Early activity began in the area when the False Creek Road was created in 1860. Mt. Pleasant was intersected by a large salmon stream named Brewery Creek.

In 1858, the gold rush sent pioneers to the area and the New Westminster trail (now Kingsway) became the primary access route to the area.

Pleasant Area since European settlement is quite recent. For the past 10,000 years, the natural ecology of the Mt. Pleasant slopes were a rich resource for First Nations People. Early activity began in the area when the False Creek Road was created in Mt. Pleasant was intersected by a large salmon stream named Brewery Creek. Later a street called Main Street followed the same route as the Creek up the hill. In 1858, the gold rush sent pioneers to the area and the New Westminster trail (now Kingsway) became the primary access route to the area. Edward Stamp dammed Brewery Creek (8th and Sophie) in order to run water to his mill across False Creek. In 1872 a bridge over False Creek attracted residents to the wilderness of Mount Pleasant. The area was named by a resident to honor her Irish birthplace and thus Mount Pleasant was born. In 1888 Powell named the streets in the area after the map of Canada with all north south streets named after provinces. By the 1890 s the intersections of Kingsway, 7th Ave and Main Street became the centre hub of Vancouver s first suburb. In the 1900 s CPR extended a rail line along the south shore of False Creek and regular streetcar service to the area made transportation easy. By 1908, the streetcar stop at Main and Broadway created one of the busiest intersections of the city. Of particular interest, the lane east of Main Street between 9th and 16th avenue called Watson street was a lane that residences fronted directly on. This pedestrian-friendly street provided a quiet alternative to Main Street. Brewery Creek, in conjunction with the connecting routes of Main and Kingsway, became the centre of industry and commercialism for the district of Mt. Pleasant. By 1897, there was a substantial population growth centered on Broadway and Main Street. The ability to commute to the City Centre and the industries of Brewery Creek and False Creek provided the draw for many working families that now populated the area below Broadway. In a sense, Mount Pleasant can be called Vancouver s first suburb. The earliest recorded history of the property dates to 1901 when a brewery was located on the site. After this the site was used as a used car dealership from 1931 on. In the 1930 s, industrial expansion north of Broadway resulted in the demolition of many homes. In the mid-1900 s the population of ethnic Japanese Canadians in the area had grown to almost 10% of the Mt. Pleasant population, but with the Japanese internment of WWII sadly this ethnic diversity was lost for a time. Throughout the 1950 s and 60 s, many remaining houses in the area disappeared and more industries, low-rise offices and warehouses moved in. The Mount Pleasant I-1 area in the northwest quadrant of Mount Pleasant, formerly a residential neighborhood, has approximately 100 residential buildings in the area, representative of the original pre-1960 development pattern. Many of the existing homes are of heritage merit and the dwellings remaining in the area do so in peaceful co-existence with industry. As of 2006, Mt. Pleasant has 23,615 people, a 3.8% decrease from % of the population is under the age of 19; 44.8% is between 20 and 39; 33.4% is between 40 and 64; and 8.2% is 65 or older. 62.0% of Mt. Pleasant residents speak English as a first language, 10.0% speak a Chinese language, and 5.1% speak Tagalog. The median household income is $37,782, and 31.7% of its population lives in low-income households. Its unemployment rate is 5.5%. As a crossroads community between east and west Vancouver, Mt. Pleasant is evolving into one of the most vibrant communities in Vancouver. The area presents a diversity and mix that is particularly dear to the Owner of the proposed project. Mr. Amir Virani founded JB Coffee as a family business in 1973 at the corner of Main Street and 29th. As a tribute to the area that supported his entrepreneurial spirit, his attention has returned to the area to make a significant contribution to the community where he made his first Vancouver home. In 2009, Amir and his family launched a Charitable Foundation called Kids at Risk. The Foundation funds programs for British Columbian children that are economically, socially or emotionally challenged. One of the organizations we support is the Boys & Girls Club in Mount Pleasant.
