1 Award Essay for Innovative programming: ASM Chennai Chapter ASM Chennai chapter has well established practices in the area of technical programming to attract professionals from industries for the exclusive Training programs organized on regular basis which in turn generates constant demand from leading industries practicing metallurgy to avail our exclusive services for mutual benefit. We at Chennai chapter continuously try for innovative methods of training to benefit the participants and to create an interest in them, year after year on regular basis. This year we have introduced two innovative programs.the first one being a 3 day certificate course on Practical Metallography which was well appreciated and it was repeated within two months time to cater to the demands of the aspiring participants from the industry. The second program tailored for 4 days as a certificate course on heat treatment for shop floor operators in local language was a great success. This has prompted Tube investments Ltd, one of the leading industrial houses to request us to offer the same to their employees of various units in the junior level on heat treatment processes specific to their activities. Prior to the programme a team of faculty members from ASM Chennai visited their plants to understand their specific requirements and the syllabus was framed to suit their specific needs. This course was planned during the weekends for 6 weeks which include the visits to their heat treatment units to explain practically on the last day. The course completion certificates were issued after the evaluation. Similarly a leading industrial house TAFE,has recognized ASM Chennai chapter as their channel partner for training their employees once a year for 3 years on Metallurgy and Heat treatment. Similar request from Lucas TVS, a leading auto ancillary unit has materialized and one In-course on heat treatment has already been conducted for their employees. We do plan interesting technical talks for the benefit of the members for which topics and speakers are drawn out of focus on practical and innovative needs of the industries and research bodies. This has created a specific interest in members to participate and we get a participation of 30 members minimum for all the technical talks. Apart from these innovative events are planned and executed for the materials advantage chapters by the respective heads to ignite the minds of the future. INTERNATIONAL HEAT TREATMENT AND SURFACE ENGINEERING CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION WAS CONCEIVED AND ORGANISED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN CHENNAI DURING MAY TH SIX TECHNICAL COURSES ON (METALLOGRAOHY,QUENCHING,INDUCTION HEATING,NANO TECHNOLOGY,SURFACE ENGG,CASE HARDENING )WERE ORGANISED AS PRE AND POST CONFERENCE COURSES HANDLED BY FOREIGN FACULTY MEMBERS AND ATTENDED BY MORE THAN 300 DELEGATES.THERE WERE MORE THAN 300 DELEGATES PARTICIPATED IN CONFERENCE WITH MORE THAN 1000 VISITORS ATTENDING OVER 50 EXHIBITORS WHICH INCLUDE 6 OVERSEAS PARTCIPATION.ONE EACH FROM UK, JAPAN,ITALY AND THREE FROM GERMANY.REST ARE FROM

5 International Conference & Exhibition on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (HT&SE 2013) 16 to 18 May 2013, Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai, India SUMMARY Inaugurated in the Year 1985, ASM International Chennai Chapter, has been striving to serve the metallurgical and materials community in the country, which involves industry, academia and R&D labs. ASM International has more than 36,000 members worldwide. The activities of the Chennai Chapter have been recognized by the Head Quarters with the Prestigious Chapter Excellence Award for the year , the First Award of its kind given to a Chapter outside the USA. The Chennai Chapter has continued to get Five Star Awards for the last 11 years. ASM International Chennai Chapter ORGANISED India's First International Conference & Exhibition on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (HT&SE 2013) from 16 to 18 May 2013 at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai, India. The event was supported by International Federation of Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE). The series 27th Surface Modification Technologies (SMT 27) conference was integrated with HT & SE 2013 to bring together both heat treatment and surface engineering community together in one common platform. Several eminent professionals in the field delivered plenary and invited talks in the conference on various topics of high relevance today: Dr. Paul Stratton, Matscribe, UK; Dr. Zoltán Kolozsvary, SC Plasmaterm SA, Romania; Dr. T.S. Sudarshan, Materials Modification Inc., USA; Dr. George F. Vander Voort, Consultant Struers Inc., USA; Dr. Scott MacKenzie, Houghton International, USA; Mr. M. Narayana Rao, MIDHANI, India; Dr. Per Nylen, University West, Sweden; Dr. G. Sundararajan, ARCI, India. About 20 specialists in the field of heat treatment and surface engineering delivered invited talks, and 70 presentations were made by delegates attending HT&SE An 'Industry Forum' chaired by Dr. Robert Wood, Secretary General, IFHTSE, and a 'Panel Discussion' chaired by Dr. Baldev Raj, President, INAE & IIW were aslo part of HT&SE Companies of global reputation from India and international supported the event as sponsors, and several companies/organizations exhibited their products and processes in an unique layout of 50 stalls which added value to the theme of the conference. About 350 delegates attended both conference and exhibition during May 16-18, 2013 from USA, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China, Italy, Romania, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Singapore, and India. The HT&SE 2013 was inaugurated by Dr. Prabhat Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director, BHAVINI, Kalpakkam in the presence of Mr. S. Gopinath, Executive Director, Thirumayam & Piping Centre of BHEL, Chennai, the Guest of Honour who releaseed the Souvenir and CD Proceedings. Mr. V.L. Sridharan, Chairman welcomed the gathering, Dr. T.S. Sudarshan, Chairman, SMT presided over, Dr. U. Kamachi Mudali, Convener-Conference spoke about HTSE conference while Mr. Sampathkumar, Convener-Exhibition spoke about HTSE exhibition, and Mr. B.K.
