4 4 CHAIRMAN S NOTES The 2008 Annual General Meeting will be held at the Queensland Club on Friday 21 November 2008 in conjunction with the Annual Dinner. This venue proved very popular last year so book early to avoid disappointment. Your State Branch Committee comes up for election and all members have fulfilled their duties admirably during At the national level, the Board has developed a number of planning initiatives that will see an ongoing focus on looking after our members and looking after our communities. There have also been a number of strategies implemented to improve the corporate governance of our Association and to ensure it s on going compliance as a Public Company Limited by Guarantee. The year to date has been a busy one with functions at regional and state level very well supported by our members. Of particular note was the attendance of over 200 members and guests at the Bundaberg regional function in August where special guest Jonathon Welch of the Choir of Hard Knocks fame enthralled the members with his talent and his anecdotes about those doing it tough in our society. The Queens Birthday 2008 Honours list recognised another group of special Queenslanders who were each invested with their Order of Australia at Government House on the 3 and 5 September 2008, by Her Excellency, our new Governor of Queensland Ms Penelope Wensley AO. On Friday 5 September, immediately following the Investures, the Association held the customary Reception for the Recipients of the Order at the Parliamentary Annex. My sincere congratulations go to all of those new recipients. I again remind you all the Queensland Branch is hosting the Association s 2009 National Conference in Brisbane on and 21 February Bookings are coming in at a steady rate and already specific events are proving very popular. The Organising Committee and the OzAccom Group are working very hard to ensure that the Conference is a memorable experience for our visiting dignitaries and for you, our members. Please book now so that you are sure to be there. The 2009 National Conference in Queensland will coincide with the Q150 celebrations, i.e. 150 years of Queensland as a self-governing state. The Queensland Branch has been awarded a Q150 Grant in support of the OAA National Conference which will be a significant event in the Q150 celebrations. Recently, on Monday 8 September 2008, Her Excellency, the Governor of Queensland Ms Penelope Wensley AO presented the Order of Australia Association Queensland Branch Secondary School Citizenship Awards to 12 people on the threshold of adulthood who already have some remarkable achievements to their credit. For me personally these awards are always an inspiring event on our calendar. Our sincere thanks go to Klaus Bremhorst AM and Dina Browne AO and the judges for their work behind the scenes and to Mr Peter Honeycombe of the Honeycombes Property Group the sponsor of these Awards. Peter Blatch OAM and Ross Dwyer OAM are also busy planning the 2008 Primary School Citizenship Awards to be held on Monday 20 October 2008 at the Parliamentary Annex. Many of you have heard me promote the Order of Australia Association Foundation at state and regional functions. We have invited the secretary of the Foundation, Professor Brian O Keeffe AO to come to Brisbane to give us a first-hand insight into the Foundation at the Annual Dinner. Of particular interest will be the profiles of recent winners of Foundation Bursaries that Brian will share with us. Your participation helps us make membership of your association an enjoyable experience. Please continue to support the functions that your fellow members work so hard to provide for you. Mick DAVIS AM Chairman The Order of Australia Association (Qld Rockhampton Branch Members of the Order of Australia attended the Blue Care Awareness Dinner in June; their guest speaker was the then Governor of Queensland and our Patron, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce AO. Twelve members attended, and I would like to join with Her Excellency who thanked them for attending and commented that it was nice to see our members wearing their medals. Her Excellency extended an invitation to any member who may be in Canberra after she commences as Governor-General to visit her. We had the pleasure of Mick Davis AM, Queensland Chairman of the Order of Australia Association, as our guest at the September luncheon. Mick spoke about the Order of Australia Foundation, Scholarships for Secondary Schools, the Order of Australia Association National Conference which is being held in Brisbane next year, and the Primary School Awards. Our Guest Speaker for the luncheon was Eric Anderson OAM. Eric is Manager of City Printing Works, a business established by his grandfather in 1903 and still owned by himself and his son Warwick, a fourth generation of Anderson. cont d pge 6
5 5 Townsville Region Annual Dinner The Townsville Region held its Annual Dinner on Friday, 19th September 2008, at the Townsville Branch of the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL). As usual the RSL was most generous with their support and their arrangements. Dinner commenced with a Minute's Silence to remember all those who have contributed to making this such a wonderful, free country, especially those in the Order and those who have passed on. We then sang the first verse of Advance Australia Fair, toasted the Queen and the Order. Our Banner and the Australian Flag were prominently displayed. Our numbers were down on last year's attendance, primarily due to some members being on holidays and several others had moved south. Then on the very day, the flu hit Townsville and, unfortunately, six more people had to withdraw. Nevertheless we had 31 members and 20 spouses/partners/guests attend. We welcomed Colin Pace, who had been awarded the Medal of the Order (OAM) in this year's New Year's Honours and Awards List, and his wife, Gladys. Unfortunately, our other recent recipient of the OAM, Val Tuckett, was one of those who went to bed with the flu. Her husband, Michael, had travelled all the way up from Sarina (400 klms) to attend the dinner with Val. Hopefully they will attend next year's dinner. Paul Stevenson, OAM, from the State Committee, was our Guest Speaker. Paul's trip to Townsville was a saga by itself what with plane delays and lost/stolen property. Anyhow Paul persevered and gave the guests a great briefing on what the State was doing. He also was an excellent "salesman", encouraging us all to attend the 2009 Conference. We suggested that a conference should be held in Townsville in the future. Everyone appeared to have a great night. The meal was great and the company superb and many left reluctantly. Unfortunately no official photographs were taken, something that we will correct at next year's dinner. We thank the RSL for their ongoing support and we also thank Paul Stevenson for coming all the way up to Townsville. Now we can look forward to the 2009 Dinner. Neil Weekes, AM, MC Convenor The Bundaberg Regional Group The Bundaberg Regional Group staged a very successful luncheon on Saturday 9th August at the Brother s Sports Club. man Dina Browne AO, State Chairman Mick Davis AM, Mayor of the Bundaberg Regional Council Lorraine Pyefinch and Catholic Bishop of Rockhampton Diocese Most Reverend Brian Heenan DD. The day began with all singing the National Anthem led by Jo Jonathan Welch and Bishop Heenan Carr, a former pupil of Jonathon s. Bishop Heenan offered a prayer and said grace. Lorraine Pyefinch extended a welcome to everyone; some had travelled more than 200 kilometres to attend. After the main course the convenor, Kevin Gould OAM gave a brief report on Association matters including the death of two recipients both of which had local streets named in their honour. He advised that the next social event will be held on Saturday 22 November in Mundubbera. He thanked three generous sponsors and the committee members who assisted in organising the event, with special thanks to his wife Marjorie for her help and for being the one who suggested Jonathon Welch be invited. Mick Davis AM addressed the gathering on state matters, with emphasis on the next National Conference to be held in Brisbane early next year. After desert Kevin introduced Jonathon who then delivered a thought provoking address, telling of his connection with the Choir of Hard Knocks which he founded with 50 of the marginalised from the streets of Melbourne just two years ago. Clips were shown on the screen of the choir at practice, places where some slept on the cement floor of a portico of a church in Melbourne s CBD and other shabby shelters and some of the individual choir members. Jonathon led all in a sing-song of four popular numbers and concluded with a beautiful rendition of The Impossible Dream. Being the finest tenor in Australia it was a joy to all. Bill Reedman AM presented Jonathon with a keeper box, fashioned from local timber by a local wood artist. On the underside of the lid was affixed a plaque expressing appreciation and bearing the logo of the Association. Dina Browne AO congratulated the Branch for staging such a wonderful event and thanked all for their support. Dina also thanked Jonathon for his great effort in what he is doing and wished him well for the future. Jonathan Welch was guest speaker and entertainer. A capacity crowd of 230 attended including National Chair- Kevin Gould OAM then presented Jonathon with a cheque for $3000 to assist in his charitable work of encouraging and supporting the marginalised.
