1 Bulletin Volume 85 No 57 September Rotary Club of Sale Rotary District 9820 Incorporated Each month for the next year our Club will be publishing in the weekly bulletin a motto encouraging our members to be better people in all things we do. And each month is tagged with related theme: September Loyalty To honour commitments between family, workplace and community. Last Meeting: Guest speaker: Monty Olsen The Future of ESSO in Gippsland Chair: Alan Lewis Sergeant: Leo O Brien Chairman Alan Lewis introduces Esso s Gippsland manager Monte Olsen. After a thirty year career with Exxon, Esso Gippsland Area General Manager Monte Olsen has spent his last 18 months in Australia. Prior to this Monte has played leading roles, especially in start-up ventures in countries including South Korea, Nigeria and Angola. Monte is married to Pam and has three children with two grandchildren in Huston. They are living in Wurruk and are very keen to continue living a working in Australia for a long time.
2 Monte informed us that this year marks the 50 th anniversary of Esso exploration for gas and oil in Gippsland and celebrations are planned to mark this special occasion. Within 5 years of commencing exploration, gas was being produced at the Longford plant which is a very fast start up time and a credit to the workers of that time. Whilst initially exploring for oil, vast amounts of gas were also discovered. Oil reserves are quickly dwindling but large new gas reserves are available and a new plant is being planned. This will be a billion dollar investment with gas supplies to reach 40% more than current levels. The demand for gas is great with Longford supplying 100% of Gas to Tasmania, 70% for Victoria and 30% for N.S.W.. Monte is very proud of the fact that Esso Gippsland is a training ground for Australian employees whose knowledge and expertise is exploited throughout the Esso world. He is also proud of their safety record with Esso receiving a recent major safety award. During question time, Monte addressed the issue of the 1998 explosion at the plant and commented on the anniversary of this sad event which is next Thursday. A ceremony is planned to mark the event in the memorial garden established soon after the disaster. Monte also commented on the ability of the new plant to remove mercury from the new gas reserves which contain more mercury than the current supply. The new gas should be online in 2016 and will offset the current decline in supply. Acting president Laurie thanks Monte and members discuss the issues after the presentation. Next Meeting: 29 September: Liz Sheat Job Talk Chair: Carmel Webb Sergeant: Leo O Brien N.B. This week s meeting and the next three will be held at The Sale RSL (the old Men s Club 14 York St). Phone with guests or apologies. Adrian announces that Liz Sheat will present a job talk next meeting
3 Announcements: Acting President Laurie: Then 3 weeks at the RSL: 29/9, 6/10 & 13/10 Contact detail in Bulletin Return to IBIS 20 th October, 2014 DG s Visit. Sat & Sunday 11 & 12 Oct: Portsea Camp- Interested? Members may arrive at Portsea and depart when they wish? See Laurie Ebola virus emergency. sent to members needs to be considered for potential action. EBOLA VIRUS THREATENS BO HOSPITAL GENEROUS DONATIONS ARE UGENTLY SOUGHT TO FINANCE AN ISOLATION WARD Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd has a registered project in Bo, Sierra Leone (No. 46/ sponsored by the Rotary Club of Turramurra) whose aim is to build and extend the Bo Children s Hospital and to provide hygiene and basic health care and education. The hospital now has a need of the highest order to provide an isolation ward. A quarantine ward has been on the project list for some time but now it is not an overstatement to say it is a matter of life and death. They need to raise $40,000 As we are all aware the Ebola virus is highly contagious between humans and has no known cure. The latest information available from Sierra Leone Government Ministry of Health (as at August 29th, 2014) is that the country has recorded 1033 cases with 383 deaths (including 140 health workers), and additional suspected cases. In the nearby town of Kenema which is only one hour s drive from Bo, there has been 173 reported deaths and an additional 64 cases in isolation, and now sadly, Bo which has been free of any cases to date, has now incurred six deaths. The Avenues of Service Forums is fast approaching to be held on Sunday 5th October at Federation University CHURCHILL campus. David Tulloch: Warm-up Show, upcoming event: The Club has committed to providing and erecting its marquee at the Gippsland Warm-Up Show, Sale Showground, on Sunday, October 12. Street barbecue: The Board has approved a practical idea on taking Rotary "into the community" in a novel way. In Summer, in lieu of Monday dinner meeting, we'll be running a free "kerbside barbecue" for some 30 or 40 families in a selected Sale court/street. Awards: The third round of the 10-year $10,000 young equestrian encouragement awards ($1000 annually) is near.
