Paris air show 2015

Despite pre-show suggestions that there would be less business, order commitments and options again passed the 1,200 mark at this year s Paris air show. Indeed, the order and option commitments for 1,223 aircraft announced at this year s event covered 13 more aircraft than disclosed at the Farnborough air show last year. This includes 226 options during Paris, 22 more than at Farnborough. Of the 999 order commitments, 428 were firm orders and another 571 were tentative deals still to be firmed. REGIONAL 6% LCC 21% CARGO 2% BIZ/GOV 0.2% COMMITMENTS 999 MAINLINE 40% Aircraft lessors were again active players at the show, if at lower levels than at Farnborough when they signed for 576 aircraft. At Paris they committed to 369 aircraft, predominantly covering Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies. But this year network carriers were the busiest, placing orders and option commitments for 476 aircraft. Low-cost carriers accounted for a further 257 commitments. LESSOR 31% OPTIONS Flightglobal

TOP FIVE CUSTOMERS Airbus saved its biggest deal to the last day of the Paris air show after revealing that newly listed European budget carrier Wizz Air had tentatively agreed to take 110 Airbus A321neos in a high-density, 239-seat Cabin Flex configuration. Airbus says the aircraft, fitted with 18in seats, would be delivered between 2019 and The Wizz deal, which also covers 90 purchase rights, is the biggest single order for the variant, and the largest deal announced during the air show. Korean Air, which made commitments for new generation Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies, announced business covering over 100 aircraft. Forty of these cover options. Its SkyTeam partner Garuda Indonesia similarly made commitments for aircraft from both Seattle and Toulouse. It announced tentative deals for 30 Airbus A350s, 30 Boeing 787-9s and Max 8s. 4 commitments and options by market group There were over 800 order and option commitments for narrowbody aircraft unveiled during the show. The vast majority of these were for Airbus A320neos and Boeing 737 Max aircraft. The narrowbody commitments also included 64 for Comac s C919. Boeing s widebody business included Volga-Dnepr s tentative deal to acquire another freighters. The Russian cargo specialist is looking to expand a fleet operated by its AirBridge Cargo division. The US manufacturer also disclosed a follow-up order from Ethiopian Airlines for six 787s, previously attributed to an unidentified customer. Qatar Airways was active again, placing follow-on orders for Xs and four 777 Freighters. Korean Air also ordered a pair of ERs. Garuda Indonesia ordered 787s and A350s, while Taiwanese carrier Eva Air added long-haul aircraft from both airframers, with preliminary deals for five 777 Freighters and four additional A330s. On the Airbus side, it secured a commitment from Saudia for 20 of the regional version of the A under an agreement which will also include 30 A320ceos. It will take the A330s on lease from Middle East lessor IAFC. The carrier had already been revealed as an initial customer for the new lower-weight A330 variant, which is being aimed at high-density shorter routes. Airbus has confirmed that Saudia, which already has 12 A330s in its fleet, will be the first operator of the type. That was bolstered by the Wizz commitment for 200 aircraft, including 90 options. Synergy Group, which signed a tentative deal for 62 of the type for its Avianca Brazil unit, was the second largest commitment for the type. Aircraft lessor GECAS also signed for 60 A320neos. Boeing secured commitments for Max jets, including a firm order for 100 from lessor AerCap. Another lessor which had ordered heavily at Farnborough, SMBC Aviation Capital, came back for more, adding a further 10 Max 8s to the 80 it already had on order. Minsheng Financial Leasing signed an MoU for s - a mix of NGs and Max jets. Chinese carrier Ruili Airlines committed to 30 Max jets with financial support from AVIC International Leasing. 7 Flightglobal

orders by aircraft manufacturer The Wizz deal pushed Airbus ahead during the week for orders and options though Boeing always maintains it does not enter the air-show orders race having secured 421 order commitments and 110 options. Boeing disclosed 371 commitments during the air show, of which 40 were options. Airbus held sway with around two-thirds of the narrowbody deals, while Boeing secured 77 widebody commitments to 55 from Airbus over the week. ATR racked up 81 order and option commitments during the week that included Cebu Pacific as the launch customer for its high-density ATR The Philippine carrier ordered 16 of the type and took options on 10 more. The aircraft are equipped with 78 seats. ATR also secured its first Japanese customer, after Japan Air Commuter signed for eight ATR s. Chinese lessor Ping An Leasing inked a letter of intent for 50 C919s, becoming one of Comac s largest customers. Chinese investor Puren Group also signed for seven C919s and seven ARJ21s. The aircraft are for start-up Puren Airlines. Aircastle ordered 25 Embraer 190/195-E2s, while Embraer also secured orders from US carriers United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, as well as Chinese start-up Colorful Guizhou. Flightglobal s Ascend equates this to over $69 billion in business. The order values are in 2015 dollars, based on Ascend s 2015 Full-Life Base Values, as these are judged to more closely reflect the actual value of the orders, rather than the manufacturer list prices often quoted. 9 commitments and OPTIONS by engine oem Engine commitments were included with just over half the aircraft order commitments and options announced during Paris, with CFM International sole powerplant provider on Boeing 737s securing almost 30% of this business. 7% 3% 0.2% Several orders though were left open. No engine manufacturer was disclosed for the Avianca Synergy A320neo commitment, as neither has one been disclosed for Avianca s 100 neo order sealed in May. But the group s first batch of A320Neos are powered by CFM International s Leap-1A engines. 9% 9% ORDERS & OPTIONS 1,223 44% Unannounced Neither were there engines announced for Garuda Indonesia s 787s nor Saudia s new A330 regionals and additional A320s - though Saudia s current A330s are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700s while its A320-family fleet is fitted with CFM International CFM56s. Italian operator Neos was disclosed as a customer for three Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered Boeing 787-8s, while Ethiopian Airlines is taking the six remaining early-build 787-8s known as the terrible teens. 29% NOTE: based on all 1,202 aircraft ordered during the show Boeing had struggled to find buyers for s that rolled off the assembly line before a block-point design change dramatically reduced the aircraft s weight and improved its fuel efficiency. Ethiopian already operates s powered by General Electric GEnx-1B engines, but will now lease six Rolls-Royce powered aircraft. The carrier is to lease the jets from AerCap and Rolls-Royce states the powerplant agreement had already been recorded in its orderbook. Engine deals covering previously ordered aircraft announced during the show included repeat business from Central European carrier Wizz Air and aircraft lessor CIT for International Aero Engines V2500 engines to power A321s. Turkish Airlines meanwhile picked Pratt & Whitney s PW1100G engine for its onorder Airbus A321neos. 9 Flightglobal

order market share by operator region Asia was comfortably the most active region, accounting for half the airline commitments during the show. There were big commitments from Korean and Garuda for Airbus and Boeing aircraft, from Cebu Pacific and Japan Air Commuter for ATR turboprops and from Colorful Guizhou Airlines for Embraer aircraft. Indonesian carrier Sriwijaya Air emerged as the customer behind a two-unit unattributed ER order already on the airframer s books. VietJet Air took six more A321s, while Peach signed for three A320s the Japanese budget carrier s first directly purchased aircraft. Airbus also said an undisclosed Asian carrier has inked a memorandum of understanding for 60 A320neos.
