2 Guided walks in NW Sutherland All walks 4.50 adults, 3.50 concessions. Children FREE! [for trial period] Tuesday 4th Guided walk [3hrs approx.]to the Wheelhouse at Laid by Durness; a 2,000yr old drystone dwelling on the hills high above Loch Eriboll an amazing site, great views and a fine moorland hill walk [290m], rough walking, no paths. Meet at 10:30am at the roadside lay by on the A838 about 7miles east of Durness. Map Ref NC Wednesday 5th Guided walk around the site of a 1780s clearance township near Durness; local history, interpretative panels, fine views, followed by a short walk across a beautiful secret beach. Meet at 10:30am at the roadside a layby about 3mls east of Durness on the A838. Map Ref NC Wednesday 12th Oct Archaeological tour of the Kyle of Tongue by car and on foot, looking at ancient sites, including cup and ring stones and an Iron age Broch, with tales of highland Jacobites and gold. Meet at Tongue village car park at 10:30am. Map Ref NC [Lasts about 3hrs]. [We may car share if convenient], includes some walking over rough and boggy ground. Thursday 20th Oct An autumnal guided walk through Scotland s most northerly oak woodland near Scourie. Good views; with lochs, burns, moorland, trees, the sea, ferns and lichens. Meet at the reserve car park [across the cattle grid] at 10:30am, 4 mls. south of Scourie just off the A894Map. We have been very busy this year with the improvements to the toilets, however there is still a lot of work to do, fundraising for rewiring, decorating and the usual ongoing maintenance. The committee is very small at the moment and we could really do with some help to keep the impetus up. Can you spare a few hours a month to help us keep this valuable community resource going? The more people there are the less of a burden it is on any one individual, and mostly it is good fun. Please come and help us keep going. A COLLECTION WILL BE HELD FOR THE 2017 DISPLAY ALL DONATIONS GRATEFULLY RECEIVED YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT IS MUCH

3 Christmas Fayre Scourie Primary School will be holding its annual fundraising Christmas Fayre on Sat 26 th Nov in Scourie Village Hall There will be a variety of craft stalls & school stalls. NB: There will be NO bric-a-brac stall this year. If you would like to book a stall for 10 please contact the school on Kinlochbervie High School It was announced last week that Mrs Susan Robertson has retired from her post as head teacher at Kinlochbervie High School and Kinlochbervie & Durness Primaries. Mr Graeme Smart will continue in his role of acting head teacher for the three schools. September s Weather Kayla-Jaid s fundraising dance, auction & raffle items Following a very successful fundraising evening, Kayla s family are delighted to announce that the current total, raised for the charities Kayla benefited from whilst in Glasgow, stands at Kayla s family could never have imagined it would be anywhere near that amount and are overwhelmed by the support they have had. They would most sincerely like to thank everyone who donated in any way. The Charities are: Schiehallion, Ward 2a, Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow Clic Sargent; Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation & The John O'Byrne Foundation. Gina & Lynn would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported them with their recent coffee morning in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. The fabulous total currently stands at Thanks go to all who attended, supplied baking and gave donations, and especially Valerie & Mhairi for the use of The Anchorage. Sunday 25 th was a significant day in the annual cycle. The day length (hours between sunrise and sunset) fell below 12 hours for the first time since 17 th March, and the night length increased above 12 hours. The sun rose at 7:12 am and set at 19:10 on that day making the day length 11 hours and 58 minutes, and day length is currently shortening by 5-6 minutes a day. Day length will continue to fall to a minimum of 6 hours and 21 minutes around mid-winter on 21 st December. Rainfall for September was 22 mm above the 20 year average with mm. More than half of that fell in the last week. The wettest day was 29 th with 20.5 mm, and there were 8 days when no rain was recorded. Temperatures have been above the two year averages, with an average maximum of 15.3 deg C (14.4 deg C av), and with a high of 19 deg C on 13 th. Average minimum temperature was 10.6 deg C (av 10.2 deg C). Lows of 8 deg C were recorded on 22 nd, 23 rd, 29 th and 30 th. Sunshine has been below average with 208 kw produced by the solar panels, an average of 7.21 kw (av 7.7 kw). The sunniest day was 5 th with kw. Bus Shelter The observant people amongst you will have noticed the arrival of a bus shelter outside the primary school, This is primarily for use by the high school pupils whilst they wait for their bus in the mornings. Contrary to popular opinion, the colour choice had nothing to do with the primary school s acting head teacher! It is standard Highland Council purple! Village Hall Donation Following the Ullapool Sportive cycle challenge, Hands On Events once again donated 200 to the Scourie community for the provision of a food station at the Drumbeg road-end for weary cyclists. This year the money has been put to the village hall.
