4 OPENING REMARKS the successful story continues Throughout my career, I have spent a lot of time in China on business. I am always amazed by the amount of growth and development taking place. That growth is translating to the fleet of Chinese airlines Since China s purchase of a fleet of Boeing 707s in 1972, Boeing has worked together successfully with modern China for 36 years. Boeing has delivered hundreds of commercial jets to China, including dozens of s. In fact, this year marks the 30th anniversary of China s first order of. Starting with a single jumbo jet received in 1980, China s globe-spanning fleet has grown to scores of s today and it is still playing an important role in this country s leading economic growth. Over the past six years, the Chinese airline fleet has doubled from 560 to 1,150 airplanes. The fleet is expected to add another 3,380 airplanes in the next 20 years. Of the 3,380 new airplanes, approximately 90 airplanes are expected to be Boeing or larger. The new Boeing -8 Intercontinental and Freighter will play key roles in filling this demand. The -8 offers airlines the lowest operating costs and best economics of any large passenger or freighter airplane, while providing improved environmental performance. ROSS R. State of the art performance, environmental and comfort technologies create a new airplane that combines the best features of the enormously successful with the latest advancements The -8 value proposition in both economic and environmental performance is validated by the interest it has received from the marketplace. Since the program s launch in Nov. 2005, Boeing has secured firm orders for airplanes. Nippon Cargo Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Korean Air are among some of the Asian carriers who have ordered the -8. Based on the growth projections in the Asia and China markets, the number of -8 orders is certain to grow. Production on the new -8 Freighter is set to begin in the third quarter of this year. The first -8 Freighter will be delivered in late 2009, with the -8 Intercontinental delivering in late Boeing China Newsletter The -8 presents Boeing with a rare opportunity and I am excited about the opportunity to bring this airplane to market.
