touring, all the different events and activities are up and running and you generally are ahead of all the vacationers. I figure the Walla Walla Sweet A s really knew what they were doing when they planned their Regional Meet in June. Speaking of the NW Regional meet, it s not too late to sign up. The registration documents can be found on line, and hotel info is there also. I just took a good look at this year s regional meet activities and there really is something for everyone beginning with the classic events, i.e., car judging, fashion judging, seminars, Hubley races, grand tours, etc. In addition, the Walla Walla A s have outlined additional individual tours for smaller groups to do on their own directions included! Don t forget to visit a few of the famous local wineries. It was really good to see such a great turnout this past month for both Dinner and a Play and our tour of the new WSU Wine Science Center. It is good to be able to go to quality theater right here in the Tri-Cities. Barefoot in the Park was an excellent production. The continued expansion of the educational opportunities right here in our community that specifically support our local industries, i.e., wine production, etc. is a very positive move supporting the growth of this region. Well, let s get those cars out and get touring! Marshall Hauck Ladies Lunch The June Ladies Lunch will be held at The Country Gentleman Restaurant on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 12:30 p.m. The restaurant is located at 9221 West Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick.

Tri-Tech Tour Sixteen Columbia Basin Model A Club members met at Tri-Tech in an effort to learn more about their programs. Assistant Director Lisa McKinney led the tour which included stops in the following departments: Law Enforcement, Culinary, Radio, Television, Automotive, Automotive Repair, Dental Hygiene. Members attending included: Garry Bryan, Budzecks, Eldhardts, Mary Fraser, Haucks, Hinksons, J Jacksons, P Jacksons and Osterwyks. Frank and Laura s daughter, Bev, works in the Dental Hygiene section of the school and gave us a brief overview. Overall, it was very informative. The school is part of the curriculum for eight high schools in the region. All of the programs are free of charge and earn college credits which can be transferred to colleges offering AA degrees in the respective vocations. After we finished the tour we had a brief and unscheduled meeting and then headed to Applebee s for lunch. Thank you to the Osterwyk s for suggesting this tour. Car Games Trial Run The next regularly scheduled meeting will be on June 11th and we will be practicing the car games we volunteered to co-host for the Walla Walla Sweet A s at the NW Regional Model A Meet. The Yakima club is helping us co-host this event. Mara and I have a bumpy ride lined up with huge plastic margarita glasses full of water. Tom and Robin have fabricated Model A tires to accept rapidly descending onions. These will be timed events and a lot of fun. Bring your cars to the meeting so we can alter the rules of the games, if needed.

WSU-TC WINE CENTER TOUR A group of 17 individuals met at Rick and Janet s home early Friday morning before setting out for a tour of the new Washington State University Wine Science Center in North Richland. The group consisted of Gary and Joanne Bryan, Rick and Janet Budzeck, Tom and Robin Eldhardt, Mary Fraser, Dean and Teri Hinkson, Marshall and Sharon Hauck, Jan and Mara Jackson, Blaine and Bev McGillicuddy and Frank and Laura Osterwyk. The caravan of cars consisted of five Model A s and three moderns. We drove the back road on Harris to the WSU campus and parked at the new center, where we were met by our tour leader Erica Holmes, who is the Communications Coordinator for the university. The 40,000 square foot Wine Science Center is a state-ofthe-art research and teaching facility in viticulture and enology. The center provides hands-on opportunities for learners interested in degrees and professional certificates in grape growing and wine production, which is a fast growing industry in the state. We were told there are over 850 wineries in the State of Washington and the numbers are increasing. When the Wine Science Center opens for students this fall, they hope to have on display a bottle of wine representing each winery in the state. The Wine Science Center was built on property donated by the Port of Benton on the corner of George Washington Way and 1st Street. The Washington State Wine Commission and local wineries pitched in to help pay the $23 million it cost to build this marvelous facility. Following the Wine Science Center tour, we had a little time to waste so we stopped at the Triton Sail. Thank you to Jan for getting the key from the Port of Benton and showing the inside of the sail to those who were interested. From there, the group proceeded to That Place for a delicious lunch and lively conversation. Submitted by Rick Budzeck Frank Osterwyk Best of Show Frank Osterwyk won best in show with his nice 1930 Ford Model A Coupe at the URock Car Show on May 16th. Floyd s Model A Parts Under New Ownership Floyd s has been sold to Amanda Uthe in Vancouver, WA. The new name will be Rusty Lugs Rods & A s She will have a website < and will accept credit cards. You can call (which happens to be Floyds old number) or , Rustylugparts@gmail.com. Amanda will be the parts vendor at the NWRM so if you want her to bring anything special call her right away.

Fashion Feature Fashions of the Model A Ford Era. This month we are looking into the fashions of the McCall Printed Pattern #5829 for The bib front type overalls with cross strap back pieces are both fashionable and utilitarian. The addition of front pockets makes a statement and are useful for holding small items and thusly eliminate the need for a purse. The two-button collared blouse can be made with short sleeves for warmer weather or with long sleeves for blustery days. A color coordinated hat finishes off the ensemble. 6 Restoration Projects Submitted by Tom Eldhardt Shock Absorbers Inspection/Cleaning The second article in this series will cover the Inspection and Cleaning of Shock Absorbers. The first set of articles was about The History of the Model A Ford, the second series contained articles on How It Works and this third group of articles will be about Restoration projects. Last month s article about Disassembling the Shock Absorber appeared as a How It Works but should have been listed as the first article in the new Restoration series. BASIC PARTS See previous article How It works Part 13 Shocks for information. TOOLS NEEDED Small probes/picks (similar to what a dentist might use), wire brushes, bead blaster and scrapers to remove dried up fluid (glycerine) and/or rust particles. HELPFUL HINT - If parts do not come apart easily then heating them with a torch or heating the whole Shock Absorber in a charcoal BBQ pit for several hours has been proven to loosen up and break old shocks apart, especially the Lock Ring, Outer Cover, Inner Cover and Needle Valve assembly. Another method is soaking the Shock Absorber in a bath of a 50/50 mixture of Acetone and Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for several days. INSPECTION/CLEANING 1. Clean all of the parts: Base, Outer Cover, Lock Ring, Inner Cover, movable Wing Shaft, and Needle Valve assembly to remove rust, dried up fluid, etc., using small probes/picks, wire brushes, bead blasting, and scraping, as needed. 2. Check the bottom surface of the Base and the wings on the removable Wing Shaft where they interface and the top surface of the wings on the Wing Shaft and inside of the Inner Cover where they interface. NOTE: There is a tight fit between the bottom of the Wing Shaft wings and the Base and the top of the Wing Shaft wings and the Inner cover to prevent fluid flowing around the moveable wings instead of through the Base wing check valves. 3. Base - Examine all of the parts for defects and damage, and inspect and verify that the two internal check valve balls located in the Base wings move easily and that they operate properly i.e., that they would stop flow of the fluid in only one direction. Blow out with air as needed. 4. Moveable Wing Shaft Check the Needle Valve Assembly of the shaft. These parts must fit together tight/ snug or the assembly adjustment nut will not be able to regulate/set the pressure. Check the fit of the outside of the shaft and the hole in the inner cover. 5. Inner Cover - Verify the two Air Vent holes are open and the Replenishing Valve check valve are operating correctly. Blow out with air as needed. 6. Outside Cover - Check for wear where the rubber seal fits on the outside of the moveable Wing Shaft and the inside of the Outer Cover center hole. NOTE: If the moveable Wing Shaft flops around inside the Inner Cover hole it is probably worn out and will not give a good seal to prevent leakage when the Shock Absorber is reassembled. The shaft on the Wing Shaft would need to be machined down and a bushing added to remove the slop. Base Stationary wings and Moveable Wing Shaft (Note check ball holes in the Stationary Wings, the hole in the Moveable Wing Shaft and the threaded area for the Inner and Outer Covers) Moveable Wing Shaft Fill Plug Needle Valve Assembly

Happy 45th Anniversary Tour & Photo Opportunity On June 5th, the Columbia Basin Model A Club will celebrate its 45th anniversary as a chapter of the Model A Ford Club of America. We will meet at our normal second Thursday meeting place, Reata Springs Baptist Church 2830 Leopold Lane Richland, WA, and leave promptly at 10:30 am. We will wind our way up Clodfelter to Locust Grove Road, hang a left and then catch the Bofer Canyon Road. When we get to the bottom of the hill, I will bail out of the Model A and trudge up the hill looking for a suitable photography vantage point while keeping an eye out for rattlesnakes. At this point, Mara will lead the Model A s up Bofer Canyon hill, make a 180 turn near the top and then creep back down the hill while I shout instructions via the walkie talkies. If this all goes well I will submit the photo and article to The Restorer for possible inclusion in a future publication. Bring your Model A s and as many walkie talkies you can find. After the photo shoot we will amble back to Kennewick and have lunch at The Rock. Submitted by Jan Jackson MAFCA News May/June Restorer: The May/June issue of The Restorer has been mailed out. Youth Scholarship Award: MAFCA is pleased to offer its financial support and encourages both members and chapters to also support this great program for our Model A youth, either through fund raisers, memorials or individual donations. The Model A Ford Youth Scholarship Fund, Inc. was established as a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization to assist children and/or grandchildren of any MAFCA/MARC member in pursuing their undergraduate education, whether it be a state university, college or technical school. The scholarships awarded are for up to four years. The funds come from financial contributions and various fundraising efforts from MAFCA/ MARC members and chapters. Applications for this year s award were due by May 15. For more information, and to download the application package, see the Youth Scholarship Page on the MAFCA web site. Information obtained from the MAFCA web site The purpose of the club shall be to serve as a medium of exchange of ideas, information and parts for admirers of the Model A Ford, and to aid them in their efforts to restore and preserve the car in its original likeness. Membership in the Model A Ford Club of America is a requirement to joining the Columbia Basin Chapter. To join MAFCA, see the web site at < and click on the Join MAFCA tab. Requirements for membership in the chapter shall not insist upon the actual possession of a Model A Ford, merely an interest in the objectives of the club and a desire to take an active part in club activities shall be the primary requirement for membership. (Excerpt from Columbia Basin Model A Club Bylaws dated February 2015.)

Meeting Minutes May 14, 2015 Prior to the beginning of the meeting, club members met outside and enjoyed a demonstration by Drex Gaunt and his son, Steven, of the drone they use to monitor the crops grown on their farm. Drex also shared information about the drone and its capabilities. Following the demonstration, the monthly Model A Club meeting was brought to order by president, Marshall Hauck and attended by Garry and Joanne Bryan, Tom and Robin Eldhardt, Frank and Laura Osterwyk, Sharon Hauck, Mary Fraser, Rick and Janet Budzeck, Pete and Grace Jackson, Blaine and Bev McGillicuddy, Calvin and Vernita Coffey and Jan and Mara Jackson. Marshall introduced guests Larry and Sue Campbell, prospective purchasers of a Model A. The minutes from the April meeting were approved with a motion and the treasurer s report was provided by Vernita. Correspondence: Mara shared the following correspondence she received: (a) thank you from the Walla Walla Club for the Chukar Cherry basket donated by our club for the upcoming regional meet; (b) registration form for the Benton Franklin Fair Parade set for August 22nd, which Mara will complete and return; (c) registration form for the July 4th parade in Pasco; (d) MAFCA certificate honoring our club for being a Charter Chapter for 45 years; (e) letter from Rick Black informing our club of the national awards banquet in Medford, Oregon set for December 2-5***; and (f) letter from John Carlile, president of the Northwest Regional Group, concerning future regional meets. ***Those interested in attending this event will find a registration form in the July/August issue of The Restorer. The MAFCA certificate will be given to Tom, who volunteered to be our club s historian and relieve Pete of this task, which he has faithfully performed for many years. In response to the letter from the Northwest Regional Group, Marshall asked for a volunteer to attend the meeting, which will take place at the upcoming meet in Walla Walla. In response to this request, Jan offered to represent our club. Tours: Jan provided details on the following tours: Friday, May 22nd - meet at Rick and Janet s home at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. tour of the new Washington State University Wine Center, followed by lunch at 11:30 a.m. at That Place Friday, June 5th - meet at the Reata Springs Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. and follow Jan and Mara to the site he has chosen for a photo shoot, which he will send to The Restorer in recognition of our club s 45th year as a MAFCA chapter June Regional Meet in Walla Walla September tour to Enterprise and Joseph, Oregon New Business: Mary stated she brought the books Fred had on Model A s and asked club members to take any they wanted. Those books that are left will be taken to the regional meet for those who might want them. Joanne suggested that since the coffee and tea in the club s goodie box are not being used that they be donated to someone who would use them. Members were encouraged to think about this and a decision would be made at the next meeting. Announcements: Marshall recognized those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries and thanked Pete and Grace for providing the refreshments. Projects: Blaine commented his Roadster s gas gauge is now working, thanks to Jan, and he now has a working wiper, thanks to Rick. Visitors: Larry and Sue Campbell visited the club and are actively seeking a good running Model A Fordor. A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn the meeting. Respectfully submitted by Janet Budzeck, Secretary
