KARRATHA WATER POLO ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT SEASON KWPA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SEASON Page 1 of 18
PRESIDENT WRAP What a season it has been for Karratha Water Polo! Our accomplishments are something to be so proud of; here are just a few of them: Hosts of the 2015 Australian Country Water Polo Championships; The creation of a third men s club the King Bay Krakens; The enormous success of Flippa Ball; Increase in membership by 40%. Taking out WA Water Polo Sports Club of the Year and then the City of Karratha s FUTURECLUBS Sporting Association of the Year; We also won the titles of Sportsman (Justin Angove) and Sportswoman of the Year (Alex Dobbin); And to top this all off we still have the 2016 State Country Championships to host right here in Karratha next water polo season in March We definitely showed up to play and had huge success at the State Country Championships held in Bunbury. Last year neither men nor women s sides won a game, this year Karratha Marlins Men finished equal second, just narrowly missing out on the Grand Final. The women also put in an awesome effort and won a number of games and showed that we are a force to be reckoned with. Look out next year! Big congratulations to the following people that were named in the A sides for WA State Country: Men: Richard Gregory, Nigel Kroonstuiver, Rhys Knight and Justin Angove Women: Kate Kalajzich and Anouska Angove The following people were also named in the second sides for WA State Country: Men: Byron Newbold, Mason Watts, Reserves: David Rigby, Richard Clarke, Haydon Linn and Aaron Day Women: Alex Dobbin and Sandra Morris Rhys and Anouska were also named in the All Stars Team for the tournament and Gary Vincent was named the assistant coach of the WA Country Women s Side. As previously mentioned Flippa Ball was a huge success this season. We had over 60 kids show up each week on a Sunday for eight weeks and have been inundated with queries about when it s starting again. Thank you to Nigel and Amy Kroonstuiver and Alex Dobbin as well and everyone else that was involved in making our junior competition a success. Flippa Ball will commence again in Term if you are able to assist at all please make this known to Nigel or Alex. This season we had a new men s team start up The King Bay Krakens. It has been so great to see our club grow to three men s team. There was a fair amount of sooking about playing 2 games when the fixtures were released but by the 3rd round it was everyone s preference to play two games rather than one and this is testament to how well we did in Bunbury. Next season we need to see more clubs develop and hopefully a Women s Krakens Team. Who is up for the challenge? Page 2 of 18
This season s grand finals were played with passion, spirit and a level that would match any state country water polo level. Commiserations to Pirate women who put in a great effort and congrats to Barracudas who played a fantastic team game and just proved too strong on the night. Barracuda Men what do I say? It was an awesome hard fought game that we have become used to. All season it has been two and fro and to be honest Cuddas had the wood over the Pirates the last 8 weeks, thankyou for the fight and again commiserations. We Pirates know exactly how you feel. Pirates Men congratulations! We definitely showed up to play and win at this year s grand final! Thanks again to Colin Wedd and Richard Gregory for refereeing both matches. Its passionate people like you that enable water polo to grow and be played in the spirit of good sportsmanship. I would like to thank the club representatives, Nigel Kroonstuiver (Barracudas), David Rigby (Pirates) and Byron Newbold (Krakens) for their efforts and support throughout the season. This role is sometimes (or maybe always will be) a thankless task but without someone to rally the troops when required life becomes hard for all. A massive thank you to this year s Executive Committee: PRESIDENT: Justin Angove REGISTRAR: Aaron Day VICE PRESIDENT: Alex Dobbin SECRETARY: Anouska Angove TREASURER: Adey Richards These people put in truckloads of hours behind the scenes to make our Association a success. It s their dedication and support that puts us in the position that we are in now and has seen us achieve so many awards in such a short period of time. I know the sacrifices and the impact these roles have on family time. It s like taking on another full time job for 8 months of the year. But I truly thankyou all and I m sure all the players and spectators thankyou for making Water Polo the sport of choice in the Pilbara A big thanks to all the other volunteers who do all the little things to make this Association so fantastic. We always need more volunteers so please don t be afraid to step up next season to ease the workload. Finally let s not forget about our sponsors, without the financial support from these generous businesses, life would become a lot harder for all members and players. I would like to thank the following sponsors for their ongoing support of KWPA, particularly this season: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF SPONSORS FOR SEASON PILBARA PORTS AUTHORITY CITY OF KARRATHA KARRATHA RSL METALCOM MOBILE CONCRETING SOLUTIONS KARRATHA LEISUREPLEX DEPARTMENT OF SPORT AND REC WATER POLO WA INC. 5 AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY MEN S TEAM - JUSTIN ANGOVE HAWAIIAN INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT AUGUST 2014 The question is often asked when you return from a tournament about what you learned about the game? To be honest, playing water polo for 30 years there isn t much I haven t seen, but the biggest take away for me is the people I meet and the ongoing networks and relationships that I developed. Water polo is a small sport in relation to the number of participants and any opportunity to meet keen and devoted people to this sport that will help to maintain and grow water polo is where I give and get the most out of tournaments such as this. Sharing this wealth of knowledge is far easier when seen in real life. This is why I m so dedicated to bringing such elite Referees, Coaches and Tournaments to Karratha so everyone then has the opportunity to share these experiences I have been so fortunate to experience firsthand. My next challenge is to bring this great game of water polo at its highest level to the Karratha Leisureplex and expose the Association and spectators to a level of water polo that many would not have seen in our great City of Karratha. As well as hosting the greatest National Championships ever I m dedicated to assisting my fellow team mates from KWPA to have the greatest opportunity in getting not only selected in the Western Australian State teams but to go on and get selected in the Australian Country Water Polo Teams. There is no better experience than to play at this elite level in front of your home town and give new starters, juniors and those potential future players an insight into what the elite level of water polo has to offer. I would like to thank all those who supported me in attending the 2014 Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament both financially and to those that offered their support at my training sessions in the middle of winter. I thankyou: Karratha Water Polo Association Inc. City Of Karratha RSL Karratha Leisureplex Justin Angove Page 5 of 18
KWPA CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS KWPA s current Constitution and By-laws were recently reviewed by Susan Grylls (Legal Counsel & KWPA Member) and no major anomalies or inconsistencies between the two documents were identified. Many thanks to Susan for undertaking this onerous task. KWPA s Constitution and By-laws can be ed upon request to any KWPA member by contacting a member of the Executive Committee. Both documents will soon also be made available via our webpage. Page 6 of 18
FLIPPA BALL Co-ordinators: Alex Dobbin and Nigel Kroonstuiver In our first year of running a Flippa Ball Water Polo Program for juniors, KWPA received outstanding reviews and feedback from participants and parents. The under 8 s averaged 35 participants each week and the under 12 s averaged 25 participants. Participants could pay a fee of $40 up front via Sporting Pulse or pay $5 for each session they attended. The program focused on skills e.g. throwing one hand, catch two, shooting, defending, and swimming with the ball tailored to each age group. Lessons and courses each week were an adaptation from the Flippa Ball Official Manual and Program. At the end of the program each participant was awarded with a certificate and bag of goodies (mini towel, stickers, pens etc.) For season we will be expanding the program to go over two school terms (Term and Term ) and add an afterschool timeslot for the under 18 age group. A big thanks to the KWPA members who turned up each Sunday morning to help out with the Flippa Ball sessions. It is hoped to have the same number of volunteers and more this coming season to assist with the sessions, particularly with Under 8 s who need a lot of supervision and learn better when broken up into smaller groups. 8 AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS TOURNAMENT WRAP 31 st March to 4 th April 2015 The National Water Polo Country Championships was a week-long tournament where male and female teams from NSW, QLD, the Australian Defence Force and Western Australia battled it out in the water at the new Karratha Leisureplex. And what an awesome week of water polo it was. Those competitors are now all officially as tough as the Pilbara after playing in extreme conditions of heat, humidity and sunshine & glare. These events cannot happen without volunteers and would like to acknowledge and thank the following volunteers for their efforts throughout the tournament: EVENT OFFICALS Tournament Director: Justin Angove Technical Director: Gary Payne Tournament Volunteers Aaron Day Rhianna Day Justin Angove Anouska Angove Jess Newbold Byron Newbold Angus Armstrong Adam Nicholas Ken Redmond Tristan Lynn Alex Dobbin Rhys Wilkinson Cody Scott Luke Caldwell Adey Richards Nigel Kroonstuiver Amy Kroonstuiver Sally Linn Haydon Linn Gary Vincent Craig Bourke Donna Stace Michael Bushell Dan Pedersen Natalie Glover Levi Harris Richard Clarke Gary Coleman Paul Richardson We would also like to acknowledge and thank the referees who attended this tournament: o Gary Payne Technical Director o Russell McKinnon Referee and Media Liaison o Fiona Haigh o Phil Scales o Mark Ridgwell o Mike Defina Page 8 of 18
This tournament would not have been possible without sponsorship and we would like to make a special mention of the Pilbara Ports Authority for their generous donation to this event and extend our gratitude to the following businesses and organisations for their generosity and support: o Pilbara Ports Authority o City Of Karratha o Auspole Sports o Duratec o Mobile Concreting Solutions o Pilbara Holiday Parks Aspen The following is a list of media reports that were done on the tournament: ABC NorthWest Radio Interview with Justin Angove, Kylie English and Elisha Browne (4 th April 2015) GWN7 News Article: A new water polo hotspot set for the Pilbara (8 May 2015) Daily posts on the Australian Country Water Polo Website: The Australian Country Championships hosted by Karratha Water Polo for 2015 was considered a tremendous success and overall the tournament ran extremely smoothly. Feedback we received from the players/managers/coaches/officials who attended was extremely positive and the letter provided by the CEO of Water Polo WA (page 11) is testament to this. The sale of tournament t-shirts was not as successful or profitable as KWPA had hoped and adjustments will be made to the merchandise ordered and sold at the State Country Water Polo Championships in February next year. KWPA was pleased with the profit made from the sale of alcohol and food and will endeavour to mimic these sales at next year s tournament. KWPA was delighted with the level of involvement from its members and the hours of volunteer time put in by many contributed to the success of the tournament. Page 9 of 18

TREASURER S REPORT Karratha Water Polo Association (KWPA) engaged RSM Bird Cameron Chartered Accountants to carry out our financial review for the season. It should be noted that this was a 14 month period, (1/5/ /06/2015), whereas the season review was a 10 month period (1/07/ /04/2014) and hence the season review will be a 12 month period (1/07/ /06/2016). KWPA s second season ( ) saw us receive over $39,000 in sponsorship. This included a very generous $20,000 from the Pilbara Port Authority to help us run the Australian Country Water Polo Championships. KWPA s membership greatly increased this season and hence we collected over $18,000 in player fees, compared to around $10,000 last season. We had 72 fully paid members in our senior competition, approximately 20 more than last season. The commencement of Flippa Ball and many casual players also helped to boost our fee income. KWPA have carried out large amounts of fundraising to help boost our association funds as well as support our participation in the State Country Championships in Bunbury and hold the Australian Country Championships in Karratha. These include the Op Shop ball, game night food & bar, merchandise, food & bar sales at State and Australian Championships, raffles and salt bagging. Major expenses for the year have included new equipment (balls & caps), insurance and purchase of uniforms/merchandise. KWPA have a large amount of uniforms in stock and we will be aiming to recoup some of the costs in the coming season. KWPA have over $42,000 available for the 2015/16 season. This is an increase of over $20,000 from last season. In the opinion of RSM Bird Cameron Chartered Accountants the financial report fairly presents the financial position of the Karratha Water Polo Association and of its financial performance for the year. The Income Statement and Balance Sheet prepared by our accountant follows this report. The full financial report will be made available to members at the 2015 AGM or upon request in the future.
