8 Thank you for attending ALPA s International Aviation Security Academy & Conference ALPA Pilots: Strong, Focused, Safe 75 Years of Airline Pilots in Command Strong, Focused, Seventy-five years ago, a small cadre of airline pilots gathered in secret to plan for their futures. Their concerns were basic, consisting primarily of their desire to fly airplanes for a living, earn a decent wage, and live to tell their grandchildren stories of what they hoped would be a vanished past. Those early leaders the key men of the Air Line Pilots Association, International knew that if airline piloting was to be a true profession, it was up to them to make it so. The current generation of airline pilots continues to fight for the profession. No economic analyst could have predicted the chain of events that has led to the long downturn the airline industry is taking. No one can say precisely how or when it will end. The marking of ALPA s 75th year of existence is a time to reflect on the past, but it is also an opportunity to honor the strength of the current generation of pilots in an effort to inspire them to invest in the future of the piloting profession.
