1 Community Newsletter Week of September 24-28, 2018 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. City Administration staff attended the 104 Annual ICMA (International City/County Manager Association) Conference in Baltimore Maryland this week. The conference featured noteworthy keynote speakers such as bestselling Author Daniel Pink, Historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns along with Thought Leader and Business Consultant Greg Bell and New York Times Best Selling Author Wes Moore. In addition, there were numerous workshops with experts from the field. This conference is a chance for those working in local government to re-energize and get new strategies to enhance their communities. The above picture includes Assistant to the City Manager/HR Director Ernestor De La Rosa, who received the ICMA Diversity Scholarship. City Manager Cherise Tieben and Assistant City Manager Melissa McCoy received scholarships from Black Hills Energy to attend the conference. 2. The Know Your Rights Presentation featuring Cesar Moreno Perez, Associate Director with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Human Rights and Community Relations Department in Washington D.C. and Natasha Quiroga, Director and Senior Counsel with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights shared information on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programs and also informed community members on ways to assist friends and neighbors that are from immigrant populations. The presentation was hosted by Dodge City Public Schools and the Community Relations Advisory Board. 3. Three main breaks occurred the week of September 24th; the first occurred Monday on Robinson and Sunflower, the second occurred Tuesday on Central and Plaza, and the third happened on Wednesday on Woodland. All breaks were due to pressure and were exposed and repaired on the same day.
2 4. The streets department continued construction at Eisenhower Park and three concrete pads were installed on the east side for vendors to set up for future events. Construction will continue next week. 5. Tenants at the Historic Depot received training from expert Barb Straight on the history of the Depot building. Her presentation included information on the building renovations that took place during the early years and information on Fred Harvey and the Harvey girls. Those in attendance have a better understanding of the history so when visitors come to the building, we ll have some additional information to share with them. Thank you Barb Straight. 6. Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) staff have completed and submitted the True West Magazine - Top Ten True West Town s application. The application shares the town s contributions to preserving its old west Heritage ( ). The CVB believes that our community holds such pride towards our town s western heritage that this award would be a great honor. The True West s winner will be featured in the magazine s February issue in Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau Historical Trolley Tour season has ended for the year. The Trolley will be used for Final Friday Shuttle in September and October and is still available for rental throughout the year. 8. The Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau hosted the annual Dodge City booth at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson Kansas. This year the Dodge City CVB booth received a Longevity Award and ribbon for 20 consecutive years! An enormous thank you goes out to all the volunteers that gave of their time to make this year such a success. The Get the Heck into Dodge package has been selected. The winner is from Topeka, KS. We d like to recognize our community partners that contributed to the package; Hampton Inn & Suites-Dodge City, Boot Hill Museum, The Depot Theater Company, Roundup Rodeo Association, and the Boot Hill Casino and Resort. 9. Starting October 22nd, Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremiah Proberts will be joining the Dodge City Police Department Detective Bureau. He will spend one year with them to be trained on major case investigations. He is still employed by the KHP, just working with the DCPD. This program is in place all over Kansas with other agencies doing the same including Garden City, Wichita, and Junction City, to name few. 10. Contractors began pouring the concrete for the mainline of the 1700 block of Central Avenue on Friday and will continue concrete work for this block next week.
3 11. High Plains Public Radio invites the public to attend an open house celebrating their new partnership with Dodge City Community College and KONQ. For event details see the attached invitation flyer along with their new schedule. 12. SCAM ALERT! It has been brought to our attention that some residents have received text messages claiming to be From the City of Dodge City stating that the person s sewer system is failing regulatory conditions. This is not from the City and is a scam. Please do not reply to the number. As of this post, we are only aware of the text messages coming from a number with a 786 area code. If you receive messages from this number or similar messages from a different number please notify the Dodge City Police Department AND info@dodgecity.org so we can be aware. 13. Election Day is just over a month away. For important dates and location information see the attatched flyer.
