Eight of the sites were Scheduled Ancient Monuments, thirteen were Listed Buildings and there were three Conservation Areas. [Au(adp)] Archaeological periods represented: RO (B ) TA {55E4B C-4779-A880-5B3C2C8E36FE} Parish: Burton Agnes, Carnaby Postal Code: YO16 4UR BRIDLINGTON TO BURTON AGNES WATER IMPROVEMENT SCHEME Bridlington to Burton Agnes Water Improvement Scheme, Archaeological Assessment Cooper, O Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2005, 15pp, figs, tabs, refs There were a number of recorded sites of either prehistoric or Romano-British date within the study area. The villages along the route were probably Anglian or Scandinavian in origin, continuing through the medieval period. The surrounding open fields were gradually enclosed during the 16th-18th centuries and while some settlements reduced in size, Bridlington expanded into a small town. On the basis of the results of the assessment, a walkover inspection for the entire route and a programme of archaeological monitoring and geophysical survey was recommended. 2 Three cultural heritage sites were recorded within the study area, including extensive crop mark remains of two linear settlements of probable Iron Age or Romano-British date interspersed with Iron Age funerary features and crossed by palaeochannel of the Gypsey Race, and also of the shrunken medieval village of Burton Fleming. The proposed development was predicted to have a moderate impact upon part of one of the Iron Age or Romano-British crop mark complexes. Early and middle Saxon features had also been identified in and around the northern part of the area. In addition, the presence of 12th to 14th century earthworks, structural features and other remains to the east and north of the proposal area. Ridge and furrow was also present in several locations within the study area. On this basis, it was recommended that the proposals for new water mains avoided this part of the study area, if technically feasible. Based on the results of map regression, the site of the former paper mill buildings was overlain by a modern factory building. This dated from the post-medieval period and was fairly well documented. The other sites identified in the catalogue of archaeological sites all dated from the post-medieval period and the majority of evidence concerning Penistone came from this era. Archaeological Assessment Dawson, J Lancaster : Oxford Archaeology North, 2005, 58pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology North The desk-based assessment in advance of a wind farm revealed that Mesolithic and Neolithic lithic scatters had been found in the area, and there was evidence of Roman activity comprising a road to the east, several enclosures and coins. The land had been in agricultural use since at least the 16th century, and as late as 1720 was part of an open field. Honeysyke Farm was recorded as a post-medieval farm that dated back to 1775, while the adjacent Loscar Farm was built in the early 20th century. A predominantly artefact-based resource was identified during a walkover survey, with finds dating from the Mesolithic to the post-medieval periods. Any archaeological deposits were severely affected by
7 deep ploughing, and as a result there was not thought to be any significant impact by development. Possible Bronze Age barrows were located within 1km of the site, and a Mesolithic flint scraper was found within the 100m of the north-west corner indicating that there was some prehistoric activity taking place in the area. It was likely that the ground within the footprint of the main buildings had been significantly disturbed. There was thought to be archaeological deposits related to the springs within the proposed development area. These were, with the exception of one medieval cruck-framed building, post-medieval in date and associated with the industrial history of the area. There was one Scheduled Monument within 500m, the early 18th century Mousehole Forge (SM 1284), although this lay on the southern edge of the area. [Au(abr)]

The Mosborough Brick and Tile Works was constructed adjacent to the application area. A 1950s-60s barn was still standing, although the southern barn was in poor condition and were not considered to be archaeologically significant. No structures associated with the brickworks were recorded within the application area. The surrounding area was obscured by dense vegetation. The remains of kiln structures and a ruined 19th century works building survived to the east of the application area. The Sunday school was demolished and rebuilt in the 1870s as a parochial school on a much larger scale. The former school had been converted into a works, but retained much of its historic external features and was a building of significant historic character. The rest of the application area was not developed
9 until the 1830s-40s. The majority of the housing was cleared between 1935 and 1952 with the remaining work buildings demolished by the mid 1960s. There was a moderate potential for the survival of subsurface archaeological features within the proposal area, although the areas surrounding the flats were likely to have been extensively disturbed. During the latter half of the 20th century the site went through a series of extensive changes. The brewery was demolished in the 1960s to make way for a car park and in the early 1970s a new road called Arundel Gate was constructed to the south-east of the site. There were three Scheduled Monuments within the vicinity of the proposed works, although none were directly on the proposed route. Two conservation areas were located within 250m. There were 23 Listed Buildings within the study area, mostly within the Conservation Areas. A number of the recorded archaeological sites would be affected by the proposed development, principally the earthwork remains of ridge and furrow cultivation. The site was thought to have originated in the prehistoric period and was subsequently reoccupied in the medieval period. The northernmost limit of the Scheduled Area lay along the edge of a steep scarp into the dry valley in which the proposed pipeline route would run. [Au(abr)]

This would potentially disturb remains associated with a prehistoric linear boundary and a possible Roman road. There was also the potential for disturbing previously unidentified archaeological remains within the same area. The presence of medieval ridge and furrow across the site made it unlikely that remains from the later medieval period onwards existed, however, medieval ploughing may have damaged underlying archaeological features.
