2 Use Your Paths Challenge - Another Final Update! I know I said that the article in the last Area News was the final update on the Use Your Paths Challenge as the closing date should have passed by now, but I now notice on the event website ( that the closing date is now 31st December I am not printing the usual Norfolk map in this edition, as this is now fairly meaningless at the usual scale. All of Norfolk has a pretty good covering of marked squares, so the entire map appears white. However if you zoom into the map, there are still a smattering of squares that still need to be checked, so the job isn t quite done yet. Please log onto the website, and zoom into your local area, and then spot the remaining un-shaded squares, and get your results in before the end of the year. Richard May Norfolk Young Walkers Group Update I am happy to note that many people have asked me how our new Young Walker s Group is getting going, and I am equally pleased to report that it is going very well. We have nearly 50 members of our website forum, although it is taking a lot longer to convert these into Ramblers members, as many people are still enjoying their two or three trial walks. The group is now doing 2 walks most months and we aim to walk on the first and third weekends with a mixture of Saturday and walks. The 6-8 mile walks are currently most popular and a pub at the end is almost mandatory! Recently we have achieved two significant highlights with our first published programme (of sorts) which appears in this newsletter, and our first weekend away. The latter took place in Wales in October when we joined in with the Talybont Trail organised walk, in the Brecon Beacons national park. Seven group members spent a most enjoyable weekend in Wales, and are now keen to arrange our next weekend away! Richard May 2 31

3 30 The Ramblers Association Norfolk Area December 2007 March 2008 Ian Mitchell 3 Reedham FPs 5, 6, 8, 9 on the north bank of the Yare from grid ref TG northeast to TG Haddiscoe FP 1 on the south bank of the Yare from grid ref TG northeast to TG Ludham FP 11 from Ludham Bridge beside the River Ant nearly to How Hill The following riverside paths have been set back on top of the re-engineered river banks: Carleton Rode FP 1 from 1st August this starts from 140 metres further west along Bunwell Street at grid ref TM and runs south following the field boundary to reach the original end point on Hunts Green. Path Changes Ian Mitchell If a development seems likely to affect a right of way, the volunteers can send me brief details and I will take it from there; unless one of the volunteers wishes to deal with it. Most applications can be ignored after inspecting a list of brief descriptions. This will leave a few applications to inspect in detail, checking their position relative to rights of way on Explorer maps. It would help the situation if two or three members living near Cromer could arrange between themselves to go into the District Council offices each week to check through the planning applications made in the previous week. Recently it came to light that North Norfolk DC had granted a planning application to build a house across the line of a public footpath. Currently we have no organisation for monitoring North Norfolk s planning applications. North Norfolk Planning Applications Newsletter & Walks Programme
