2 Norfolk Area Ian Mitchell It would help me if someone perhaps living in Breckland took on this little job. From the plans many can be seen not to adversely affect the path concerned. Some warrant a visit to check on the situation and maybe write a letter asking that the developer be careful of the path or modify the plans. At the moment Breckland Council send me planning applications that might affect a public right of way: about 50 per year. Monitoring Breckland planning applications Ian Mitchell At present all claims for a public right of way based on historical sources will have to be made by This is only 18 years away. A number of "missing" paths have been identified and some 45 files opened for them. What it needs to progress these claims is some people willing to do research either in the record office or possibly in the parishes concerned. If you would like to help with this and need to know how, please contact me: Ian Mitchell Project: Lost Ways. People needed to find them. Ian Mitchell Wood Norton: Lyng Road and Lyng Hall Lane have been confirmed as byways in January. Roydon (and Diss) a 110 metre footpath from between 66 and 68 Louie`s Lane to Stores Street between 18 and 25, has been confirmed in December. Cley FP 26 from the entrance to the allotments next to the village hall through to Old Woman`s Lane and Cley FP 25 from further south on Church Lane to Old Woman`s Lane have been recognised as rights of way in December 2007 after an inquiry. 3 Norfolk Young Walkers Group Important Note: The walks listed in this programme for the Young Walkers Group are not the final arrangements, but the dates that members are proposing to run walks. Before coming on any walk listed below members must check our online forum for the latest plans on that event. The forum can be found at: The walks run by this group are aimed at walkers in their 20 s and 30 s, but along with any other Norfolk group, anyone is welcome to join us for any of our walks. It divides conveniently into eight sections, each between nine and eleven miles for the second s of each month starting in April and running through to November. Some of Suffolk Area Groups will be participating and providing some of the leaders. Although we have done the Angles Way before, in 2000 and again in 2004 many of our current members may not have had the opportunity to join in then. In addition Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils have recently been improving and upgrading the general condition of the route they wish to promote its attractions to more ramblers, it really is one of the best of East Anglia s long distance paths. Our linear walk will make a contribution to bringing the Way to the attention of a wider public at the same time as providing an enjoyable series of walks. The programme provides an opportunity to try all or parts of the route which are not already known to you, or a chance to return to the parts you regard as rather special. As usual, members of the public are very welcome to join us, in fact NCC are making special efforts to encourage this and are hoping to entice people who are not accustomed to walking in the countryside to give it a try. If they succeed many of these extra people will probably choose the shorter walks which NCC personnel lead. Because NCC wish to make our programme as accessible possible they are removing the requirement to book in advance and the transport will be completely free of charge. They assure me that they have arranged sufficient transport and return coaches will run from Yarmouth, Norwich and Thetford. And, of course, walkers who choose to go direct to the meeting places will be returned to the start after the walk. There should be a leaflet with full information about the event included with this Newsletter, but if yours is missing please phone me or visit our website Please note that two versions of the leaflet have been produced, only the earlier one includes my name as a contact for information, but if you receive the other version please be assured that that you can still phone me on may be especially important as I am available out of office hours. If you would like a guide book for the Angles Way please see page 5 of this Newsletter for details. Sheila Smith 3

In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore, that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimise the potential for an accident to arise. 11
