More information on long distance paths Kett s Country Walk (17 miles Cringleford to Wymondham) and the Tas Valley Way (25 miles) can be obtained from the Long Distance Walkers Association or Cross Norfolk Trail: With the opening of the 12 mile Wensum Way between Gressenhall and Lenwade in Mid Norfolk, a brand new long distance walking opportunity has been created that provides a continuous east/west path across the country between King s Lynn and Great Yarmouth. The new route provides the central portion of a cross-country route that begins with the Nar Valley Way and King s Lynn on the Wash, continues with the Wensum Way and Marriott s Way to Norwich where it picks up the Wensum River Parkway through the city and from here follows the Wherryman s Way to Great Yarmouth on the North Sea coast. The entire route is 96 miles in length and follows some of Norfolk s principal rivers the Nar, Wensum and Yare, for much of the way. Page 3
4 More information on long distance paths The first Norfolk stretch of the England Coast Path opens with 41 kilometres of coastline between Sea Palling and Weybourne. When complete, the England Coast Path will be a well way-marked National Trail around the whole English coast. The entire path is due to be completed by Further sections will be opened up along Norfolk s coast over the next couple of years. More information on Norwich s river walks Norwich lays at the head of the navigable waters of the River Yare, where it is joined by its major tributary, the Wensum. The two main river valleys, along with the smaller river valleys of the Tud and Tas, have had a significant influence on the development of Norwich. The steep wooded ridges in Norwich are part of the natural river valley landscape and the narrow valley floors are characterised by grazing marshes. There are typical of the lower river valleys of the Norfolk Broads. The Yare Valley Walk follows the River Yare from Bowthorpe Southern Park all the way to Marston Marsh, which is close to the Ipswich Road, through a range of different habitats. It features four local nature reserves Danby Wood, Marston Marsh, Earlham Park Woods and Bowthorpe Marsh. The walk also goes by the man-made broad at the University of East Anglia, created in the 1970s. The Norwich Fringe Project has built a boardwalk that makes this part of the walk accessible, even in wet conditions. The Wensum Riverside Walk follows the River Wensum from the city centre to Hellesdon. It can be continued by joining the Marriott s Way, which is also a Sustrans cycle route. In spring, the city centre portion of the walk is a blaze of colour. A spot well worth looking out for is the Cow Tower, part of Norwich s medieval defences. Near to Cow Tower is a place called the beach by locals, which is a favourite spot for children wanting to feed ducks and swans. Page 4
