2 Norfolk County Council Interactive map of footpaths, bridleways etc. This map is available via the NCC website and I want to recommend it to all Ramblers members especially walks leaders. I have found it a wonderful resource and easy way to report footpath problems without looking up map refs. etc. This is how it works: Go to You get a small map of Norfolk with all the Footpaths etc. marked in different colours. Footpaths are blue for example. Use the + and signs to increase/decrease the size of the map and the directional arrows to navigate round the map to your required place and click on the footpath where you found a problem. You can also find a parish by typing the name in on the searching facility. Then, and this is where the good bit comes, a window appears telling you details of the path including parish and footpath number and the option to report the problem directly : To submit a comment<click here) You are then directed to your service (in my case Outlook Express) with the subject line filled in with the parish and path number, and the To line already filled in with environment@norfolk.gov.uk. You then describe the problem, send the and that s it! You can also attach photos if you have them. You need to get used to the site by using it but it gets easier the more you use it. If you don t use Outlook then I don t know if you get directed to your particular service. However you do get all the information from the map that you need to them as a separate process, except for the NCC address environment@norfolk.gov.uk. And now I ve given it to you twice. Ian Mitchell has been told by NCC that despite cutbacks they are keeping this map for the time being, so please give it a go. Prior to the NCC cutbacks problems were sorted quite quickly after reporting them this way let s see how they do now. Janet Stevens. SN Group. 3 Do you want to walk the more hilly regions of England? If so, phone Patrick or Diane on The Norfolk Hillwalking Club runs a minibus day trip to Derbyshire, almost every month for a day s walking away from flat old Norfolk. Appeal for Help Most planning applications do not affect our footpaths; but some can affect them badly either visually or by intentionally or unintentionally blocking the path. Where the latter is recognised by authority, the path may be diverted, although not necessarily on the most agreeable route. These diversions are notified to us after the planning applications have been approved, which usually is too late to say anything meaningful. The time for doing anything is when the planning application is made to the local authority. Several of our planning authorities have provision for notifying the public when an application may affect a right of way. Breckland and South Norfolk are very good at doing this and it is with these that I need help as they are quite frequent. You pay only for the accommodation - we guide you on the Lake District fells Couples and small / medium sized groups are our speciality Alternatively, relax and unwind, book on an accommodation only basis we can advise on sightseeing, restaurants, walking etc. 4 & 5 star High quality Self-catering Apartments in the heart of the National Park Private apartments in converted 17 th century Manor House & Coach House within own gardens. Tranquil, secluded location. Only three minutes walk from all village amenities. Private parking. Dogs welcome in some apartments. * * * 3 Night Weekend & 4 Night mid-week breaks available all year 2 night breaks available over the winter period Start a Mid-week break on a Monday Stay Thursday free of charge Free services of Qualified Mountain Leader for Guided Walking Details & Brochure Allison & Roger Peak coachouse@supaworld.com Breckland notifies me in the form of an , which I can open and find most of the detail and plans to help me judge if the development may affect a path. Much proposed work can be judged from the plans but sometimes a visit to the path can help to form a view. Then usually a brief comment on the proposal can be made. Something more lengthy and emphatic is only occasionally required. South Norfolk planning applications are advertised in the Eastern Daily Press on Thursdays with various reasons for the advert. Then they have to be looked up on South Norfolk s planning website, if one is to avoid going into their Long Stratton office. As in Breckland most information that one needs to know is shown. Again a visit to the path can help to form a view as well as checking on the state of the path. Any comments can again be made on-line. Because of potentially visiting the paths, the help that I am looking for is probably for people in two parts of the county: one near the centre and one in the south. It would obviously be an advantage if they were happy working on line with websites. For Breckland, either their address would be given to Breckland Planners, or I would have to forward the s if I continued to receive them. For South Norfolk, either they could look in the EDP themselves, or I could forward a scanned copy of the advert if they do not regularly take the paper. If someone feels that they could take one of these interesting jobs off my hands, please contact me on or ianmitchell5@virginmedia.com - Ian Mitchell, Area Footpath Co-ordinator 30 3
