2 Can you help with our communications with fellow members? At our AGM last year Des Garrahan, the Ramblers Chair, complimented Norfolk Area on our two refocused roles of External Communications Officer and Internal Communications Officer. Sadly since then, Scott, our Internal Communications Officer has stood down from the role due to work commitments. This means we are short of a key member of our area team, and also means that I am currently editing this Area News again. Would you consider giving some time to to do this vital role? The principal responsibility is editing of Area News. The rest of the role is about developing new communications channels such as direct s to our members, and possibly other ideas that the role holder has. Technical assistance will be provided by myself and Julian, as well as the rest of the Area Team. The candidate for this job would need access to a computer and the Internet and some computer literacy. This will be an interesting and evolving role, that will help to grow both in numbers and in member participation. If you would like to discuss the role, please call me on , or me at richard@interlogic.co.uk I very much hope we will be electing a new Internal Communications Officer at the coming AGM in February, but if you are keen you can start as soon as you are ready. We believe that, by making quite small reasonable adjustments, our walks could be open to many people who might currently feel excluded from them. The policy is set out below. of The Ramblers wishes to make all of its activities, especially its walks, available to as many people as possible who wish to participate. In regard to people who have any sensory loss or disability but who wish to join any of our walks, we will on request make every effort to provide enough information about the nature of the walk to enable the person enquiring to decide whether or not they wish to join it. We will wherever possible make arrangements designed to make the walk as widely available as possible, subject to our walk leaders retaining ultimate responsibility for the safety and well being of all walkers: where we can make reasonable adjustments, we will always do so. Our members will seek to welcome and support all who join our walks, but where specific additional assistance is needed, we would expect the person concerned to arrange that assistance. Walking along some of our paths presents obvious challenges to people who have mobility or sight issues, but many of those challenges can be resolved with a bit of effort and willingness to find solutions. The onus is on us to show that we will try our hardest to enable a willing walker to join us. At the heart of the policy is the need for dialogue - a prospective walker must feel able to be realistic about what is reasonably possible for them, and we need to provide full and clear information about what might cause difficulties; we then also need to be ready to change our arrangements where we can to meet that person s needs if at all possible. We would expect that anyone who anticipates potential difficulties in joining a walk would make early contact with the walk leader, so that those difficulties can be understood, and measures considered which could resolve them. Where someone needs quite specific support (eg someone to accompany them throughout), we would expect that they would provide that support themselves. If support was needed only for specific issues (eg crossing a stile), we would hope that the walk leader would be able to arrange that from amongst the other walkers. We are aware that dogs - and hence the use of guide dogs - can present particular problems, but would not expect a blanket refusal to allow dogs on walks. Some routes may exclude dogs (eg if that is a condition of accessing land crossed by the route) but we would suggest other options are then explored: is there another way round that the guide dog user could follow? can they join this walk with a sighted supporter rather than using the dog (perhaps just for the section where dogs are not permitted, with a bit of logistical management)? would the land manager exceptionally agree to a guide dog? In summary: 1 Prospective walker makes contact with the walk leader 2 Walk leader provides information to enable the walker to decide if this is for them 3 If substantial support is needed, the walker should arrange this 4 Less intensive support can be provided by the other walkers 5 Walker enjoys the walk, Group has another happy customer We would hope that this process of looking at every option will always be followed, but there will inevitably be some occasions when, even with the application of thoughtful imagination, and with the best will in the world, it will be concluded that a particular walk just won t be possible for a particular person. If the reasons for this are clear, most of those situations will be accepted - after all, there are plenty of other walks that may well be possible. We would hope that disputes will be very rare, as they are now when walk leaders have to refuse participation from someone whom they feel cannot safely be allowed to join a walk. Any problems of this sort that do arise should be referred to Richard May. 3

RECKLAND SHORT RISK WALKS Our walks in reckland are short but brisk. We encourage walkers to walk at their own pace with a front and back marker. We do not stop during the walk, but there is usually a welcome stop for coffee or tea at the end of the walk. There is no need to book just ensure you have your membership card with you and arrive in good time to hear the pre-walk introduction. You are welcome to come for a taster walk first to see you like it! A good pair of walking shoes and adequate outdoor clothing is all that is needed as on occasions it can be wet and muddy. Postcodes shown on the schedule are as near as we can get them. Grid references have been provided in some cases. In very wet weather we might have to change the normal routes for safety reasons. However, the meeting places will be the same. Walks may have to be cancelled in very bad weather please phone or on the morning if in doubt. Date & Time December Saturday 2nd 9.30 am Venue Grid Ref & Miles Leader(s) Hike Norfolk Our walks are at the above URL. So this gives us some space to let everyone know about Hike Norfolk. We ve grown substantially over the last year in terms of the number of events and we ve had trips to walk the length of Hadrian s Wall, to udapest and Visegrad and we entered a team for the mud run in Woodbridge. Our 2018 trips to walk 100 miles of the Cornish coast path, to walk the entire length of the Ridgeway and to visit Lublin in Poland were all booked up in just a few hours. We will put on even more trips and we have around two to three social events every month. We will also be taking part in two mud runs, having another go at tubing on the dry ski slope and will be hiring another boat to explore the Norfolk roads. We will also go canoeing and hold lots of other social events to complement our walks. It s been great to see nearly 30 people on our busiest walks, the highest in our ten year history. And in 2018 we d like to do even more, by reaching out to those who want to meet new people and experience new challenges and adventures. Walkers can also bring dogs, cats, goldfish and anything else they want (other than snakes). We also ensure that we re seen as a professional and mature group, so our Christmas party won t be hampered (excuse the pun) by Christmas crackers or party hats, just gossip and then lots of real ale at a proper pub. rancaster Meet/park near Church, London Road at 9.30am for 9.36 am bus to Hunstanton.
