GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE TOURIST GUIDE LICENSING EXAMINATION

1 APPLICATION FOR TOURIST GUIDE LICENCE Prior to granting an applicant a Tourist Guide licence, STB requires the applicant to have (a) attained the 3 Statements of Attainment (3 SOA), and (b) passed STB s Tourist Guide Licensing Examinations. STB will not allow an applicant to sit for the Tourist Guide Licensing Examinations unless the applicant has attained the 3 SOAs. You may choose to : 1. Attend a Tourist Guide Course and obtain 3 Statements of Attainment (SOAs) prior to registering for the STB s Tourist Guide Licensing Examinations; OR 2. Obtain the 3 SOAs under the Assessment Only Pathway (AOP)* prior to registering for the STB s Tourist Guide Licensing Examinations Successful applicants will be issued with a tourist guide licence. The licence fee is $72 and is renewable every 3 years. GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE TOURIST GUIDE LICENSING EXAMINATION 1. Applicants are now able to perform Online Registration and Payment for the Tourist Guide Theory and Practical Examination at this website With the launch of the Online Registration system, all walk-in registrations will instead be referred to the website. 2. Only applicants who have passed the theory examination may register for the practical examination. 3. Applicants would receive a confirmation regarding the allocated examination dates and venue upon successful registration and payment of the tourist guide examinations. The theory examination fee is $53.50 and the practical examination fee is $ (including 7% GST). 4. Except as provided below in Point 5, examination fees, once paid, are non-refundable. 5. STB reserves the right not to accept an application to sit for the examinations without having to give any reasons. If an applicant is rejected, the examination fees paid will be refunded in full, without any interest. STB s decision is final and no correspondence on this matter will be entertained. 6. Female applicants who are pregnant are strongly advised not to sit for the practical examination [unless they have been certified fit to do so by their doctor]. 7. STB reserves the right to change the examination dates / itineraries at our discretion. STB reserves the right to disqualify dishonest candidates. 1301/2010 1

3 FORMAT OF THE STB S TOURIST GUIDE LICENSING EXAMINATION The STB s Tourist Guide Licensing Examination comprise of two examinations that candidates can attempt once they have obtained the 3 SOAs: 1. Theory Examination 2. Practical Examination Only candidates who have passed the theory examination may register for the practical examination. Should candidates fail the practical component, they have the option to retake the practical component within one calendar year. Fees for the re-examination shall apply accordingly. 1. THEORY EXAMINATION The examination is conducted in either English or Mandarin regardless of guiding language and is conducted via electronic testing. There will be 150 multiple-choice questions divided into 2 sections: Section A and B. Please note that to pass the theory examination, you are not allowed to make more than 45 mistakes out of the 150 Multiple Choice Questions. Each section has 75 questions and candidates will be given 1 ½ hours to complete each section. A 15 minutes break will be given after Section A is completed. Results for the theory examination will be generated on-the-spot once Section B is completed. Dictionaries (printed copies) are allowed (please note that electronic dictionaries are NOT permitted). Candidates must be present at the Test Centre at least 30 minutes before the start of the examination. Candidates who are late will not be permitted entry to the examination room. 2. PRACTICAL EXAMINATION Examination is divided into two components : Field and Coach in 2 sessions (AM: 8.30am to 12.30pm, PM: 2.00pm to 6.00pm) Duration of entire tour : 4 hours Duration of individual assessment : mins Assessment would be done in the requested guiding language The examination would be assessed by STB and its appointed professional assessors. The decision of the assessment panel is final. Each tour would be centred on a theme. Commentary on the coach and field should be tied to the theme assigned for the tour as much as possible. All the routes that may be tested are as listed in Annex A. No prompting is allowed during the practical tour. A videographer would follow the group to record the candidates performance. This is to facilitate ease of review of every candidate s performance and is strictly for internal reference only. The Board will not entertain individual s request to view the recordings. Results will be released immediately after each half day session. Every candidate will be advised on their areas of strengths and weaknesses by the assessors Assessment Procedures are as follows: 1. Assemble at pick-up point at least 30 minutes before the start of the examination 2. Test routes will be released 7 days prior to examination. 3. Candidates would be randomly selected to take turns to undertake their coach and field components. a) Coach Candidates are to provide 8-12 minutes of commentary each, on a moving coach about the surrounding area, destination and/or general information about Singapore. b) Field Candidates are to provide minutes of commentary each as they lead the tour group through the designated place of interest. 5.
