Despite the turbulent industry climate, AIA achieved a favourable traffic development and positive financial results. Athens Airport maintained its high worldwide profile and was honoured with important international distinctions, in recognition of the Company s high level of performance. The proficient and steady course of Athens International Airport reflects the efficient cooperation of the Airport community, as well as the fruition of AIA s Marketing Strategy. Towards this strategy, during 23 we further pursued our close partnership with Airlines, Passengers and other industry partners, and continued to invest highly in market intelligence. In this context, and consistent to our commitment to offer advanced information services, we prepared "Aerostat 23", the second issue of the annual traffic report for Athens International Airport. "Aerostat 23" illustrates the evolution of the Athens aviation market for 23, presenting key trends on the Airport s network, passenger traffic, aircraft movements and cargo uplift, as well as on punctuality, passenger profile and the performance of services offered to our passengers. The latest developments in the Greek, European and global aviation industry are also portrayed. The first half was marked by a series of unfavourable events the international recession, the war in Iraq and the unexpected SARS effects, while the last months were characterised by the industry s dynamic recovery. Despite this volatile climate, 23 was a successful year for Athens International Airport, with positive traffic development. The airport s overall passenger throughput reached million and surpassed the 22 levels by 3.6%, while the airport serviced 17, aircraft movements, representing a strong growth of 6.7%, and uplifted 11, tons of cargo (2.7%). In terms of passenger traffic, the observed annual growth was in accordance with the European average of 4.2%, reaffirming the Airport s successful performance in 23. The domestic market, with 4.4 million passengers, enjoyed a growth of 5.4% compared to 22, while the international market, with 7.9 million passengers, also experienced a rise of 2.6%. The negative effect of the industry s recession was short-lived for Athens Airport, since both domestic and international markets returned to growth starting June and showed an accelerated increase towards the end of the year. It is worth noting that during the 4th quarter of the year, international traffic scored the highest passenger volumes ever in Athens, signifying a steady and successful recovery. The overall positive international traffic development was mainly due to the increased traffic towards EU countries (5.4% compared to 22), boosted by the increased presence of low-cost carriers at the Airport. Traffic to non-eu European countries also showed a rapid recovery with high growth rates (2.5%). The American market, although being the region most severely affected by the war in Iraq, experienced an overall downturn of 9.7%. The Far East region suffered severe effects from multiple global crisis events (especially SARS) and presented an annual decline of 6.7%. For the Middle East yearly figures closed with a loss of 3.6%, signifying that the war in Iraq had an overall minor impact than initially expected, while Africa also showed a slim drop of 3.2%. The remarkable growth of 6.7% in the number of flights was well above the average European growth of 1.2%, and signifies the expansion of the Airport s route network, reflecting the fruition of AIA s strategy for attracting new airlines and introducing new destinations consistently followed since the Airport s opening. In 23, seven new airlines launched services out of Athens (three of which are low-cost carriers) while six new international destinations were added to AIA s network. Total cargo traffic had an overall increase of 2.7% when compared to the 22 uplift. The corresponding increases for freight and mail amounted to 2.3% and 8.9% respectively. Similarly, domestic and international traffic grew by 6.7% and 1.8% respectively. While the cargo figures did not present a substantial growth, a positive month-by-month trend was observed throughout 23. Especially in December 23 volumes demonstrated a remarkable recovery by reaching a 16% increase in comparison to December 22. Only three months, namely April, August and September 23, displayed negative figures compared to the corresponding 22 volumes, the decreases being attributed mainly to the earlier Easter period in 23, the SARS crisis and the Iraq war, as well as the general economic situation during summer 23. Following the favourable traffic development towards the end of 23, a total of 2.5 million passengers travelled through our airport in the period of January through March 24, achieving a remarkable increase of 12.5%. This positive trend, together with the Olympic Games impact, indicates that 24 will be a year of strong growth for Athens Airport. 3

5 P A S S E N G E R T R A F F I C Athens International Airport presented a robust passenger traffic development throughout 23. The domestic market, benefiting from the improved access to the Airport and the attractive airline offers, was less affected by the adverse events of the year, and recorded higher levels of growth compared to the international market. Focusing on the international market, scheduled traffic enjoyed a steady growth of 4.1%, while charter traffic registered a loss of 12.3%. The latter was mainly due to the declining trend in the package tours market, and the increased presence of low-cost carriers at Athens Airport. As a consequence, the market share of international charter traffic to the Airport s overall passenger traffic dropped from 5.6% in 22 to 4.7% in 23. Germany remains at the top of the international scheduled markets for passengers, with a growth of 9.3% over 22. UK, which exhibited a significant rise of 12.5% due to the increased capacity offer to London both by British Airways and the newcomer Hellas Jet, climbed to the second position. Italy remained stagnant in the course of 23 dropping to the third place. Belgium enjoyed a substantial increase of 46.5%, boosted by the rapid growth of Virgin Express and the entry of Hellas Jet in the particular market, reaching the eighth place and overtaking USA and Spain. France represents more than half of AIA s international charter traffic (55.8%), and was one of the few charter markets that did not suffer a decline during 23. Czech Republic and Austria, in contrast to the general negative development of charter traffic, exhibited significant increases of 14.6% and 186.9% respectively, indicating the emergence of new non-traditional markets for outgoing tourism. Within the European scheduled market, most of the top 1 destinations out of Athens enjoyed substantial growth, whereas Frankfurt, Milan and Amsterdam were the only major cities experiencing a decline in the course of 23. Overall, non-european scheduled passenger traffic in 23 was below the levels of the previous year by 8.1%. Amongst the top 1 non-european destinations, Dubai enjoyed the highest growth of 8.6%, followed by Tel Aviv and Johannesburg with an increase of 7.% and 2.% over 22 respectively. All the remaining top destinations suffered from marginal to substantial losses, with Bangkok, New York and Singapore being the destinations mostly affected by the 23 global crisis. The majority of the domestic destinations presented considerable growth levels in the course of 23. Heraklion and Corfu enjoyed the strongest growth. Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines continue to be our top 2 customers in terms of passenger traffic, with Olympic Airlines holding 4.6% (44.1% in 22) and Aegean Airlines 16.4% (13.8% in 22). Our new home carrier, Hellas Jet, entered the market in April 23 and in its first year of operation achieved the 12th position in the passenger traffic ranking. Amongst the major foreign carriers, easyjet has gained considerable ground, reaching the 8th place. Low-cost traffic presents a clear upsurge in the Athens air travel market. In 23, low-cost carriers (easyjet, Germania, German Wings, Snowflake and Virgin Express) represented 6.7% of AIA s international scheduled traffic, while the corresponding share in 22 (easyjet and Virgin Express) was at the level of 4.3%. Airline load factors for the year 23 were at the level of 64%, marking a decline of 2 points compared to 22. This was due to the fact that international passenger demand could not meet the considerable increase in capacity, resulting in a drop in international load factors from 68% to 64%. Domestic load factors, on the other hand, enjoyed an increase from 63% to 64%. Saturday, 9th August, was the Airport s peak day according to total passenger traffic, with 56,575 passengers, approximately 2,4 passengers more than the 22 peak. The same day the international traffic peak was also observed, with 39,641 passengers. 7

9 AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS The number of aircraft movements enjoyed a strong growth of 6.7% in the course of 23, with domestic and international flights presenting an increase of 4.7% and 8.7% respectively. This increase, especially for the international sector, reflects the new passenger air services introduced, which also resulted in the increased market share of international scheduled flights from 4.8% to 42.4%. The monthly development of aircraft movements was robust throughout the year, since all the months presented an increased number of flights over 22, even during the period from March to May, which was strongly affected by the global crisis events. Only charter flights decreased during 23, indicating the general negative trend of the specific segment. The majority of the main international scheduled markets out of Athens enjoyed double-digit growth, with Netherlands being the only country experiencing a decrease in the number of flights, due to the cease of the 4th KLM flight to Amsterdam. Overall, international scheduled traffic enjoyed an outstanding rise of 11%. On the contrary, the international charter sector declined by 11%. In the top 1 of international charter markets, Austria saw a remarkable growth, more than doubling its flights, while France achieved an increase of 1.6%. Regarding the airlines ranking in terms of aircraft movements, Olympic Airlines market share dropped from 49.4% in 23 to 46.3% in 23, while Hellas Jet, with less than one year of operation at AIA, managed to reach the 1th place, representing the 1.4% of the Airport s total passenger movements. Flights operated by low-cost carriers represented 5.7% of the international scheduled movements in 23, compared to 3.7% in 22, reflecting the increased presence of low-cost carriers at Athens International Airport. In terms of aircraft types used, a clear shift to aircraft with Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) between 55 and 12 tons is observed, with 47.7% of flights using such aircraft (43.8% in 22). The increased use of Airbus 32, as well as Boeing is the main contributing factor behind this development. The busiest day of 23 in terms of flights was Friday, 25th July, with 646 landings and takeoffs, surpassing the 22 peak levels by 35 movements. 15

14 Total cargo, i.e. inbound and outbound freight and mail handled through AIA, amounted to 19,741 tons in 23, with mail volume amounting to 7.8% of the grand total. In addition, the international express freight volumes reached almost 13.3% of the total market, reflecting a slight increase from their 22 market share (12.8%). C A R G O U P L I F T Inbound freight reached 55% of the total uplift in 23, with outbound freight (45%) demonstrating a slight decline compared to the 22 share (48%). Correspondingly, inbound freight volumes increased by 8.2% compared to a 4.2% decrease of the outbound freight tonnage. It is worth pointing out that the intra-eu outbound tonnage represents an 87% of the market. Out of the remaining 13% extra-eu outbound traffic, the major share (54.5%) pertains to transit traffic (TIR) from the Balkans and Turkey, which was transported by truck to Athens and then flown to the final destination. During 23, this type of traffic continued to shrink as shipments were shifted to other European airports (e.g. Vienna and Brussels). Furthermore, flown domestic cargo represented 21% of the total volume, increasing its 22 share (19%). The major development was observed in mail traffic, presenting an impressive 57.6% increase. Specifically, inbound and outbound mail volumes grew by 13.3% and 38.3% respectively. Moreover, international inbound cargo increased by 8.6% as opposed to the 8.9% decrease of international outbound cargo volumes. Freight and mail flown in and out of Athens was mostly carried onboard passenger aircraft, while freighter aircraft volumes averaged 26% of the total uplift. Cargo was flown almost entirely on scheduled services with charter traffic (freighters only) reaching only 2% of the total, consisting mainly of perishable imports from Africa. The main commodities in the international traffic segment included mainly perishable products, garments, pharmaceuticals, spare parts, as well as telecommunication and industrial products, whereas the domestic traffic comprised largely mail, press and courier material. Finally, the main cargo operators in 23 included three major integrators, namely EAT, UPS and TNT, connecting daily Athens to their European gateways, one Lufthansa weekly freighter and two Greek cargo carriers, Vernicos Aviation and the newly established Mediterranean Air Freight (MAF), both daily serving primarily the Greek islands. Inbound mail in 23 reached the 52% of the total uplift showing a 3% increase compared to 22. Inbound mail volumes increased by 16.2% compared to a 1.8% increase in outbound mail tonnage. 25

17 During 23, Athens was connected to 32 domestic and 77 international scheduled destinations through the operations of 6 scheduled airlines, while a total of 122 destinations were served by charter flights of 87 additional carriers. The Airport s network was considerably enhanced in 23 with seven new airlines and six new international destinations. Snowflake, a new low-cost airline owned by the SAS group, introduced three weekly frequencies to Copenhagen and two weekly frequencies to Stockholm in April, while during the same period Luxair launched daily flights to Luxembourg via Bergamo. In June, Hellas Jet, a newly established Greek-Cypriot carrier using AIA as its home base, commenced services out of Athens, offering two daily flights to Paris and Brussels and daily flights to London, while the fast-expanding low-cost German carrier Germanwings introduced four new weekly frequencies between Cologne and Athens. In July, AIA also welcomed Albanian Airlines, which launched scheduled services between Athens and Tirana with four weekly flights. In November, Germania Express, the third low-cost new entrant, started operating out of Athens, offering three weekly frequencies to Berlin and Hamburg, and four weekly flights to Dusseldorf, Munich and Zurich, while Gulf Air resumed services at AIA with daily flights to Bahrain with a connection to Sydney. In addition to the new destinations offered by the new entrants, AIA also added Constanta to its route network, introduced by Tarom, already flying to Bucharest. NETWORK 31

20 The performance of Athens International Airport in terms of flight punctuality has been improved in the course of 23, as a result of the efficient cooperation of all the involved parties (airport, airlines, handlers etc). More specifically, in % of departing flights were delayed for more than 15 minutes as compared to 34.% in 22. The average delay time was at the level of 39 minutes and remained at similar levels compared to 22 (4 minutes). Both scheduled and charter departing flights presented fewer delays in 23, while the average delay of charter flights was reduced by 5 minutes (from 62 to 57 minutes). Focusing on scheduled flights, international and especially intercontinental operations were considerably more punctual in 23, while the drop in the proportion of intercontinental delayed flights from 41% to 3% is noteworthy. August was the month with the largest proportion of delayed departures (36.5%), although greater delay times were observed in December, averaging 47 minutes. Focusing on delay reasons, the available results are based on the 55% of delayed departures for which the corresponding reasons have been dispatched to AIA (as compared to the 31% in 22). This improved representation partially explains the considerable differences observed in the distribution of delay reasons compared to the previous year. The most important reason for delayed departures is still the "Reactionary" factor, representing 38.1% of the delays. The late arrival of aircraft from another flight is one of the major drivers of "Reactionary" delays. "Aircraft & Ramp Handling" and "Flight Operations & Crewing" follow, representing 12.7% and 1.5% respectively of the late departures. Only.8% of the delayed departures is attributed to "Airport Facilities", signifying the high level of the facilities and services offered by AIA, as well as the efficient performance of AIA staff. 23 P A S S E N G E R P R O F I L E The demographic profile of passengers travelling from/to Athens remains stable throughout the last years. A typical Athens Airport passenger is male (63%), 39 years old, highly educated (university/college, 74%). More than half of the Airport s traffic comprises Greek nationals (55%) living in Greece (54%). Another significant part of the Airport s travellers are the European nationals (4%), exhibiting an increase in 23 (36% in 22). Inbound and outbound traffic is equally distributed amongst passengers (49% vs. 51% respectively). Regarding the travelling profile, Athens passengers are mainly medium travellers (59%) making 7 air trips per year on the average, while their plane journeys include at least 3 visits to Athens. They usually stay approximately 7-8 days on their trip destination, whereas the average duration of stay in Athens is 4-5 days. A highly growing category of Athens traffic comprises people travelling for business purposes. In 23 business travellers amounted to 35%, showing an important increase of 9% as compared to 22. The majority of business passengers are males (86%), above 4 years of age, highly educated (84%), who can be characterised as frequent flyers. Business people travel all over the year, with the exception of the summer months and especially during August, when a significant drop can be observed. The majority of them fly on behalf of their company (79%), mostly in order to attend a business meeting (89%). Leisure travellers are mainly holidaymakers (64%). The growing attractiveness of Athens as a tourist destination is evident in 23, since tourists presented a considerable growth of 18% as compared to the previous year. The majority of people visiting Athens for holidays travel independently (71%), while the remaining 29% of tourists travel with a group in order to better organise their holidays (29%). Passengers visiting friends and relatives account for the 38% of those travelling for personal reasons, representing also an important segment of the Airport s traffic. The increase of business passengers travelling on behalf of a company has also affected the ticket booking profile, since the Company s travelling department is developing as a means for booking air tickets. A slight increasing trend can also be observed amongst passengers that book their ticket directly by contacting an Airline. The reservation period and the period for picking up the ticket remain at 2 days and 15 days prior to departure respectively. Another promising group of passengers for Athens airport is people travelling to their final destination via Athens. In 23, the transfer product reached 27% of the Athens traffic, presenting a remarkable increase of 35% in comparison to 22. The increasing trend primarily reflects passengers flying to other domestic destinations via Athens, following the increasing trend of the Airport s domestic traffic in 23. The top Greek destinations of connecting traffic are Thessaloniki (19%), Heraklion (18%) and Rhodes (12%), while the most favourable international destinations for connecting passengers are Cyprus (19%), Germany (8%) and the United Kingdom (7%). Indirect traffic to international destinations accounts for 12% of total Athens traffic in 23. Chicago and New York are the main indirect destinations, indicating that there is a great potential for development in the North American region. 43

26 SERVICE PERFORMANCE In 23, the Airport s service performance, as reflected by the measurements of actual performance on critical areas, presented a significant improvement compared to the previous year. More specifically, Check-in queuing time declined to an average of 6.4 min (from 7.9 min in 22), while average Ticket Desk queuing time was 4.5 min (from 6.4 min in 22), and average Security Queuing time was 2.5 min (from 2.8 min in 22). Baggage Delivery time showed an improvement on performance over 22, with the average Baggage Delivery time in 23 for aircraft on block first bag ranging between minutes on average, whereas the baggage delivery time for First bag-last bag ranged between minutes. Indicatively, for August 23 the baggage-reclaim time for a/c on block to first bag dropped by 1 minute (from 19.1 in 22 to 18.1). Regarding the "info desk-loading" indicator, illustrating the impact of passenger traffic on information counters, it is worth noting that during summer 23 (1 June 31 Aug), more than 495, passengers were served by our Terminal Information Agents, who responded to more than 4 queries per hour (Arrivals and Departures levels). In regards to call centre performance, more than 9% of the calls were answered in less than 2 minutes, representing a similar level of service as in 22. In taxi queuing, more than 98% of measurements reflected waiting time of under 1 minutes, signifying a high level of performance even during times of disruption (strikes etc). The volume of passenger comments received during 23 was higher (+62.8%) compared to 22. Nevertheless, management performance was within target. More specifically, Response time was 23.3 days (target 28 days), Response rate was 1% (target 1%) and Customisation rate was 84.6% (target 8%). By the end of the year, 5,852 passengers provided their feedback in writing (9,72 comment items). Of these 7.6% were complaints, whereas the remaining were positive comments, suggestions etc. It is worth mentioning that this ratio (improved in relation to 22 where 8.2% were complaints) indicates the gradual enhancement of the level of communication between the Airport and the travelling public. The distribution of complaints per area is as follows: Complaints related to passenger services correspond to 33.6% (of these 14.5% of the total are attributed to Airlines); Facility-related complaints correspond to 33.3%, and Commercial-related complaints correspond to 14.7%. A monthly report, communicated regularly to AIA management, contains the detailed qualitative analysis of comments received, in relation to actual measured performance. This task contributes to the identification of possible areas for improvement, aiming at the enhancement of the services offered. In addition to the quantifiable Service Performance indicators, the perception of passengers/visitors for the level of services offered is captured through the passenger comment management process. 49

28 During 23, the Greek aviation industry saw a robust traffic development, with the 38 commercial airports welcoming a total of 33.9 million passengers (+1.3%) and 38 thousand aircraft movements (+3.7%), while handling 127,9 tons of cargo (+.6%). This positive development is mainly attributed to the growth of the domestic market, which showed a 6.7% increase in terms of passengers, boosted by the competitive airline offers, as well as by the increase of travelling between peripheral airports. Conversely, international passenger traffic to/from the Greek airports was below the corresponding levels of 22 by.8%. Despite this overall negative trend, Athens enjoyed growth at the level of 3% in its international passengers, outperforming all the other major Greek airports. This development reflects the negligible dependence of Athens international traffic from the charter market s downturn, which results from AIA s strategy focusing on year-round operations. The decline in international passengers for the main Greek peripheral airports is indicative of a drop in the incoming foreign traffic to the traditional holiday destinations, while smaller airports like Kefallonia and Kalamata, representing new attractive destinations, witnessed increased international passenger traffic. Athens Airport represents 36.1% of Greece s total passenger traffic, followed by Heraklion and Thessaloniki, representing 14.1% and 9.9% respectively. Focusing on the international charter market, Heraklion holds the first place, accounting for 24.8%, while Rhodes and Corfu follow suit with 16.% and 12.3% respectively. 30 Airport traffic worldwide presented an increase in the course of 23, despite the difficult market conditions. More specifically, 821 airports around the globe welcomed 3.4 billion passengers, representing a growth of 1.6% over 22, and uplifted 68.8 million tons of cargo, 2.8% more than the previous year. The number of flights amounted to 62.9 million and posted a marginal decline of.8%. Passenger traffic increased for all regions, with the exception of the Asia/Pacific rim, which declined by 1%. The Middle East showed the most favourable development, with an upturn of 5.5%, followed by Europe with a growth of 4.2%. In terms of aircraft movements, North and Latin America experienced a shortfall of 2.4% and 4.5% respectively, while all other regions presented an increase ranging from.7% for Africa to 9.8% for the Middle East. Cargo volumes declined only in the Latin America region, whereas the Middle East and Asia/Pacific achieved the highest cargo traffic growth levels with an increase of 9.8% and 5.6% respectively. with 22, both for passengers and flights, while airports in the Southern Europe Madrid, Rome, Barcelona enjoyed strong growth. For European cargo traffic, it is worth noting that Brussels, Luxembourg and Liege achieved double-digit growth, the last two climbing up in the top 1 European airports regarding cargo uplift. Athens Airport s traffic development compared to that of major European airports clearly indicates AIA s successful performance during 23. The growth of 6.7% in aircraft movements is much higher than the European average of 1.2%, while the passenger traffic increase of 3.6% does not deviate from the average European growth of 4.2%. Amongst 288 European airports, Athens holds the 23rd position in terms of aircraft movements, the 24th for passengers, and the 26th in terms of cargo.
