3 Around the Creek Message from the Editor By Pam Garbin Wow it seems like the summer is flying by! One month left of the kiddies at home. Make sure to check out the RMWB Programs being offered out here in Saprae Creek, events occurs on Thursdays at the park in August so check out the schedule in this issue for more information. It was nice to see some action at the skateboard park in terms of the Landscaping occurring around the area. At last notice we have not seen more action due to poor soil conditions and the fear that trees will not take. Also drainage issues also need to be fixed. I have heard that we can expect to see Placemaking occur sometime in August as the final plans have been approved and a contractor awarded the contract. Cannot wait to see how it all turns out. I am looking forward to the return of some Saprae Creek activities in September, we have set the date for our Fall Community Clean up & Skateboard Park Fun Day, hopefully you can join us September 15th and come out and enjoy a great afternoon of fun.

4 Councillor s Corner The lazy, hazy days of summer are here. Having a lot of fun identifying and fighting off all the insects that are coming and going in droves, packs, swarms, whatever it is insects travel in. Now I hear from June Leclair that we ve got some caterpillars/worms to look out for as well. Although Council is now on summer hiatus, (I know, it s a soft job, we get six weeks off in the summer!), it is pretty clear that the RMWB is out there doing a lot of things. There is quite a buzz downtown about all the land that is being assembled, bought and sold as plans fall into place for many developments that are going to be proceeding over the next couple of years. Mark my words, you will be impressed with City Centre McMurray, the building of a new urban core that will make us a northern leader. We ve lost the Oil Can, but the new arena, convention centre, city hall, arts and cultural building, development of the Snye into an accessible recreation area linked to Waterways by a contiguous trail and parkland along the Clearwater, yes these things will make it easier to do without the Oil Can. Soon the press will not be able to spin a negative story out of anything they see in this municipality. Our last council meeting before summer break on July 10 th was quite extraordinary really. We swore in our two new councillors, we passed the MacDonald Island capital addition plan, signed off on the Area Structure Plan for Saline Creek, closed the road allowance for the old airport road as well as attending to some other more mundane duties. As a person who grew up in Thunder Bay, I can tell you that our councils back there did not get to do that much in a year, never mind one night. The $127 million Mac Island expansion has a fixed price guarantee and will be ready for the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games that will mark a milestone in the development of this region as all of Western Canada will visit and take home their story about our wonderful region. Worried about spending that amount of money? On a property tax basis it amounts to $1.25 a year per urban resident in residential taxes. As you may know if you follow the money, less than 5% of the RMWB s revenue comes from urban residential taxation.the oil companies, as they should, pay the vast majority of the taxes in this municipality (about 90% of the tax revenue comes from the oil companies) and we, the citizen use that money for things that make our life better. I was at a cocktail party the other day with the Board of Directors of Suncor; they were here on their bi-yearly visit to Fort McMurray. The cozy little event was held at Mac Island and I can tell you without exception every one of those Suncor people I talked to said how pleased they were to have been able to contribute to the development of Mac Island into a world class venue. Everyone who brings someone to town, be it a family visitor or someone you re trying to hire, takes their visitors to MacIsland, and usually it is the first place a visitor is taken. Saline Creek Plateau, well, that is going to be our next neighbourhood, albeit a pretty big neighbourhood. Having exclusively low density residential housing, this bedroom community will house 20,000 peoplefive to seven years from now. The Rotarians are building a championship quality golf course as kind of a geographic buffer between the residences and the airport; I cannot wait to play there as their plans make it look like a fabulous layout with plenty of water hazards. The truth is, all of us are helping build a modern twenty-first century sustainable city and region that will be held out in the future as a remarkable achievement of the people who came and stayed and made it happen. Special shout out to Dennis and Wes and Dr. Gilbert for helping us put down and bury Tammie s horse Frosty. A sad thing to have to do and Wes your humanity in performing the role of gravedigger was much appreciated. The whole thing gave Tammie and me a real feeling of belonging to our great little community. Thanks so much. We have acquired a new horse to take Frosty s place, his name is Sampson and he is big, black and beautiful, our first thoroughbred. Enjoy your summer and I ll be back in September previewing our fall council agenda. Thx, Al Vinni
