1 Community Newsletter For the week December 18 22, 2017 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. City Hall, Municipal Court and Convention & Visitors Bureau offices will be closed on Monday, Dec. 25 and Monday, January 1 for the holidays. All services will be open on the eve holidays. Sanitation services for Dodge City customers on the Monday route will be serviced on Tuesday for both weeks. Make sure that polycarts are placed at the curb by 7:00 am and all trash bagged and securely tied. CREW will be closed Saturday December 23, Monday Dec 25 and Monday January 1 all other days will operate as normal; however, the 24-hour bins for drop-off at the recycle center and Civic Center are always available. As a note, gift boxes and wrapping paper are accepted for recycling. Public transportation services will close at 1:00 pm on December 22 and 29 and will also be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. The location to dispose of real Christmas trees is just east of the dog park in Wright Park. All decorations, tinsel, stands and plastic covers must be removed. 2. A recap of the Dec. 18 City Commission meeting: a. A presentation was made by Fire Chief Robert Heinz for Fire Shift A in recognition of their actions in saving lives at a house fire on 1st Ave. b. Adopted Ordinance No issuing General Obligation Refunding Bonds, Series 2017-B, providing funds to refund a portion of the City s outstanding G.O. bonds. c. Adopted Resolution No directing the sale and delivery of General Obligation Refunding Bonds, Series 2017-B. d. Adopted Ordinance No authorizing the creation of the Sutherlands High Plains LLC Community Improvement District (CID). e. New Business i. Approved the appointment of Michael Martinez to fill a vacant position on the Library Board and appointed Commissioner Jan Scoggins to the Santa Fe Trail Solid Waste Advisory Board. ii. Voted 2-3 not to approve the early retirement policy as submitted but directed staff to discuss further and bring back to the Commission after their further review. iii. Approved the amendments and revisions to the FOP memorandum of understanding after lengthy discussion at a 6:30 pm executive session. iv. Approved the bid from Hydro Resources of Garden City for the rehabilitation of municipal water wells No. 21 and 29 in the amount of $92,000. v. Approved the bid from KGT for a Jacobsen LF 570 fairway mower in the amount of $52,411. vi. Approved the bid from Denton Construction for the installation of fencing at St. Mary Soccer Complex in the amount of $74, vii. Authorized the City to enter into a letter of intent with Casey s for Lot #1 at the NW corner of 14th & Soule and authorized staff to proceed with working with Dodge Partners LLC on the proposal for Lots 2 and 3. On Tuesday of this week, representatives of the City of Dodge City, Dodge City Community College and Victory Electric participated in on-line training that will enable them to respond and offer assistance to the Public Information Officer in the event of a disaster. The IS-100.B course is an introduction to the Incident Command System. IS- 200.b is training on single resources and initial action incidents. IS-700.A is an introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS). All three courses are required and provide the basic knowledge needed to understand the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of responding to disasters. The participants all passed the testing requirements to be certified. The group of local information specialists will continue to meet routinely and further their emergency preparedness skills. 4. Purple Wave Auction is selling for City of Dodge City several vehicles including: a 2006 Buick Rendezvous, several mowers (including John Deere and Grasshopper), several pickup trucks (including a 2001 Ram quad cab and a 1996 Ford 250 XL). These items will be sold by Purple Wave (via the website) to the highest bidders. The auction closes January 9th, The items can be viewed and bid on at around the 1st of January. Troy Robertson dresses up every year and stands in for Santa at Willroad Gardens School. 6. Ernestor De La Rosa, Interim HR Director and Melissa McCoy, Assistant to the City Manager presented on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) at the Rotary International Club last Monday, December 18th. The presentation was an overview of DACA and its current status. Members of the Rotary Club had lots of questions on the program. 8. The streets department removed and replaced concrete at Soule between 1st and 6th due to buckling caused by temperature changes. 9. Cemetery staff would like to give a reminder that the winter holiday season to decorate graves at Maple Grove Cemetery is from December 1st to January 1st. Temporary decorations are also allowed three days prior and six days following the date of birth and date of passing. Decorations should be placed around the headstone as close to the foundation as possible. The use of glass jars, bottles, tin cans, etc. for receptacles for flowers is prohibited. Beginning January 8th, cemetery staff will begin to remove the temporary decorations and anyone wanting to keep the decorations should collect them by January 8th. Any questions can be directed to cemetery staff at Holidays hours where staff will not be working are December 25 and January The Dodge City Daily Globe announced the winner of the First Annual Holiday Light Contest today. The contest was sponsored and put together by the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Dodge City Daily Globe. The first year of this contest had an impressive 39 entries which were judged on Sunday, December 17th. The CVB put together a map based on the Holiday Lights Contest entries and reports from others, of the great neighborhoods to drive through during this holiday season. Read up on the winners from the contest at At Monday s Commission Meeting Dodge City Fire Department Chief Robert Heinz and Deputy Chief Ken Spencer recognized A Shift Captain Brian Hudson, Engineers Aaron Pyle & Scott Wadley, Firefighters Brian Green, Andrew Kintner, Robert Montes, Richard Hartman & Ian Deges for their life saving actions on November, 18th 2017 where 5 occupants were saved from an apartment fire at 1103 First Ave. On November, 18th 2017 DCFD A Shift was dispatched to a report of smoke in a structure at 1103 First Ave. While in route to the call dispatch advised that someone was on the roof of the structure. When crews arrived on scene they found smoke to be coming from the windows of the apartment building with one person on the roof trying to avoid the smoke. They immediately laddered the roof and helped that person down and began the process of searching the structure for more occupants. On the second floor of the structure they found a subject in a hallway and directed him out of the structure. They also found a family of four, a father and three young children still in an apartment. Firefighters brought the children and their father through the increasingly dense smoke to the first floor exit and to safety. They then spent the next few hours working to save the structure and the occupant s possessions. While the structure may be a loss many of the occupant s possessions were saved do to the hard work of these men.

She teaches Social Media Marketing, Marketing Management, Marketing Strategy, and Database Marketing. Prior to joining the faculty at FHSU, Dr. Martin was co-founder of a strategic that offered clients marketing plans, marketing research, organizational strategy, business plans, and e-business seminars. Prior to that, she was Director of Marketing for a company that produced interior decorative coatings for aircraft. While there, she developed Web-driven and traditional marketing strategies, including Web site promotion, design, construction, and maintenance. Dr. Martin was previously a member of the graduate faculty of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) and Winthrop University. Her research interests include e-business, the effects of advertising on children, and innovative teaching strategies. This interactive workshop will teach participants how to make their Facebook page excel at driving traffic and increasing engagement. We will look at what Facebook can help you accomplish and how to get followers to your Facebook page. You will learn how to create and curate creative content that will resonate with your target audience. Finally, you will use Facebook Page Insights to identify your best content and be more cost-effective and efficient with your Facebook marketing. This workshop requires the use of a laptop computer.
