Since the train was the main source of shipping freight from Edmonton, eager residents would gather at the station when they knew that goods were coming in and buy them off of the train.

In this photograph Franklin Avenue is a dirt road and there is a man standing in the center of it. Down the left side was the New Franklin Hotel with a car in the front. The next building is Sutherland s Pharmacy. Mr. D.G. Sutherland was standing and A.M. Sutherland was sitting outside of Sutherland s Pharmacy.

12 June 2012 Credit: Fort McMurray Historical Society FORT MCMURRAY : 1948 The MV Radium Yellowknife in the Clearwater River after it was launched off of the slipways at The Prairie shipyard. The MV Radium Yellowknife was built in Fort McMurray for the Northern Transportation Company Limited and then brought over the portage to be used on the MacKenzie River. The Fort McMurray Historical Society is currently building a Marine Park where the shipyards were located in the Prairie section of Fort McMurray.

Draper was the end of the railway line in 1921, giving it the title End of Steel. In 1923 the train was moved slightly closer to Fort McMurray, and ended in Waterways.

During this period Waterways had a number of major industries, such as McInnes Products Corporation Limited, the Hudson Bay Company, and Industrial Minerals Company. These companies were strategically placed by both the railway and a major shipyard.
