1 / May 2015 March 2015 compared with February 2015 Volume of retail trade down by 0.8% in euro area Down by 0.6% in EU28 In March 2015 compared with February 2015, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade 1 fell by 0.8% in the euro area 2 (EA19) and by 0.6% in the EU28 2, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In February 3 retail trade rose by 0.1% in both zones. In March 2015 compared with March the retail sales index increased by 1.6% in the euro area and by 2.5% in the EU28. 2 Monthly comparison by retail sector and by Member State The 0.8% decrease in the volume of retail trade in the euro area in March 2015, compared with February 2015, is due to falls of 2.7% for automotive fuel, of 0.8% for the non-food sector and of 0.6% for Food, drinks and tobacco. In the EU28, the 0.6% decrease in retail trade is due to falls of 2.9% for automotive fuel, of 0.5% for the non-food sector and of 0.3% for Food, drinks and tobacco. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in total retail trade were registered in Poland (+1.5%), Slovakia (+1.1%) and Denmark (+0.9%), while the largest decreases were observed in Portugal (-3.5%), Slovenia (-2.8%) and Germany (-2.3%). Annual comparison by retail sector and by Member State The 1.6% increase in the volume of retail trade in the euro area in March 2015, compared with March 2014, is due to rises of 3.0% for the non-food sector and of 0.1% for Food, drinks and tobacco, while automotive fuel fell by 0.7%. In the EU28, the 2.5% increase in retail trade is due to rises of 3.8% for the non-food sector and of 1.7% for Food, drinks and tobacco, while automotive fuel fell by 1.0%. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in total retail trade were observed in Malta (+8.9%), Poland (+8.7%), Latvia (+6.5%) and Ireland (+6.4%), while decreases were observed in Slovenia (-1.8%), Romania (-1.3%), Belgium (-0.9%) and Finland (-0.3%). 1. The index of the volume of retail trade measures the evolution of the turnover in retail trade, adjusted for price changes (deflated), i.e. the evolution of the total amount of goods sold, based on data adjusted for working day and seasonal effects. Seasonally adjusted euro area and EU series are calculated by aggregating the seasonally adjusted national data. Eurostat carries out the seasonal adjustment of the data for those countries that do not adjust their data for seasonal effects. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU aggregates.
