The cost of free education $500,000 A survey conducted by the Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) exposed the cost of school education in Australia, revealing what parents can expect to pay to put their children through either a government, Catholic or independent school. Parents sending their child to a public primary school will face costs of around $3,000 a year and approximately $4,455 per year for a public secondary school. The cost increases significantly if they choose the Catholic or private school route. These figures vary from state to state, and between metropolitan and regional schools. In addition to tuition fees, the quoted amounts include predicted expenses for extras such as uniforms, extracurricular activities and transport. In some public primary schools, parents are being asked to purchase their children tablets or laptops to assist with their learning experiences. Here in Queensland, assuming that a child remains in public schooling from Prep through to Year 12, ASG states it will cost a family over $58,000 for each child s schooling alone, never mind the normal day to day expenses of raising a child. $450,000 $400,000 $350,000 $300,000 $250,000 $200,000 $150,000 $100,000 $50,000 Our Response The impact of these education costs have been reflected in our grant applications as, increasingly, more and more low income, even average income, families are finding it hard to keep up with these expenses. To this end, Inclusive Kids will focus, in the short term at least, on Education. Inclusive Kids will also enter into an agreement with the Push Productions Print Shop social enterprise to supply school based print resources (e.g. notebooks, school diaries, pens), at a negligible cost to be passed on free of charge to local schools for their discretionary use. 2 Message from our Funds Manager My wages, the wages of my staff and our operational costs are met in full by IFYS Ltd and our Inclusive Kids Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay motor vehicle is generously loaned to us by the Crick Auto Group on the Sunshine Coast. Clint Lovell Welcome to the first newsletter for Now operating in Cairns, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay, I m sure it will be another busy and exciting year for the Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund. Funds Manager As most people are aware, our income is generated primarily through the support of over 290 individual shopkeepers and café owners throughout Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay placing our colourful coin boxes, *featuring BarRat and Jess from 91.9 Sea FM Sunshine Coast, on their counters. This popular Morning Show duo are our IK brand ambassadors and their cheeky Put a coin in the slot exhortation encourages everyone in our wider communities to drop their spare change into our boxes. Between October and December 2016 (our last quarter) we received $92,000 worth of applications, with only $17,000 donated over the same period. There are many families with desperate needs in our communities, and my team and I can only continue to encourage you all, when you see our coin box on a bakery, fish and chip shop or café counter, to please drop a coin in the slot! *BarRat and Jess only feature on our Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Coin Boxes For those of you who are new to our fund, it is important to remember that the Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund donates 100% of all monies raised back to the Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay communities through our small grants. No administration fee is taken from the funds received.

3 In recognition of our Sponsors donations Bakers Delight organises special Christmas Lights Sausage Sizzles in aid of the Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund Special sausage sizzles were held over two evenings in December, at the home of Ryan and Emme Kirkham in Peregian Springs on the Sunshine Coast, raising almost $2,000. Ryan is franchisee of the Kawana and Maroochydore Bakers Delight stores. Bakers Delight sponsored the events as a contribution to the Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund. Ryan is well known for his amazing Christmas Lights Displays and 2016 was not a disappointment Sea FM, Kiwi Daddys Sunshine Coast, Rhi Rhi s Face Painting and Ryan s neighbours (selling treats) were also there supporting both evenings. The sausage sizzles, cake stalls and face painting attracted hundreds of children and adults, and from all reports everyone had a great time. The family friendly events ran from 6.30pm to 9.30pm which wasn t too late for the young children who came along particularly to see the remarkable lights display. The Funds Manager, Clint Lovell, offers warm thanks to Ryan and Emme for inviting the general public into their home and their gesture of support to the Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund. Sunshine Coast Community Telco gifts $5000 to Inclusive Kids Sunshine Coast Community Telco Chairman and former Police Inspector, Ron Strong, is proud to say his organisation has always been committed to giving back to needy people on the Sunshine Coast and this has been the hallmark feature of the company since their arrival on the coast. Tony Pignata, Managing Director of IFYS Ltd, and Clint Lovell, Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund Manager, gratefully accepted the $5,000 donation which will provide much needed resources to the fund. The Telco donation will add a valuable cash injection to this initiative and could be used to purchase communication equipment for children who may be non-verbal, mobility aids for children who are unable to walk or fund speech therapy for children who have difficulty communicating. In the last quarter to December 2016 alone, the fund received over $90,000 in requests for assistance and this considerable donation from Sunshine Coast Community Telco will go a long way to assisting the Sunshine Coast Community. 7 What is Inclusive Kids? Freecall: The Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund is an important initiative of Integrated Family and Youth Service (IFYS Ltd), a non-government, community based organisation that, in its various manifestations, has operated across Queensland for over 30 years, providing a range of specialist support and intervention programs for children, young people and families. The Inclusive Kids Community Fund aims to assist disadvantaged children by providing small grants to assist with their day to day care or to purchase items that will create better inclusion in community life for these children. This Grants Fund is open to individuals aged 0 18 years, who live in one of the various areas in which the Grants Fund operates. We believe the grants we make are an investment, not only in the future of the individual, but in the future of their communities as a whole. IFYS sees that the Inclusive Kids Community Fund complements the giving nature of our employee-driven contributions and our community fundraising initiatives.
